i Chiang Mai J. Sci. 2011; 38(4) : i-ii EDITORIAL Editorial Board Changes Impact Factor 2010 Robert Molloy Since the previous July 2011 issue of the Chiang Mai Journal of Science, some important developments have taken place. First and foremost, after 15 years as the Editor, by far the longest term of any previous Editor, Assoc. Prof. Surin Khanabsakdi (pictured below) has stepped down to make way for his successor. Under Assoc. Prof. Surin s Editorship, the Journal has developed from being a relatively little known Journal of the Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University, to being what it is today - a truly international journal. On behalf of everyone associated with the Journal, both past and present, may I take this opportunity to pay tribute to the outstanding contribution which he has made to this success. Fortunately, Assoc. Prof. Surin will remain on the Advisory Board to offer the new Editor the benefit of his knowledge and experience. As from August 2011, the new Editor is Dr. Wasu Pathom-aree (pictured below) who was formerly the Associate Editor (Biology). Dr. Wasu s appointment has also coincided with a number of other significant changes. For example, the new website at is now fully operational for the online submission of manuscripts and a new full-time Editorial Assistant, Ms. Patcharin Somboon, has been appointed to monitor it on a day-to-day basis and to liaise between authors, reviewers and Associate Editors.
ii There have also been some changes to the support team of Associate Editors with Assoc. Prof. Piyapong Niamsup (Mathematics), Assoc. Prof. Supon Ananta (Physics) and Dr. Wasu Pathom-aree (Biology) being replaced by Dr. Thanasak Mouktonglang, Assoc. Prof. Yongyut Laosiritaworn and Asst. Prof. Prasit Wangpakapattanawong respectively. In welcoming the new Associate Editors, we thank the outgoing ones for their excellent work over several years during which time the demands of Associate Editorship have increased tremendously as the quality and status of the Journal have improved. These improvements were confirmed in July of this year by the award of our first Impact Factor of by Thomson Reuters ISI. This followed a 3-year indexing period which started in January By definition, what this Impact Factor of means is: Therefore, knowing that a total of 97 articles were published in the Journal in 2008 and 2009, our Impact Factor of tells us that there were 33 cites in 2010 to these articles. So this year 2011 has indeed been a landmark year for the Chiang Mai Journal of Science. However, the challenges that lie ahead are no less formidable than those of the past. Now that we are firmly established in the international arena, we must ensure that we not only stay there but also enhance our status year by year. Dr. Robert Molloy Associate Editor (International Relations)
iii Chiang Mai Journal of Science INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS EDITORIAL POLICY The Chiang Mai Journal of Science is an international English language peer-reviewed journal which is published 4 times a year in January, April, July and October by the Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University. Manuscripts in most areas of science are welcomed for publication free of charge except in areas such as agricultural, engineering and medical science which are outside the scope of the Journal. Papers which have already been published in other journals or which are under consideration by other journals should not be submitted. Similarly, papers published here should not be submitted to other journals. Special issues can also be published by prior arrangement. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPT Manuscripts may be submitted in the form of Review Articles, Research Papers or Short Communications where, as an approximate guide to length: Review Articles would not normally exceed 25 journal pages of printed text, inclusive of tables, figures and references. Reviews are normally by invitation but prospective authors are welcome to contact the Editor-in-Chief to discuss possible contributions. Research Papers would not normally exceed 15 journal pages, similarly all-inclusive. Short Communications would not normally exceed 5 journal pages. PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS Manuscripts submitted for publication will normally consist of the following sections: Title, Authors Names and Addresses, Abstract (including Keywords), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements (if any), and References. For format and general style, authors should refer to current issues (see also the Journal website) as a guide. Photographs, figures and line drawings should be of optimum quality. Colour photographs are acceptable where necessary but the extra costs involved in their reproduction must be borne by the author(s). Only references actually cited in the main text should be included in the References section and should be cited in numerical order. Manuscripts should be typed as MSWord documents (preferably MSWord 2003) using double-spacing on A4-sized pages with justified text. Any tables and figures should follow at the end of the main text and be saved in the same document file. SI units of measurement should be used throughout. It is strongly recommended that, where appropriate, the paper should be proof-read by a native English speaker, or at least someone proficient in the English language, before being submitted so as to avoid the possibility of rejection on language rather than scientific grounds.
iv FORMAT FOR REFERENCES Journals : [1] Kananthai A., On the Distribution Related to the Ultra-hyperbolic Equations, J. Comp. Appl. Math., 1997; 84: Texts : [2] Clark M.S., and Wall W.J., Chromosomes: The Complex Code, 1 st Edn., Chapman and Hall, London, Chapter in an Edited Text : [3] Pender M.P., Adoptosis in the Target Organ of an Autoimmune Disease; in Levin M., and Watters D., eds., Programmed Cell Death, Gordon and Breach, Philadelphia, 1993: Thesis / Dissertation : [4] Srichuanchuenskul W., Modern Chromatography of Metal Chelates, PhD Thesis, Chiang Mai University, Thailand, Patents : [5] Haga T., Japan Pat. No (1976). SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Manuscripts should be submitted online as a single MSWord document file via the Journal website at: Following submission, receipt of the manuscript will be acknowledged by a return containing a Manuscript Number which should be quoted in all subsequent correspondence. When submitting a paper, authors are also invited (optional) to provide the names and addresses (including addresses) of at least two referees whom the authors consider to be well qualified to review the paper. However, this is not meant to imply that the paper will be sent to these referees. This is simply a measure designed to avoid long delays in the review process in the event that other suitable referees are difficult to find. REVIEW PROCEDURE Following receipt of the manuscript, it will be first screened for its suitability for the Journal by selected members of the Editorial Board. Having passed through this initial screening process, it will then be sent to a minimum of two external referees (double-blind system). In the event of differences of opinion amongst the referees regarding the merits of the manuscript, the final decision will rest with the Editor-in-Chief. The Journal will make every effort to inform the authors of its decision within 3 months after submission and, if accepted, to publish the manuscript within a further 6 months (including the time taken to make any revisions).
v Manuscripts accepted but requiring revisions must be returned to the Journal within the timeframe specified by the handling Associate Editor highlighting the changes that have been made. Detailed responses to the referees comments should also be given in a covering letter. A revised manuscript returned after the deadline has expired without giving prior notice to the handling Associate Editor will be treated as a new submission. In the case of manuscripts considered to be unsuitable for publication, the reasons for rejection will be clearly explained. In some cases, an article submitted as a Research Paper may be recommended for acceptance as a Short Communication instead, especially where the work is of topical interest but is of limited scope and length. Following acceptance, an electronic copy of the paper typeset as it will appear in the Journal (for final proof-reading) and a Copyright Transfer Agreement will be ed to the corresponding author. The paper (indicating any final corrections) and the signed Copyright Transfer Agreement should be returned as soon as possible. Finally, following publication, an electronic copy (PDF file) of the paper can be downloaded from the Journal website and one hardcopy of the Journal issue in which it appears will be sent by air mail to the corresponding author free of charge. COVERAGE BY INDEXING SERVICES The Journal is covered by the following indexing services: Science Citation Index Expanded (also known as SciSearch ) Journal Citation Reports / Science Edition Scopus Biological Abstracts BIOSIS Previews Chemical Abstracts SciFinder Scholar Zentralblatt fu.. r Mathematik JOURNAL WEBSITE The full papers in this and past issues are available online at the Journal website at: DISCLAIMER Personal views expressed by contributors in their articles are not necessarily those of the Chiang Mai Journal of Science or of the Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University.
