Session 6: Complex imprints Descriptive cataloging review What to do with multiple publishers on an item What to do with multiple places of publication on a resource Practice exercises 2 We will start this session with a review of descriptive cataloging. We ll do the review by cataloging a sample book. We ll then talk about what to do when your item has multiple publishers and multiple places of publication. We ll then do some exercises to apply the principles we just learned. You may want to skip this, and instead do copy cataloging on this record. If you do that instead, there is a record to edit in Session 8. There are several things wrong with that record, and several things that have been left out. 2

Review We will begin this session by cataloging a book from scratch We will do the descriptive cataloging and add any appropriate access points 3 They need to get out a workform and the book The joys of cataloging and classification. Has a series statement on the cover. 3

Review Please complete the cataloging workform with the following MARC fields if appropriate: 1XX XX 5XX 7XX 4 They need to fill in everything we have covered so far. Give them between 15 and 20 mins. If you had an Internet connection, you could call up a workform and fill it in, as they told you what to type. That would be better than just showing them the record. What we will do instead is go over the record before looking at the completed record. Do we need an 010? Do we need an 020? What is the title and the statement of resp? Who is main entry how is that coded? Do we need any 246s? Do we need an edition statement? Place? Pub? Date? What goes in the 300? Do we have a series? Do we need any notes? Do we need any added entries? 4

Does your record look like this? 5 Go over the record field by field. 5

Parent publisher/vs. imprint Sometimes multiple publisher names on a resource are for the parent publisher and its imprint/subsidiary If only one publisher name is give on the chief source, and other publisher names are given elsewhere, enter the publisher on the chief source in the 260 $b If more than one publisher name is on the chief source and one is the imprint name, and one is the parent body, prefer the imprint, unless the parent is listed first If no publisher names are given on the chief source, and more than one name is given on the resource, prefer the imprint over the parent, if the imprint is listed first 6 We are now going to be talking about complex imprints. This is not really an issue for academic libraries, but public libraries have to deal with the issues all the time. Read the slide, but don t give examples. The next slides will have examples. This is not really written in AACR. This information comes partly from the LCRIs, and partly from watching what LC is currently doing with their cataloging. Some of the decisions we will be looking at are very subjective, and some people might make different decisions. 6

Parent publisher/vs. imprint It is not always obvious when a name is an imprint, a parent body, or a series The OCLC authority file often gives guidance about whether a phrase should be considered a publisher, a series, a series-like phrase, etc. When you are searching for phrases e.g., a Bantam book, a Tom Doherty Associates Book, always search as a title 7 A good rule of thumb, is if in doubt what a statement is, do a title search on it in the authority file. Need to add book after Tom Doherty Associates 7

We will be looking at a variety of publisher problems In your packets you have a copy of the title page and the title page verso that corresponds with each slide. The title of the item is in the upper right hand corner We will look at dates in the next session We will look at the matching OCLC records later today, in the matching and editing session 8 Have them get out the packet of title pages that starts with A century of great western stories. Do not rush through these. It is very important for matching that they understand these concepts. 8

You should always decide what you think the place of publication, publisher, and date should be, before you start looking at possible matching records. 9 9

(Century of great western stories) T.p.: Forge A Tom Doherty Associates Book New York T.p. verso: A Forge Book Published by Tom Doherty Associates New York, NY 10 Point out the title in the upper write in parens and the description of what is on the title page. Hold up the title page as you are looking at this. Read each of the items on the screen. 10

(Century of great western stories) Search in AF for A Forge book as a title 11 First thing we need to do is figure out what to do with A Forge book. For this first example, go through the authority record a little. In fixed field series:c means this is not a series authority record. It is just giving guidance on what to do with this statement. Read the 667 that means that if Forge is not in the 260, A Forge book should be given as a quoted note. If Forge is in the 260, you can ignore A Forge book. 11

(Century of great western stories) Search in authority file for A Tom Doherty Associates Book as a title 12 We also need to search for A Tom Doherty Associates book. Again this is not a series authority record. Read the 667 that means if Tom Doherty Associates is not in the 260, give this statement as a quoted note. 12

(Century of great western stories) Because Forge is listed first on the title page, it will be the publisher Per the authority record, the phrase A Forge Book can be ignored because Forge is the publisher Per the authority record Tom Doherty will be given as a quoted note because Tom Doherty is not the publisher 13 The next slide shows what should be in the bib record without the dates. We will do the dates in the next session. What goes in the 260 $a? What goes in the 260 $b? 13

260 New York : $b Forge, (Century of great western stories) 500 A Tom Doherty Associates book. 14 Because A Tom Doherty Associates book is on the t.p., we don t have to say where that note comes from. 14

(Friend within the gates) T.p.: A Yearling Book T.p. verso: Published by Dell Publishing 1 Dag Hammarskjold Plaza New York, N.Y Again, read this info, and point it out from the photocopies. 15

(Friend within the gates) Search in AF for A Yearling Book as a title 16 First step is to search A Yearling book in the authority file. This time the wording doesn t give you an option. It says Give phrase as quoted note. 16

(Friend within the gates) In this case the place of publication and the publisher is not listed on the title page Publisher is listed as Dell Publishing Co. on the t.p. verso Place of publication is listed as New York, N.Y. Per the authority record, the phrase A Yearling Book should be given as a quoted note 17 Should be New York, N.Y. What goes in the 260 $a? What goes in the 260 $b? 17

(Friend within the gates) 260 New York, N.Y. : $b Dell Pub., 500 A Yearling book. 18 Publishing is abbreviated per AACR App B 18

(Handful of dust) T.p. Back Bay Books Little, Brown and Company Boston New York London T.p. verso Originally published in hardcover in the United States by Little, Brown and Company Reissued in paperback by Back Bay Books, Read and point out from photocopies. 19

(Handful of dust) Search in AF for Back Bay Books as a title 20 Is always a good idea to search for these phrases, even when you think it is the publisher. Read the 667 subimprint just means lower in the hierarchy Should use as the publisher 20

(Handful of dust) Because of the placement of Back Bay Books on the t.p., directions from the authority file, and the date associated with Back Bay Books on the t.p. verso, Back Bay Books will be the publisher. Little, Brown will be ignored 21 What goes in the 260 $a? What goes in the 260 $b? 21

(Handful of dust) 260 Boston : $b Back Bay Books, 22 22

(Shadow of the storm) T.p. ROC A ROC book T.p. verso: ROC Published by New American Library, a division of Penguin Putnam Inc. 375 Hudson St., New York, New York 10014, U.S.A. Penguin Books Ltd, 80 Strand, London WC2R ORL, England etc. 23 Read and point out from photocopies 23

(Shadow of the storm) Search AF for A ROC book as a title 24 Read 667 again different language from LC 24

(Shadow of the storm) The only publisher we have on the t.p. is in the form of a logo. When we look on the t.p. verso, that form of the name is listed first. Due to this, and the fact that the logo was the only publisher on the t.p., ROC is our publisher, and we can ignore all the rest of the publisher names listed on the t.p. verso. Per the authority record we can ignore A ROC book, because ROC will be the publisher

(Shadow of the storm) A place of publication is not listed on the t.p. On the t.p. verso, the place of publication is also not listed for ROC, but it is listed for the parent organization, New American Library. Per a Library of Congress rule interpretation, the place for the parent organization can be used even if it is not explicitly listed for the imprint. 26 What goes in the 260 $a? What goes in the $b? 26

260 New York, N.Y. : $b ROC, (Shadow of the storm) 27 New York is abbreviated per AACR App B 27

(The Bachman books) T.p. Logo for Signet (picture only, no words) A Signet Book T.p. verso: SIGNET Published by the Penguin Group Penguin Books USA Inc., 375 Hudson New York New York 10014, U.S.A. Penguin Books Ltd, 80 Strand, London WC2R ORL, England etc. 28 Read and point out from photocopies 28

(The Bachman books) Search in AF for A Signet book as a title 29 Read 667 do not give as a quoted note if Signet is in the

(The Bachman books) The only publisher we have on the t.p. is in the form of a logo, and this time the logo is a picture only. When we look on the t.p. verso, the logo is spelled out as Signet. Due to the fact that the logo was the only publisher on the t.p., Signet is our publisher, and we can ignore all the rest of the publisher names listed on the t.p. verso. Per the authority record we can ignore A Signet book, because Signet will be the publisher

(The Bachman books) A place of publication is not listed on the t.p. On the t.p. verso, the place of publication is also not listed for Signet, but it is listed for the parent organization, Penguin. Per a Library of Congress rule interpretation, the place for the parent organization can be used even if it is not explicitly listed for the imprint. 31 What goes in the 260 $a? In the $b? 31

(The Bachman books) 260 New York, N.Y. : $b Signet, 32 32

(Sitka) T.p. Logo for Signet (picture only, no words) A Signet Book T.p. verso: SIGNET Published by New American Library, a division of Penguin Putnam Inc., 375 Hudson St. New York New York 10014, U.S.A. Penguin Books Ltd, 80 Strand, London WC2R ORL, England etc. 33 LC never capitalizes Signet and we try to be consistent. 33

(Sitka) Search in AF for A Signet book as a title 34 Same authority record as the last time 34

(Sitka) The only publisher we have on the t.p. is in the form of a logo, and this time the logo is a picture only.

(Sitka) A place of publication is not listed on the t.p. On the t.p. verso, the place of publication is also not listed for Signet, but it is listed for the parent organization, Penguin. Per a Library of Congress rule interpretation, the place for the parent organization can be used even if it is not explicitly listed for the imprint. 36 What goes in the 260$a? $b? 36

(Sitka) 260 New York, N.Y. : $b Signet, 37 [There was a discussion about adding U.S.A. I don t think we should add it to slides] 37

(Carrie) T.p. Logo for Signet (picture only, no words) A Signet Book New American Library T.p. verso: SIGNET, SIGNET CLASSIC, MENTOR, ONYX, PLUME, MERIDIAN AND NAL Books are published by NAL Penguin Inc Broadway, New York, New York First Signet Printing 38 Read point out from photocopies 38

(Carrie) Search in AF for A Signet book as a title 39 Same authority record again 39

(Carrie) In this case, we have a logo, a note, and a publisher. Because the logo is only a picture, and not words, we will ignore it. We will use New American Library as the publisher because they are listed on the t.p. We will ignore the history information about the publisher on the t.p. verso. We will ignore information about Doubleday. This time we will have a quoted note for A Signet book, per the authority record (because Signet is not in the 260 $b) 40 40

(Carrie) A place of publication is not listed on the t.p. A place of publication is listed with the publication history. Per a Library of Congress rule interpretation, the place for the parent organization can be used even if it is not explicitly listed for the imprint. 41 What goes in the 260 $a, $b? 41

(Carrie) 260 New York, N.Y. : $b New American Library, 500 A Signet book

(Far from the madding crowd) T.p. Logo for Signet (picture only, no words) A Signet Classic T.p. verso SIGNET CLASSIC Published by New American Library, a division of Penguin Putnam, Inc. 375 Hudson St. New York, New York USA etc. 43 Read and point out on photocopies 43

(Far from the madding crowd) Search in AF for A Signet classic as a title 44 Read 667 Says to treat as the publisher 44

(Far from the madding crowd) Per the authority record, Signet Classic is the imprint. The placement on the t.p. verso would also indicate this. In this case you would have selected Signet Classic as the 260 $b even without looking at the authority file. The place of publication can come from the hierarchy listed on the t.p. verso 45 What goes in the 260 $a, $b? 45

(Far from the madding crowd) 260 New York, N.Y. : $b Signet Classic, 46 46

(Dear Mr. Henshaw) T.p. An Avon Camelot Book T.p. verso Avon Books A division of The Hearst Corporation 1350 Avenue of the Americas New York, New York First Avon Camelot printing 47 Read and point out from photocopies. 47

(Dear Mr. Henshaw) Search in AF for An Avon Camelot Book as a title 48 Look at fixed field Series: a. This is a series authority record. Look at 130 the authorized form of the series. Don t talk about the other parts of the record yet. Flip back and forth between next slide 48

(Dear Mr. Henshaw) This authority record is different than the others we have looked at. They have all been for series-like phrases. This authority record is for a series. By looking at the 645 we see that this is an untraced series. By looking at the 643 we see that the publisher is listed as Avon Books. That supports what we see on the t.p. verso. 49 Should flip back to the other slide for each bullet point. 49

(Dear Mr. Henshaw) Avon Camelot will be an untraced series in the record The publisher will be Avon Books. We will ignore Hearst Corporation, but we will take the place of publication from there. 50 How do we code an untraced series? What goes in the 260 $a, $b? 50

(Dear Mr. Henshaw) 260 New York, N.Y. : $b Avon Books, Avon Camelot book 51 51

Rules of thumb for choosing publisher Always go first by what is on the chief source of information (the title page) If the statement says A XXX Book, it is usually not the publisher, but may be a quoted note But if the statement says XXX Books, it is usually the publisher If in doubt use the Authority file. The searches you will be doing are title searches 52 52

Exercises You have 5 title pages in your packet. Together we will choose the place of publication, the publisher, and any quoted notes. 53 Depending on time, you might want them to do these on their own, but they won t have access to the authority file. Talk about the first ex. before you go to the next slide with the answer. Have them tell you their thought processes. Try to have them tell you the answers, but you might need to lead them; e.g. Is the publisher on the title page, Do we need to look anything up in the authority file, etc. 53

Ex. 1 The outsiders 260 New York, N.Y. : $b Speak, 54 54

Ex. 2 The wedding 55 First need to look at the authority record for An Anchor book Read 667 Does it need an edition statement? (Yes) 55

Ex. 2 The wedding st Anchor Books ed. 260 New York : $b Anchor Books, 56 56

Ex. 3 Death and the Dancing Footman 57 Read

Ex. 3 Death and the Dancing Footman 250 Berkley Prime Crime ed. 260 New York : $b Berkley Prime Crime, 58 58

Ex. 4 Touched by the Gods 59 Talk about authority record untraced series That means Tor Fantasy can not be the publisher 59

Ex. 4 Touched by the Gods 60 Read

Ex. 4 Touched by the Gods 61 Read

Ex. 4 Touched by the Gods 260 New York : $b Tom Doherty Associates, Tor fantasy 500 A Tor book T.p. verso 62 Because Tor Fantasy could not be the publisher, untraced series, and Tor was listed as A Tor book and not Tor Books, we have to look to the t.p. verso for the publisher. Go back and compare to A century of great western stories ( 1 st ex. from other packet) Because Forge could be used as the publisher the Tom Doherty statement on the t.p. verso could not be used as the publisher. 62

Ex. 5 The slave dancer 63 This authority record has 2 645s giving 2 different directions. I would use the 645 that says it can be traced and would do Laurel-leaf books as a 440 series. 63

Ex. 5 The slave dancer 64 64

Ex. 5 The slave dancer No authority record for Laurel-leaf Newbery 260 New York, N.Y. : $b Dell Pub., Laurel-leaf books Or Laurel-leaf books Yearling Newbery editions Yearling Newbery indicator should be the second indicator and not the first and the 830 needs ending punctuation 65
