Dear Fellow New Mexico Instrumental Instructors, Students, and Music Educators, Once again, on Saturday, February 15, 2014, the Music Guild of New Mexico will bring to the stage of Keller Hall, in the Center for Fine Arts on the UNM campus, some of the most musically-talented young men and women in our state. This program was founded in 1992, under the auspices of The New Mexico Symphony Guild. It is now sponsored by the Music Guild of New Mexico and features outstanding performances on both piano and stringed orchestral instruments. Jackie McGehee, a long-time member and pastpresident of the Guild, spearheaded the development of this event and she continues to help underwrite the program. In her honor, this event is called The Jackie McGehee Young Artists Competition for Piano and Strings. As you read through this year s application, please note: This is a concerto competition. Music must be selected from the 2014 Approved Repertoire List (attached) Applicant must be at least thirteen years of age as of the application deadline date of December 15, 2013, and no older than a senior in high school. Application deadline is December 15, 2013. We hope that you will recommend as many of your students as you feel are qualified. Jackie McGehee Young Artists Competition for Piano and Strings Saturday, February 15, 2014 University of New Mexico First Prize in each division One Thousand Dollars and Symphony Concerto Performance with the New Mexico Philharmonic Competition Guidelines Eligibility New Mexico resident Applicant must be at least thirteen years of age as of the application deadline date of December 15, 2013, and no older than a senior in high school. Former first-place winners of the JMYAC are ineligible Music One movement of a concerto selected from the attached 2014 approved updated repertoire list. It must be written originally for that instrument and be performed from memory at the competition, with piano accompaniment. $50 non-refundable entry fee, payable to JMYAC, must accompany the application. Audition CD must include a 5-minute segment of the concerto from the attached updated list and may also include other compositions, if the applicant desires. The audition CD must be clearly labeled with applicant's name and selection(s) performed. A second CD, clearly labeled with applicant's name, must include a recent color professional-quality photograph in.jpg format, printable to at least 4.5 inches. The photograph may be sent electronically to: mroboe@hotmail.com Biographical profile (150-200 words) must be comprehensive and suitable for publication. Teacher recommendation must be professional quality and comprehensive. Judging A qualified committee will evaluate applications for acceptance into the competition. Evaluations will be based on application audition CD, teacher recommendation and applicant's biography. To avoid potential conflict, all judges are from out-of-state. Judges' decisions are final. Written comments from judges will be made available to contestants and their teachers. First-place winner in each division must agree to perform the winning concerto movement with the New Mexico Philharmonic Awards First, Second, and Third-Place cash awards will be given in each division Rules Applicants understand: A letter of acceptance and performance information will be e-mailed by January 15, 2014. One memorized movement of an approved standard repertoire concerto is required. One unmarked score (no photocopy) must be provided for the judges. All cuts clearly marked and measures marked by the number every tenth measure. The highest quality performance is expected. Professional attire for competition, awards ceremony, and performance is required. Applicant is responsible for all expenses and must provide own accompanist. The first place winner of concerto performance in each division is expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals with the New Mexico Philharmonic. Entry in this competition constitutes the contestant's authorization for use of his or her name, photograph, and biographical profile in Music Guild of New Mexico and New Mexico Philharmonic publicity, publications, and websites. Accepted applicants must be available for publicity appearances and interviews. First-place winning entrants must provide their Social Security number for 1099 forms.
