INSTALLATION AND OPERATION M RUBYSTAR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION MANUAL Safety Instructions : Only authorised installers should install and or replace Rubystar inverters. Ensure that all electrical installations are in accordance with local electrical requirements and codes before installation can commence. Pay specific attention to earthing. Before installation or usage of the Rubystar inverter, please read all instructions and cautionary markings in the technical documents, rubystar inverter system and the PV-array. Do NOT disconnect the PV module from the Rubystar inverter without first switching the inverter to the manual AC override position ( See controller settings ). Do NOT attempt to repair the Rubystar inverter. If it fails, contact Rubystar Customer Support to obtain a reference number and start the replacement process. Damaging or opening the Rubystar inverter will void the warranty. Rubystar inverter system introduction : Photovoltaic panels capture the sun s energy and generate electrical DC current. The DC current is inverted through the intelligent Rubystar unit to AC current which is fed to the conventional resistance element in the geyser. This results in electrical savings and the heating of water in the geyser. Rubystar inverter installation procedure : STEP 1 1. Switch off AC power supply of the geyser on the DB Board and the isolator switch. 2. Drain the geyser to fit the new element which has been supplied as part of the installation kit. In the case of a new installation make sure the element is the correct wattage. 3. Fit the new element 4. Do not secure the flange cover at this stage 5. Refill the geyser with water and check for water leaks on the flange STEP 2 1. Mount the PV panels on the roof as per the manufacturer s instructions and earth the frame. 2. Follow the attached diagram and connect points B,C and D. Do NOT connect points A and E at this stage. 3. Space and mount the inverter between the geyser and the isolator according to the available cable length. Use the available holes at the top of the inverter to affix the unit with screws. 4. Remove the thermostat from the geyser and insert the Micro Sensor in the thermostat pocket. Once inserted, insert the thermostat back into the same pocket. Please note: if the unit is supplied with a conventional temprature probe secure the probe to the geyser flange. 5. Connect the Black AC cable of the inverter, marked GEYSER to the AC element and ensure that the earth is properly secured. 6. Connect the White AC cable of the inverter, marked ISOLATOR to the Isolator switch and ensure that the earth is properly secured. 7. Mount the display inside the house in an easily accessible position for the client. 8. Secure the display cable neatly and connect the cable to the ethernet port on the inverter.
9. At the inverter crimp the positive MC4 connector to the red cable. Crimp the negative MC4 connector to the black cable. 10. Connect points A & E as per instruction at STEP 2 point number 2. 11. At the inverter, do a polarity test. The red cable must test positive and the black cable must test negative. 12. Connect the MC4 connectors to the inverter, first the black (negative) and then the red (positive) 13. Switch on the power at the DB board first and then at the isolator switch. 14. Use the manual override switch on the Display to activate the AC power to the element. 15. Use your multi-meter and measure the voltage at the geyser terminals of the element. Mains voltage (220VAC /230VAC) should be present. 16. Use the manual overide switch on the display to de-activate the AC power to the element. 17. Please note that AC power may still be present. 18. Measure the Voltage at the element with the meter set to AC voltage. An AC voltage reading between 50V and 160V should be measured during day light. 19. Fit and secure the geyser flange cover. 20. At the display, disconnect the override function and set the controller as per the instruction manual. Troubleshooting sugestions : 1. Check the connection to the load resistance. Never disconnect the DC wires while the inverter is producing power. Re-connect the DC module connectors and watch for the display to activate. 2. Make sure the Isolator is functioning properly. 3. Verify the power resistance from the element. 4. Check the DC connections between the inverter and the PV module. 5. If the problem persists, please contact Rubystar 6. Do not attempt to repair the Rubystar inverter. If troubleshooting methods fail, please follow the warranty procedures. Un-installing a Rubystar inverter: 1. Press inverter Bypass switch on the display. ( see Display diagram) 2. Disconnect DC positive at inverter. 3. Disconect DC negative at inverter. 4. Switch of geyser at DB board. 5. Switch off geyser at isolator. Note: use a multi meter to ensure that there is no AC present at the isolator or geyser. 6. Disconnect AC at isolator. 7. Disconnect AC at geyser. 8. Remove temperature probe from geyser flange ( in the case of a micro sensor, remove from thermostat pocket. 9. It is now safe to remove the inverter. Note : Make sure all components and cables are included when returning the unit. 10. Do not damage any components or cut any cables as this will void your warranty.

The status of the 230VAC power to the geyser may be On or Off and is displayed to the right side of the time displayed on the screen. Pressing and holding Select will scroll through the various parameters that can be adjusted. Press and Hold select, Scroll to RESET (10) and press UP (B) before adjusting any settings.
Setting the time of day: Press and hold Select until TIME-hrs is displayed.use UP and DOWN to enter correct hour of day. Press Select again, (this will also save the hour entry) until TIME-min is displayed Use UP and DOWN to enter correct minute of day. Adjusting the times that the geyser must be switched to 230VAC power for the morning plus evening periods: Press select and keep in to scroll until ON1-hrs (1) is displayed and use UP and DOWN to set the required ON time for the geyser. Press Select to display OFF1-hrs (2)and select the required off time for the geyser. Press select and keep in to scroll until ON2-hrs (3) is displayed and use UP and DOWN to set the required ON time for the geyser.
