EAST ASIAN CHINESE STUDIES JOURNALS This section includes lists of East Asian journals that are devoted either in part or wholly to scholarship on traditional China. The list is not exhaustive, but covers relevant journals collected in the Periodical Reading Room (the Kent Cooper Room) plus a selection of journals available on the stack shelves. For the PRC, journals were universally halted during the Cultural Revolution years, especially Frequency of publication is for current issues. Titles in boldface are those that seem to me of particular importance, but this is subjective and based on incomplete familiarity with many of these journals. IU collects a wide range of humanities and social science bulletins (generally identified as the che-hsueh she-hui k o-hsueh pan 哲學社會科學版 of a hsueh-pao), including dozens from the PRC and major ones from Taiwan and Hong Kong. These are generally housed under the AS 451 and AS 452 call numbers and current issues of some of the most important are available in the Periodical Reading Room. Bulletins from major schools, such as Peking University, Nanking University, National Taiwan University, and so forth, should naturally be consulted. Frequently articles focusing on regional history will appear in bulletins of universities located in less central cities (the bulletins of Hangzhou University and Sichuan University [now renamed Lien-ta University] would be examples). Major periodicals of the Republican period in the IU Collection The Republican period was one of the most productive periods of sinological scholarship in China, despite the political chaos that permeated it. Among the reasons for the high quality of scholarship was the fact that many of the leading scholars of the period had been educated prior to the May Fourth Movement, and so were as deeply grounded in traditional texts as their predecessors of the Late Ch ing, yet were freed from constraints on thought that allegiance to traditional culture had imposed on earlier generations. Stimulated by iconoclasts such as K ang Yu-wei 康有為, Liang Ch i-ch ao 梁啓超, Lo Chen-yü 羅振玉, and Wang Kuo-wei 王國維 in the first years of the Republic, many of these scholars actively sought out new approaches to historical and literary studies through university work in the West or wide reading in Western-influenced sources. People like Hu Shih 胡適 (educated at Cornell and Columbia) and Ku Chieh-kang 顧頡剛 led sinology in a new liberal direction, yet managed to continue in close dialogue with more conservative scholars, such as Chang Ping-lin 章炳麟 and Chang Chün-mai 張君勱 (political differences notwithstanding). The most impressive work of sinology during the Republican period may have been the Ku shih pien 古史辨 series ( ), a semi-periodical production in seven volumes that was principally guided by Ku Chieh-kang, and which featured major articles by scholars such as Hu Shih, Wang Kuo-wei, Ch ien Mu 錢穆, Feng Yu-lan 馮友蘭, Lo Ken-tse 羅根澤, Lü Ssu-mien 呂思勉, Yang K uan 楊寬, and many others who represented a high-tide of scholarship comparable to that of Pelliot and Maspero is France during the same period. For these reason, the periodical publications of the Republican period, though often poorly printed and available only through microform copies, continues to be valuable sources of secondary scholarship. The list below is confined to publications of the period. Journals that continued to be important in revived form on Taiwan after 1949 are indicated with an asterisk.
