1 CITY OF WESTON S SPECIAL EVENTS JANUARY - APRIL 2016 GENERAL INFORMATION The City of Weston offers wonderful events, concerts, art and cultural celebrations and more! Most of our events are free for the community, yet some are ticketed events. For details on Weston s events, visit Westonfl.org/events or call the Community Center at WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series presents Weston Rocks Classic Rock Party Rock in the New Year! Enjoy an evening of classic rock and legendary sounds by South Florida s premier classic rock band, Mr. Nice Guy. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket for seating. Food trucks will be onsite. Saturday, January 9th, 7:00 10:00 pm Event stage at Weston Regional Park JANUARY 2016 EVENTS Presented by The Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston Even the Rain (Spain) A Spanish film crew travels to Bolivia to produce a film about Columbus and his early interactions with Latin American natives. During the filming, a conflict erupts over the privatization of water. The protest interrupts film production, as the locals face a current struggle against oppression that mirrors the plot being explored in the film itself. Spanish with English Subtitles (Spain / 2010 / 104 minutes) Weston Winter Safety Expo Sponsored by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff s Office It will be snowing in Weston in January! Join us for an entertaining, fun-filled and educational evening featuring Police, Fire and Rescue vehicles, helicopters and demonstrations. Enjoy live music and other performances, interactive games and booths, including a Winter Wonderland photo area. Food will be available for purchase at the event. Friday, January 22nd, 6:00 8:30 pm Tequesta Trace Park Monday, January 11th Showtimes: 4:45 PM (doors open at 4:15 PM) & 7:30 PM (Doors open at 7:00 PM) Advance tickets available at the Weston Community Center or the Friends bookstore at the Weston Branch Library. 2 JANUARY 2016 EVENTS Minions Minions Stuart, Kevin and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world. The full-length feature film is projected onto a giant inflatable screen. Coolers are permitted. Alcohol is not allowed in the park. Symphony of the Americas Concert Opera to Broadway III The Symphony of the Americas Orchestra and Artistic Director, James Brooks- Bruzzese, bring back world-renowned singers from its original production of famous operas and Broadway selections. General Admission: $20 in advance or $30 at the door Students: $10 in advance or $15 at the door FEBRUARY 2016 EVENTS Presented by The Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston You Will be My Son (France) Impactful drama of a prestigious and domineering winemaker and his problematic and disappointing relationship with his son, which results in his deceitful turn to another successor. Full bodied and poignant family drama with a heavy surprise ending. French language with English subtitles. (French/2013/102 min.) 3 FEBRUARY 2016 EVENTS Jurassic World A new theme park is built on the original site of Jurassic Park. Everything is going well until the park s newest attraction - a genetically modified giant stealth killing machine - escapes containment and goes on a killing spree. (Action, Adventure / PG-13 / 134 minutes) Celebrate the Arts Day Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston This fourth annual event will highlight hands-on participation in the visual arts, dance, literature and more. The event is made possible by The Arts Council of Greater Weston, the City of Weston and Weston Town Center, in collaboration with Young at Art Museum. MARCH 2016 EVENTS Weston WorldFest - International Day Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston A celebration of diversity through cultural performances, music, food and more from around the world. 4 MARCH 2016 EVENTS The Peanuts Movie Snoopy embarks upon his greatest mission as he and his team take to the skies to pursue their archnemesis, while his best pal Charlie Brown begins his own epic quest back home. (Animation / G / 88 minutes) Saturday, March 12th, 7:30 PM Symphony of the Americas Outdoor Concert Presented by the City of Weston, Weston Town Center and the Weston Philharmonic Society, in partnership with The Arts Council of Greater Weston. A popular outdoor concert performance of symphony classics and Broadway tunes by the Symphony of the Americas orchestra, under the direction of Maestro James Brooks- Bruzzese. Limited seating is available. Don t forget to bring lawn chairs! Sunday, March 13th 6:30-8:00 PM Weston Town Center, Bell Tower Lane Presented by The Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston The Concert (France) Renowned conductor Andrei Simoniovich Filipov of the Bolshoi orchestra was fired for hiring Jewish musicians. Now, a mere cleaning man at the Bolshoi, he learns that the Châtelet Theater in Paris has invited the orchestra to perform. Filipov gathers his former musicians and travels to Paris to perform in their place. In French and Russian with English Subtitles. (France / 2009 / 119 minutes) Monday, March 14th Showtimes: 4:45 PM (doors open at 4:15 PM) & 7:30 PM (Doors open at 7:00 PM) See page 13 for ticket information Weston s Royal Egg Hunt This annual event features over 30,000 candy-filled eggs and a number of golden eggs for additional prizes. The eggs are gone in a flash, so arrive early. Egg hunts are for children age 10 and under. Enjoy the opportunity to take photos with the Royal Bunny and bounce houses until 12:00 pm. 5 APRIL 2016 EVENTS Student Artist Showcase Presented by The Arts Council of Greater Weston A display of works by talented young artists from schools throughout Weston. On view throughout April 2016 at the Weston Branch Library 4205 Bonaventure Boulevard Puppet Show presented by Bob Nathanson and Puppets to Go Jeremy s Jungle Adventure An original adventure and a touching story about friendship featuring a young boy and his father who embark on a jungle safari that teaches him several life lessons along the way. Shows are best suited for children in Pre-K through 2nd grade. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Saturday, April 9th Showtimes: 1:30 PM & 3:00 PM SAVE THE DATE Mayors Chess Challenge Chess players of all skill levels are welcome to participate in this event that is part of a series hosted by local Mayors in support of Scholastic Chess. Call Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Road Chip Through a series of misunderstandings, Alvin, Simon and Theodore come to believe that Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend in New York City - and dump them. They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal. Start the morning off with the family in the 5K Run/Walk and plan to attend, or participate in, the hometown parade at Weston Town Center.
