Our Program: Located at Walkerville Collegiate Institute, we offer enriched credit courses in the following: Visual Arts, Media Arts, Dance, Theatre (Drama/Acting), Instrumental Music, and Vocal Music. Our program caters to students who are passionate about the arts and who have an interest in pursuing their discipline at a post-secondary level. Serious, responsible and highly-motivated students are sought for admission. Students are expected to maintain a 70% average in their chosen discipline in order to continue to the next level. Dance Classes are provided for novice to advanced dancers who demonstrate an aptitude, interest and commitment. Students will concentrate on ballet, jazz and modern dance. They will also have an opportunity to work on choreography, theory, anatomy and history of dance. Theatre (Drama/Acting) Our theatre program offers talented student actors the opportunity to develop their skills, challenge their ability, and learn the necessary techniques to pursue post-secondary Theatre and Acting training and education. Students will learn theatre history, technical theatre, method acting, classical theatre, improvisational techniques, as well as all the basics of dramatic arts. Vocal Music This program offers a high level of instruction in vocal technique and a variety of vocal styles folk songs, music theatre, wedding music, jazz, and classical. Music theory, history and sight- singing are also major parts of each course. Students perform individually and as an ensemble. Piano This program offers a high level of instruction in piano performance, technique, accompanying, and theory. A variety of musical styles including jazz, will be used to improve keyboard skills, sight reading, and harmonizing at the piano. Guitar Guitarists will study both popular and classical styles using acoustic instruments. Students will be expected to learn music theory as it pertains to the guitar. Band Band students are given an opportunity to develop their technical and expressive musical skills that prepare them to perform in a variety of musical genres and pursue music at the post-secondary level. Each student has a weekly one on one and small group lesson with an expert in their instrument and also performs as part of the large WCCA Concert Band. In upper years, students work towards also performing in chamber ensembles, the WCCA Wind Ensemble and as a soloist. Strings Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass are taught in a small group setting by expert tutors. Students will work on solo repertoire and technique for evaluation as well as preparing ensemble pieces for community performances. Music theory will also be an integral part. Media Arts The Media Arts program gives students the opportunity to creatively explore new media. The introduction year gives students skills and techniques in photography, digital imaging, video, and multi media. These foundation skills can be expanded on in higher level courses that explore the creative use of digital mediums. Visual Arts The visual arts program develops to a higher degree of excellence the concepts of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Studies focus on more complex theories and techniques as well as self-criticism and self-evaluation. The development of a portfolio is a key component.
