2 The Library in the early days The provision of a library for members and articled clerks was one of the principle objectives when ICAEW was established in Chartered Accountants Hall, designed by John Belcher, was opened in The Library was housed in one of the most striking rooms in the building. 5 Growth of the Rare Books Collection We have been collecting early works on bookkeeping and accounting for over 100 years and hold one of the finest collections in the world.

8 Archive: Books We hold early editions of classic texts on accounting and auditing practice and works on specialist sectors such as mine and factory accounting

9 Archive: Journals We hold an archive of over 600 historic accountancy journals (UK and international) covering the late nineteenth century to the present day. Holdings include: The Accountant from 1874 Incorporated Accountants Journal from 1889 Accountants Magazine (ICAS) from 1897 Accountancy from 1938

10 Archive: In-house firm newsletters Many firms published in-house newsletters which are useful to research their history and personnel

11 Archive: ICAEW Lists of members We hold a full set of ICAEW Lists of members which can be used to trace the history and movements of individual chartered accountants and their firms

14 Online resources Our Accounting History portal offers a wide range of resources for those researching the history of the profession and individual firms, the history of ICAEW or undertaking family history research. /accountinghistory

15 Online resources: Accountancy Ancestors ICAEW Librarians have compiled from key journal sources: A searchable index of over 6,000 published obituaries and biographical profiles published between 1874 and 1965 indices of 3,500 photographs of accountants and illustrations of relevance to the profession /accountancyancestors

16 Online Resources: Accountants in Wartime First World War Index A database of individuals who served during the First World War and were mentioned in reports published in the accountancy press /ww1 Second World War A Roll of Honour of ICAEW members and clerks who lost their lives /ww2

17 Online Resources: With the colours Our website provides access to the book 'With the colours: a list of Chartered and Incorporated Accountants and their Clerks who are serving with the British Forces on land and sea, ' which reproduces lists of names previously published in The Accountant. /en/library/subjectgateways/accounting-history/ resources/with-the-colours

18 Online Resources: What s in a name In 1989 accounting historian Peter Boys prepared a series of family trees showing the development of the big accountancy firms of the day.
