1 UR Ill TEXTS IN THE JOHN RYLANDS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY OF MANCHESTER by TOHRU GOMI, MA he eighty-six texts published here for the first time belong to the T collection in the John Rylands University Library. Most of the tablets in the possession of the library were published either by C. F. Bedale or by T. Fish many years ago.' The rest have remained virtually untouched since then, with some exceptions.2 When the writer visited the library in 1979 to make a collation of the tablets published by the two above-mentioned scholars on the advice of Professor H. Waetzoldt of Heidelberg, he copied about ninety unpublished neo-sumerian tablets3 with the generous permission of Miss Glenise Matheson, the Keeper of Manuscripts, and he wishes to express his thanks to her, as well as to the editor of the Bulletin for publishing these copies. Most of the tablets come from Lagash (Nos. 1 & 2), Umma (Nos & 76) or Drehem (Nos ), judging from their contents andlor month names written on them. But it is almost impossible to ascertain the provenance of the remaining ten tablets. CATALOGUE* *L, U and D stand for Lagash, Umma and Drehem respectively. Text Date Subject 1 - L Vlll Barley 2 [ 1LV728 Garments (from?) Urbaba. 'C. F. Bedale, Sumerian Tablets from Umma in the lohn Rylands Library (Manchester, 1915) and T. Fish, Catalogue of Sumerian Tablets in the lohn Rylands Library (1932). New collations of the texts in both these books will be published in the near future by the writer. ' ~ D. r Kennedy has studied the Old Babylonian records and Dr. C. Wilcke published five Sumerian literary texts in AfO, xxiv (1973),1-5. 3~hey have been left unnumbered. In the library there are c. twenty more neo-sumerian tablets, the majority of which are, however, fragmentary. Two of them are large administrative documents from Lagash with three or four columns on each side of the tablets so far as they are preserved. One is concerned with garments and wools; it ends: t6g-ba sig-ba ugula Ga-mu li Ka5- a. The subject of the other is barley rations for workers. 87
