Guidelines for Regional & Unified Auditions 1) Complete the checklist found on Page 1 of this packet. 2) Schedule an audition with OU School of Musical Theatre either through: a) a regional audition event we are attending (Please follow the regional site s criteria for audition procedures and if none are specified, then follow our guidelines below.) b) a national Unified audition in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles (Call OUMT to schedule or visit our website to register directly: http://www.musicaltheatre.ou.edu/ c) a video audition (See page 6 for instructions) SONGS- Required Prepare TWO memorized musical theatre songs demonstrating legit/lyric style, and male pop/female belt. o Select one classic musical theatre song written 1930-1969, and one contemporary musical theatre song written 1970-present. (Although contemporarily written, The Drowsy Chaperone and...millie sound classic and are appropriate for the 1930-1969 era). Songs should be no longer than one (1) minute in length. Do not use a song from any production currently playing on Broadway. No a cappella singing. MONOLOGUES- Required Prepare TWO memorized monologues (one comic and one dramatic). o Select a classic theatre monologue from a play written 1930-1969, and a contemporary theatre monologue from a play written 1970-present. o Your selections should be age appropriate, in the style of realism, and not require dialect, costume or props. Neither monologue should be longer than one (1) minute in length. DANCE- Optional Upload video to YouTube and submit an unlisted link to musicaltheatre@ou.edu at least one week before your audition date. If trained in jazz, tap, or ballet, then you are highly encouraged to demonstrate your ability. Appropriate shoes and dance attire are required (no costumes). Please dance to music, not a cappella. Your performance is limited to one (1) minute for each style demonstrated. Your full body MUST be in view at all times but you may pause the video to change shoes. Any or all of the following may be included in your combination(s): Ballet (not Lyrical) - pirouettes, jeté, pas de bourrée, waltz, piqué turn, battements. Tap (not Soft Shoe) - shuffles, flaps, Buffalo, Irish, Maxi Ford, time-steps, waltz, clog, riffs, drawbacks. Guidelines for Video Audition If you are not attending a regional or national recruitment event, you may submit a video audition. You must mail in the School of Musical Theatre application materials while submitting a video. Your video will not be viewed until these forms are received. Create your video per the guidelines below, upload to YouTube, then send the unlisted link to musicaltheatre@ou.edu with the subject line: Audition Video of (Your) First/Last Name For callback consideration on-campus in the Spring of 2018, submit by Friday, December 1, 2017. Video Etiquette Please record the video in a neutral classroom, studio space or on a stage. Please introduce yourself in a close-up shot at the beginning of your audition, then pan wide to a full view of your entire body that is visible at all times. Please dress as you would for a professional audition. No editing of any kind and perform songs into monologues in a single take. There should be no mic or amplification of your voice, and no special lighting is necessary. VIDEOS THAT DO NOT MEET THIS CRITERIA WILL NOT BE VIEWED. Callback Information If auditioning at a regional and Unified event: Once a prospective student has auditioned with the Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre, they will be notified either immediately or at the conclusion of the audition day if they have received a callback to the OU campus to attend one of four on-campus callback audition days. Written notices are not emailed or mailed to those who audition. If a student is called back to our campus, they will be notified during the event. If auditioning through a Video: (Deadline December 1, 2017) Prospective students will be notified in mid-january as to whether they will receive a callback to attend one of four on-campus callback audition days. ON-CAMPUS CALLBACK DAY AUDITION Our on-campus callback auditions provide prospective students with a chance to visit the University of Oklahoma campus and the Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre. Attendees will audition in front of the entire School of Musical Theatre faculty performing in song, monologue and dance. It is a great chance for students to take a closer look at the program and allow the faculty to take a closer look at you. A sample agenda for the day is provided below. Callback Requirements All prospective students who are invited to the Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre for an on-campus callback will be required to do the following: SONGS Prepare FOUR memorized musical theatre songs demonstrating legit/lyric style, and male pop/female belt. o Select two classic musical theatre songs written 1930-1969, and two contemporary musical theatre song written 1970-present. (Although contemporarily written The Drowsy Chaperone and Millie sound classic and are appropriate for the 1930-1969 era). o Songs should be no longer than one (1) minute in length. o Do not use a song from any production currently playing on Broadway. Since an accompanist is provided, bring music in a three-ring binder and in the correct key. No a cappella singing. MONOLOGUES Prepare TWO memorized monologues (one comic and one dramatic). o Select a classic theatre monologue from a play written 1930-1969, and a contemporary theatre monologue from a play written 1970-present. o Your selections should be age appropriate, in the style of realism, and not require dialect, costume or props. The faculty may choose to hear only one piece. Monologues should be no longer than one (1) minute in length. DANCE A dance component is included in the on-campus callbacks and the following details applies: All prospective students are required to participate in a musical theatre jazz combination as a mover or dancer after an individual warm-up. (You may be asked to tap, tumble, and/or demonstrate ballet proficiency.) Trained dancers, 4+years of RECENT experience in jazz, tap, or ballet, may be asked to perform a one (1) minute dance routine or combination of their preparation. Only one dance style will be allowed. Please bring accompaniment on CD or ipod with a back-up ready if the original source does not work. Appropriate dance shoes and attire are required. Sneakers are not allowed on the dance floor. Your dance clothes should allow your body type and line to be easily viewed.
