Biographical Sketch Joanne Rocklin was born in Montreal, Quebec. She has said that the long winters kept her inside where she read voraciously. She began writing stories, poems, and diary entries at an early age. As an adult she moved to Los Angeles where her first writing was published. She married her first husband and had two sons with him. Working many years as an elementary school teacher and later as a licensed psychologist, she taught classes on writing children s books at the USC Collaborative Project and UCLA Extension. She currently resides in Oakland, California and writes full time. Joanne Rocklin has published numerous children and young adult books, many of which explore controversial topics such as child abuse and displacement. Examples of these themes can be found in For Your Eyes Only and Strudel Stories. Furthermore, Rocklin has written instructional picture books such as Musical Chairs and Dancing Bears to illustrate mathematical concepts and other educational principles. As a cat enthusiast and owner herself, Rocklin has written a number of books that prominently feature cats, including The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook and One Hungry Cat. Joanne Rocklin received the California Library Association Beatty Award, the FOCAL Award, and the California Book Award, among other awards for her work. Sources Joanne Rocklin s website: Goodreads page: Scope and Content Joanne Rocklin s papers contain materials mostly related to her published books although she included one unpublished typescript and some personal and miscellaneous items. Her papers have been divided into three series: published books, unpublished books, and miscellaneous. Many of Joanne Rocklin s typescripts were undated; however, a number of these typescripts had draft numbers. When these numbers were provided, the typescripts were organized in ascending order. The correspondence, notes, research materials, reviews, and awards that went along with a
