See page 41 for details Backstamp Legend for Beatrix Potter Beatrix Potter was born in 1866 in England and became an author and illustrator renowned for her many best-selling children s stories about the adventures of Peter Rabbit and his friends. Born into a privileged household, Beatrix was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets including frogs, newts, ferrets and even a pet bat! She also had two rabbits Benjamin and Peter whom she took everywhere with her on a lead. Beatrix watched her animals for hours on end, sketching them. Her sketches gradually became better and better as she developed her talents from an early age. In 1901, Beatrix self-published the highly successful children s book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. In 1902, the book attracted publisher Frederick Warne & Co. and by the end of the year 28,000 copies were in print! In 1903, the character of Peter Rabbit was patented and produced into a soft toy, making Peter Rabbit the oldest licensed character. It wasn t until 1939 that the first Bunnykins figures appeared. These early models were loosely based on the characters drawn by Barbara Vernon, the creator of the Bunnykins range and have more in common with the animal figures produced by Art Director, Charles Noke in the early 1900 s. These figures did not remain in production for long because of the outbreak of World War II, making them difficult to find today.
