Advertisement It, s true about INSURance TOO. Everyone knows it pays to buy local when shopping for something like produce. But insurance? Absolutely. A nearby, homegrown insurance company will know the region, know the risks, and know the right coverage. Especially one who s been here for 190 years. And when you deal with local companies things tend to be more personal, more genuine, less artificial. At N&D we ve been covering local homeowners, drivers, and businesses with personalized policies since 185. Today, this means on-the-spot automated claims vans, generous multiple policy discounts, and more feature-rich policies. SINCE 185 And we do all this through a network of talented, dedicated neighborhood agents. Who better to explain the many advantages of dealing with a local home team? From the President Origin Stories WGBH s Nova is embarking on an epic field trip to explore the mighty forces that have shaped our land over three billion years. Are you ready for a wild ride? In Making North America (page 11), Nova crisscrosses the continent on a fact-finding adventure with paleontologist Kirk Johnson, Sant Director of the Smithsonian Institution s National Museum of Natural History, as our guide. We join Kirk as he rappels down the steep cliffs of the Grand Canyon to examine rock layers up to 1.7 billion years old; flies over active volcanoes; and heads to Alaska to uncover fossil evidence that palm trees once flourished there. And that s just in Part 1 of this threepart series. Our young continent experienced some pretty intense growing pains during its formation, says WGBH s Paula S. Apsell, senior executive producer of Nova. Kirk is the perfect guide to reveal the secrets in the land beneath our feet, adds Julia Cort, Nova s deputy executive producer, and to show you the intimate connection between geology and biology that allowed life to flourish here. This sweeping biography sets out to answer three fundamental questions: How was the continent built? How did life evolve here? And how has its spectacular landscape shaped human lives and destinies? The exploration continues online at pbs.org/nova, where a special Making North America interactive map puts you in the driver s seat on a journey to discover how the continent came to be. Also this month, WGBH s American Experience brings us The Pilgrims (page 0) from acclaimed filmmaker Ric Burns. Featuring a recreation of the Mayflower s perilous voyage across the Atlantic and the final film performance of the late actor Roger Rees, this two-hour documentary tells the story of a small group of religious radicals who planted the seeds for America s founding. The real story of the Pilgrims, Ric says, is far more gripping, poignant, harrowing and strange and far more revealing than the Thanksgiving myth we think we know. Two stories, deeply researched and compellingly told, that shed light on the forces of nature and history that brought us to where we are today made possible by your generous annual support! 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR News Team Adds Talent The deep roster of talent in WGBH s newsroom was bolstered in October with the additions of News Director Kate McCarthy Zachry and Executive Producer and Editor for WGBH Radio Aaron Schachter. McCarthy Zachry came to WGBH News from ABC News in New York, where she held a number of positions over the last eight years, most recently serving as editorial producer for This Week with George Stephanopolous. Prior to that, she worked as a producer and digital producer for Good Morning America. Kate is an exceptionally talented journalist with deep and relevant experience, says Phil Redo, WGBH Radio general manager. She brings to our newsroom a passion for storytelling and a vision for how WGBH News can continue to improve and grow as a public media leader. Schachter came to the newsroom after having spent more than 1 years with PRI s The, a WGBH co-production produced at WGBH s Brighton studios. During his tenure there, he served in a number of roles, including editor, host and Middle East correspondent. He is focusing on content development for WGBH Radio, and also helping to enhance coverage across all WGBH News platforms. The WGBH News team has worked closely with Aaron on several stories with global-local impact during his time at PRI s The, Redo says. He has been a respected collaborator and supporter of our local coverage, and he brings significant editorial experience and storytelling skill that are valuable assets for our radio coverage. Eric in the Evening Jazz Master Phil Woods A native of Springfield, MA, Phil Woods began playing the alto saxophone at the age of 1. He studied at the Juilliard School and by the late 1950s, he was touring Europe with Quincy Jones and later the Soviet Union with Benny Goodman. Sadly, he passed away earlier this fall. Host Eric Jackson will pay special tribute to his brilliant playing. Sun, 11/8 at 9pm New Podcast Premieres This past September WGBH News and The GroundTruth Project launched a new podcast called GroundTruth. The bi-weekly program uncovers themes that often are overlooked in international news coverage, and it is one of the only podcasts using episodic storytelling to provide meaningful context to world news. It combines the resources of WGBH s multi-platform newsroom with The GroundTruth Project s network of correspondents around the world. Hosted by Charles Sennott, founder and executive director of The GroundTruth Project, each GroundTruth episode features a correspondent taking the listener on an audio journey. Season One follows the conflict in Afghanistan America s longest war and the impact on the country and its people. The world is more interdependent than ever before, Sennott says. From climate change to immigration to the stock market, what happens in one place affects every place. We want to help audiences understand the human stories behind the challenges we all face. 99.5 WCRB WCRB: Your Holiday Companion By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager We re going to focus a lot this month on the uniquely American some might even say New England holiday of Thanksgiving. It s a time to reflect, enjoy (too much) food, and be with family and friends. And from our perspective, all these wonderful things pair up just perfectly with music. That s why we have carefully selected every piece of music for Thanksgiving with an eye or perhaps an ear toward having the music we play fit in with your holiday. You can tune us in first thing in the morning and leave us on all day, confident that the music won t intrude, but instead make your holiday that much better. We ll even have personalized introductions to the music from every member of the WCRB family. So, make WCRB the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving. Then, beginning on Friday morning, just as thousands of shoppers clog the highways and malls, WCRB will begin its annual 99.5 Thanksgiving Weekend Countdown of Classical Favorites. You will get to hear all the music you love during our wall-to-wall weekend of classic favorites. And this year, since Thanksgiving is on the late side, we ll even begin mixing in some early Christmas music just to get you in the right mood. Zachary Wilder, Melinda Sullivan, and Jason McStoots from Boston Early Music Festival s 009 production of Acis and Galatea. As the leaves blaze with color across New England and the days grow shorter, Bach s cantatas one of which anchors each episode of The Bach Hour range from the solidity and affirmation of the Cantata No. 80 (based on A Mighty Fortress Is Our God ), to a meditation on the fleeting nature of life in the Cantata No. 6. Finally, on Thanksgiving Sunday, the next season of Bach s music launches, with six Sundays featuring Bach s monumentally glorious Christmas Oratorio. Along the way, you ll hear beautifully performed instrumental masterpieces, such as the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 with the Academy of Ancient Music Berlin and a series of piano transcriptions by British composers, including Vaughan Williams, Walton, and Ireland. It s a perfect start to your Sunday. On Sunday night, join weekday afternoon host Chris Voss for WCRB s Sunday Night at the Opera (8pm). In November, Chris will bring you recordings of Verdi s Il Trovatore, the rarely heard Schubert masterpiece Alfonso und Estrella; Saint-Saëns epic Samson and Delilah; and a very special radio debut of Boston Early Music Festival s brand new recording of Handel s gorgeous Acis and Galatea. For opera and vocal music fans, or for those of you wanting to explore the wondrous world of vocal music, Sunday nights on WCRB should not be missed. WCRB also is the weekly radio home for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Saturday at 8pm, with an encore Mondays at 8pm), so don t miss this unique chance to let our microphones and host Ron Della Chiesa bring you right into Symphony Hall. And, don t forget, WCRB is the radio station in Boston that plays more music than any other, and every one of the pieces we play is chosen and scheduled to accompany your busy life. Have a great month, and ease your way into the holiday season with the music and people of WCRB. On behalf of everyone here those you know on air and those behind the scenes have a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving! WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Giving Thanks By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial Each November, we re reminded of the importance of giving thanks. And here at WCAI, we re quick to acknowledge the contributions of the many volunteers who are as passionate about public radio as we are. Our volunteers include WCAI Ambassadors, loyal listeners who have signed up to spread the word about the station and the services we provide to their community on the Cape, Coast and Islands. These ambassadors our advocates on the front line share our passion for storytelling and discovery, and represent WCAI at public events, over the phone, and at private functions. We began the ambassador program two years ago as a way to further engage both our volunteers and our community of listeners. Listener Connie Champlin (seen with her grandson Abriel) seized the opportunity. WCAI gives so much to our region: information, inspiration, and entertainment, Connie says. I volunteer at WCAI to give back to the station and to ensure its continued presence on the Cape. Getting to know the talented WCAI staff and other volunteers has been a wonderful bonus. Carolyn Hyman, WCAI s special projects assistant, oversees the volunteers and says Connie is a dynamo, who genuinely embodies every quality that WCAI looks for in an ambassador. Connie took hundreds of people on tours through our studios during WCAI s Open House last year. She also has volunteered for countless events all across the Cape, including Paula Poundstone at the Melody Tent and the WCAI Anniversary Birthday Bash, Carolyn says. She is fearless, intelligent and a true ambassador and advocate for WCAI. I hope that I have half of her energy some day. Thanks, Connie! And thanks to all our volunteers. We couldn t do it without you. For more information about volunteering or becoming a WCAI Ambassador, please contact WCAI Managing Director of Development Sarah Tribuzio at sarah_tribuzio@capeandislands.org.
