3 PUBLICATIONS I. General Bibliographic Note Most of those who attended the annual AAS/CEAL meeting in March and visited the book exhibition probably already have a copy of The complete list of IDC publications, a one-sheet brochure distributed at the exhibition by IDC (Inter Documentation Company), a Zug, Switzerland-based microform publisher. IDC specializes in producing microfiches of printed and archival materials in the arts, economics, history, law, religion/theology, area studies, including East Asian studies, etc. Catalogs of its publications (available free on request) are put out by its Publicity Department located in Leiden, The Netherlands (Hogewood lsi, 151, 2311 HK, Leiden, The Netherlands). IDC's latest general catalog on East Asian materials lists 280 Chinese serials and monographs, 104 Chinese local gazetteers, eighteen Japanese serials and monographs, 211 monographs and serials in Western languages, as well as missionary archives, etc. Of special interest among the titles in economics are official statistics on East Asia, including materials in the collection of the World Bank library. For example, they list China's millions, millions. originally published in London, ; Wu chia t'ung chi vlieh yueh k'an 4iyi$*JcAf ~V1f'L'l1JJ % It] #], published by the Ministry of Finance, Japan. Interesting titles in religion and theology are Council for World Mission archives on microfiche (one of the oldest archives on missionary works, representing unpublished source material pertaining to Africa, Asia and South America) and Methodist Missionary Society archives on microfiche, both archives being housed in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London; and Protestant missionary works in Chinese in Harvard-Yenching collection. Harvard University. John Yung-hsiang Lai, compiler. One can also find materials on microfiche of some special collections of historic significance, such as the Van Gulik collection of rare Chinese books in the University of Leiden, and the Von Siebold collection of rare Japanese books in the National Museum of Ethnology at Leiden, The Netherlands. The latter is an ethnological collection of Japanese artifacts, including illustrated books, manuscripts, drawings, paintings and prints, coins and some archaeological objects, brought together by Philipp Franz von Siebold, a medical officer in-the service of the Dutch East Indies army. Other titles of interest are Scandinavian union catalogue of East Asian materials. materials, and Mongolian law, etc. IDC microfiches are black/white positive prints on silver halide film. Direct orders are handled by IDC's Order Department in Zug (Poststrasse 14, 6300 Zug, Switzerland). IDC's u.s. U.S. distributor is Clearwater Publishing Company, Inc. (1995 Broadway, New York City 10023). (Lily Kecskes) 53
4 II. Qtini. CHINA PRESS AND PUBLISHING DIRECTORY. CHUNG-KUO PAO K'AN HO CH'U PAN MING LU ~ rij:fa oft] -fw1 it ~~ ~ Editor-in-chief Gao Guogan. Beijing: Modern Press; London: Longman Group, USS55.()0. As we arc all aware, publishing in China has been experiencing an enormous growth in recent years. In the five years up to 1983, the number of publishers increased by 175, while the total number of volumes of books and periodicals showed an increase of 140 and 270 percent respectively. Facing such an "information explosion," librarians and researchers in this country arc eager to gain a comprehensive overview of books and periodicals published in China, to have access to and select from these publications. This Directory, therefore, is a welcome reference tool which provides information on publishers and book distributors in China, as well as on Chinese newspapers and periodicals being distributed worldwide. The Directory is divided into three sections with 2,353 entries; Publishers, 296 entries; Booksellers, 375 entries; and Newspapers and Periodicals, 1,682 entries. Each title is followed by its entry number. At the end arc indexes to the three sections, arranged in alphabetical order of the titles in English. l.in.!in romanization is used, but a llidiid.-wade system comparison list is attached. In addition, we also find some useful statistical information, such as number of publishers and bookstores in the provinces and the three municipalities, Peking, Shanghai and Tientsin; and information on area, population, student enrollment, etc. in each province. (Lily Kecskes) CHUNG-KUO KU TAl SHIH LUN WEN TZU LIAO SO YIN, ~ 1{.Jt i~~;i~t~l ( ). Compiled by Fu-tan ta hsiieh Ii shih ~ li] hsi tzu liao shih I..!l ~ ~ /J; ~ t, ;.~~f Shanghai: Jen min ch'u pan she, v. (1140 p.) Contained in this two-volume index arc citations of some 30,000 articles published in China mainland periodicals and newspapers during the thirty-year period from 1949 to 1979 relating to the history of traditional China in all its aspects from earliest times to the mid-ch'ing period. Volume; I lists articles on what is called "general history, that is, articles not specific to any historical period. Entries arc arranged under such specialized historical categories as political, social, economic, legal, literary, or military history, or the history of religion, art, science and technology, archaeology, libraries, archives, or education. Also included arc categories for local history, ethnic minorities, and foreign relations. Volume II lists articles which, while they may deal with any of the above historical specializations, arc specific to a particular period in Chinese history. Entries arc thus arranged under historical periods, then subdivided topically, beginning with prehistoric periods and ending with the Ch'ing period. Notable among the topical subdivisions under each period arc the sections listing biographical articles. Articles dealing with more than one historical period (i.e., Mini and Ch'ing) arc included in Volume I. In both volumes, entries in each category or time period arc listed by title, with author and source, in chronological order by date of publication. There 54

T h e compilers from the History D e p a r t m e n t of F u d a n U n i v e r s i t y h a v e a p p a r ently designed this index of articles on the history of t r a d i t i o n a l C h i n a to complement t h e i r index of l i t e r a t u r e on the history of m o d e r n C h i n a (Chungkuo chin tai shih lun chu mu lu : see C E A L Bulletin No. 67), a l t h o u g h the l a t t e r work also lists book-length p u b l i c a t i o n s a n d collections of essays in a d d i t i o n to periodical a n d newspaper articles. Peking: C h u n g hua shu chii, , 111 p. A c c o r d i n g to the preface, the project of compiling this new u n i o n catalog of Chinese local histories was conceived in the course of a survey, c o n d u c t e d in 1975 by the Chinese A c a d e m y of Sciences Peking O b s e r v a t o r y, to investigate the holdings of local histories and other historical d o c u m e n t s in Chinese l i b r a r i e s for the purpose of assembling materials r e l a t i n g to a n c i e n t Chinese astronomical records a n d the history of Chinese astronomy. With the a p p r o v a l of the A c a d e m y of Sciences, the union catalog project was begun in 1976, using as its s t a r t i n g point a 1962 revision of Chu Shih-chia's C h u n g - k u o ti fang chih tsung lu (Shanghai: 1958). Copies of this catalog were d i s t r i b u t e d to libraries t h r o u g h o u t C h i n a for them to check against their holdings a n d to report a d d i t i o n a l local history titles or editions not recorded in Chu's catalog. After extensive f u r t h e r checking of an initial d r a f t with r e p o r t i n g libraries a n d consulting earlier local history catalogs issued by v a r i o u s libraries in C h i n a, T a i w a n, a n d J a p a n, the project was finally completed a n d the results published in the volume here u n d e r review. This new u n i o n catalog of Chinese local histories is u n d o u b t e d l y the most c o m p r e h e n s i v e, yet detailed survey conducted to d a t e. In comparison with the 7,413 titles listed in Chu Shih-chia's catalog of 1958, it records the titles a n d holdings of more t h a n 8,200 distinct local histories published before 1950, reported by some 190 libraries, museums, archives, a n d other collections from every p r o v i n c e, m u n i c i p a l i t y, a n d a u t o n o m o u s region in the People's R e p u b l i c of C h i n a, as well as holdings reported in the T'ai-wan kung ts'ang fang chih lien ho mu lu. issued in T ' a i w a n in Included are gazetteers of u n i t s v a r y i n g in size from provinces, prefectures, d e p a r t m e n t s, and counties, d o w n to local garrisons and t r a n s p o r t stations; not i n c l u d e d, however, are histories of i n d i v i d u a l m o u n t a i n s, rivers, scenic places, and temples. 6 within the prefecture, and smaller administrative units within the county. Each local history entry is typically listed first by title, usually preceded by the reian period in square brackets, and followed by the number of hilad.; the names of compilers and/or revisers and their dynastic period; the date of printina with both traditional Chinese and Western dates; and an indication of whether the work is a woodblock, metal, or movable-type printing, dract, manuscript, or in some cases a microfilm edition, or issued as part of a ~ w.. Below this descriptive part of the entry are listed abbreviations for the various libraries that have reported the title in their holdings; incomplete holdinas of individual libraries are noted. Different editions oc the title described in the main entry are also recorded with the libraries holding these editions. At the end of some entries are notes indicating the time period covered by the work, the current name of an older administrative unit appearing in the title of the entry, or other relevant information. The cataloa is supplemented by an index of titles, arranged by the four-corner system number of the initial cbaracter in the title, and by a separate strokecount index to the four-corner numbers. Preceding the main body of the work is a key to the abbreviations of the 190 libraries reporting their local history holdings; with some exceptions, holdings in Taiwan libraries are indicated simply by the term, -Taiwan,- with no reference to the individual holding library. Throughout the entire catalog there are no simplified characters used, only the traditional forms of characters. Used in conjunction with Wang Teh-i's recently published catalog of local histories in Taiwan, Cbung bua mid kuo T'Ii-WlD tj cb'u kudg ts'ing fldg cbib IIlll.1ll (see CEAL IlJl1WiD. No ), and the ChillOku chihftshi!dlo mokuroku, published by the National Diet Library in 1969, this new catalog should acford a near-definitive overview of Chinese local history holdings in the libraries of East Asia. 7 II. Japan JAPAN THROUGH CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY. Compiled by Yasuko Makino with the assistance of Roberta K. Gumport. Westport: Greenwood Press, An enlarged second edition. x, 144 p. ($29.95) Although its title indicates entries exclusively for children, the scope of this book is much wider than that. Makino compiled this bibliography to help young Americans acquire a more accurate image and understanding of Japanese culture. Entries are divided by subject. Full bibliographic information is given for each title, followed by a concise story outline. Inaccuracies in content, including the misuse of terminology and illustrated matter are pointed out. For example, a kimono does not look like a bathrobe, the structure of a Japanese fireplace is entirely different from a Western one, kissing was not a custom in old Japan, among other misconceptions. Books marked grade level 10 and up include some popular works for college students and the general public such as Shoeun by James Clavell and standard works such as Anthology of Japanese literature, edited by Donald Keene. The scope is very comprehensive for trade books published from the mid-sixties to date, including some of those published in the fifties and early sixties if known to be available. Together with a glossary and author and title indexes at the end, this bibliography will be a helpful tool for teachers, librarians and parents in selecting appropriate materials from the vast number of books available. (Teruko Kyuma Chin) TOSHO SHINBUN, December 12, 1985, included a note on the [Japanese] Database Fair held November 27-29, It featured Nichigai Associate's ASSIST database and their new CD.ROM (Compact disk). While our libraries have some (or all) of Nichigai's indexes and bibliographies, some are handy, some superfluous, and most outrageously expensive, maybe this note will have to be taken with a grain of salt; but it does point to the fact that they have made it possible to search their database by various key words; e.g., for information on persons, it can be searched by name, school graduated from, education, profession, etc. (Shizue Matsuda) UNDERCURRENT: THE JAPAN SCENE, PAST AND PRESENT. The second issue of this bilingual journal (Nihon no teirvu) has appeared. Contents for this, the Autumn 1985 issue, include: an article on translation by the late Charles S. Terry; an article on local autonomy by Kinbara Samon; "Hakushu's 'Family': Problems in the Kirara-shu" by Ichikawa Takeshi; and "Lay Proselytization of Christianity in Japan in the Meiji Period: The Career of E. Warren Clark," by Daniel Metraux. Standing editors include Eugene Langston, Kenneth Pyle, Thomas Rawski, Kamikawa Rikuzo, Suhara Teiichi, and Wada Seiji. 57
8 The journal seeks articles in either Enllish or Japanese on Japali-related topics in most fields in the social sciences and humanities and will undertake to translate the submission into the other lanluale so that it can be published simultaneously in both lanluales. Instructions relatinl to preparation of manuscripts, etc., appear on pales 50-5 I of the English portion of the current issue. Hong Kong: International Culture Institute, c p. This is a directory, for the general English-speaking public, of over 30,000 living Japanese of prominence in the fields of -government, commerce and industry, medicine, journalism, visual and performing arts and cultural areas such as literature and education.- Included in the field of politics and government are cabinet ministers. ambassadors, governors, mayors, and ranking civil servants, members of the National Diet and prefectural and municipal corporations. A majority of the entries seem to be on people in the fields of politics, government and business. Each entry, consisting of three to six short lines, contains brief biographical data, an address and telephone number. Although the entries are arranged in -strict alphabetical order- according to the Introduction, this is not always the case (e.g. p. 993), and there are occasional misspellinls in romanization (e.l. Ito IkgQ for IkWl, Watanabe Zenichi[ for Zen'ichim. Senjoku for Senloku). Omitted entirely from the romanizations are macrons to indicate 10Da vowels and apostrophes to indicate that a preceding -n- (orms an independent syllable. Sometimes, long vowels are indicated by applying different romanization systems, such as Wl or SUI. for o and llll for U. Biennial revisions are promised in the Introduction, in which it is hoped that the above-mentioned irregularities in romanization will be corrected in the future. (Yoshiko Yoshimura) III. K2J:a HAN'OliK YESliLSA CH'ONOSlS. Seoul, Taehan Min'guk Yesurw~n, v. The National Academy of Arts has published a new general survey of Korean arts in a four volume series. Written by experts in their respective fields, this 58

Each volume surveys its subject from early times to 1970 and guides the reader through historic developments to the present. Major developments in each area are covered, bringing in an expert's viewpoint where needed. A good general guide for serious students as well as general readers. (Yoon-whan Choe) 59
