1 Manuscript Preparation Instructions Proceedings of the Symposium on Spatial Processes and Management of Fish Populations Note: This proceedings book will be peer reviewed. Three (3) hard copies of your manuscript are required at the time of the symposium for review. After the editors have reviewed the manuscript and reviews, you will be contacted about modifications. When you receive final acceptance of your manuscript, two (2) hard copies and an electronic copy on disk will be required. Mailing instructions will be provided at that time. All manuscripts should be prepared according to the following instructions. Where to Submit Manuscripts At (or before) symposium time, October 27, 1999, submit three (3) hard copies of your manuscript to: Symposium Coordinator Alaska Sea Grant University of Alaska Fairbanks PO Box Fairbanks, AK USA Phone: (907) FAX: (907) Manuscript Preparation Submissions should be on inch paper double spaced with 1 inch margins right, left, top, and bottom. The preferred word processor is Microsoft WORD. Double space all text, including references and table, photo, and figure captions. Number pages consecutively with the number centered at the bottom. Manuscripts must not exceed 20 double-spaced pages, including tables and figures. See electronic preparation for word processing details. Title Limit the title to 10 words. The title should reflect what is documented in the manuscript. It is the key to the article and should clearly and concisely reveal what appears in the paper. The title should allow the reader to judge whether the article is of interest. Words in the title should convey a maximum amount of information in as few words as possible. Organization Organize the manuscript based on the purpose of the study as stated in the introduction. Ensure that the title and headings are in harmony with the statement of purpose. The entire text should be intelligible to readers from different disciplines. All technical terms should be defined. Headings Place asterisks to the left of headings to indicate level, and use upper and lower case flush left as shown below. Do not use font size, bolding, or italics to show heading levels. *First Level Heading **Second Level Heading ***Third Level Heading

2 Abbreviations, symbols, and scientific names Define all symbols, abbreviations, and acronyms. Spell out chemical names when first used. When using a degree of measurement or geographic coordinate, use the word degree instead of a degree sign. Use Symbol font for symbols. Use true superscripting/subscripting and leave superscripts/ subscripts the same size as normal type. If you can t do superscripting and subscripting, mark regular text for editors. Double check accuracy and spelling of scientific names and common names. For fish, use as reference Common and Scientific Names of Fishes in the United States and Canada, Fifth edn., American Fisheries Society Special Publication 20. For birds follow the American Ornithologist s Union (AOU). Measurements Use metric units. Text footnotes Avoid the use of footnotes. Title page Include title, and authors full names and complete mailing address. Designate the corresponding author and include phone and fax numbers and address. Abstract The abstract should succinctly summarize the content and emphasis of the paper in about 250 words. Like the title, the abstract enables readers to determine the paper s content and decide whether they need to read the entire article. Introduction Limit the introduction largely to the scope, purpose, and rationale of the study. Results Limit the results to answers to the questions posed in the purpose of the work, and make them as succinct as possible. Discussion Limit the discussion to giving the main contributions of the study and interpreting particular findings, comparing them with those of other workers. References References should be selected judiciously and be restricted to significant, published literature. Citations of literature in the text should be carefully checked against those in the reference list and vice versa to ensure exact match. All written sources should be listed in the References section, including unpublished and processed material. Cite reference as Smith and Jones (1977) or (Smith and Jones 1977); if more than one citation, list chronologically (Smith 1936, Jones 1975, Doe 1977). For material that has been accepted for publication but the date of publishing is not yet available, use In press in place of a year. For material that has been submitted but not yet accepted for publication, use unpublished and state where it is available. All sources cited in the text should be listed alphabetically by the senior author s surname under the heading References. Journal names may be abbreviated according to Serial Sources for the BIOSIS Previews Database. The author is responsible for the accuracy of all citations. Please indicate whether sources are in a language other than English. Provide availability statement for less easily retrieved materials, e.g., available from Dept. of Economics, Simon Fraser Univ., Burnaby, BC V5A 1S6. All nonwritten sources should be cited as personal communications, with name and affiliation, e.g., (Pers. comm., Sam Smith, Univ. of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 77777, Mar. 1992). Do not list personal communications in the reference section. If you wish to format a hanging indent for references, use the proper margin settings. Do not use spaces or carriage returns to create the indent. If your word processor will not do a hanging indent using margin settings, do not indent the text; simply make a note to the typesetter.

Sci pp. Word Processing Preparation All copy must be written with word processing software; do not use TEX typesetting language. When writing the text, keep the word processing commands as simple as possible. Underline or italicize scientific names, but nothing else. Do not use bold, italics, all caps, or other styles or fonts anywhere else in the paper. These will be assigned by the copy editor in preparing the manuscript for printing. Begin each paragraph with a paragraph indent margin setting or one tab, and end each paragraph with a single hard carriage return. Do not use spaces or extra tabs to format references; use hanging indent margins or format as regular paragraphs. Use one space after periods, colons, commas, and semicolons. Leave no spaces between initials in names (A.B. Cross). Text justification is flush left, ragged right as in these instructions. Do not use any hard carriage returns in the body of any paragraphs, including (and particularly) references, except at the end of each paragraph or reference. Figures Submit figures as clean and clear black and white laser copies or sharply focused photographs with good contrast, sized to 4.5 inches (11.3 cm) width (see the last page of these instructions). Figures can be smaller if they can be easily read. Do not make the figure caption part of the figure, but be sure to leave space for the caption when sizing the figure. Do not submit figures on disk. Do not submit color figures; and be sure to set your graphics software to black and white mode (not color) when you create figures.

4 Figure number and author s name should be marked in the corner on the reverse of each figure. Figure captions should be prepared on a separate page in the manuscript. All figures should be referred to in the text, for example: Fig. 1. Orient figures to fit on the page vertically (portrait), not horizontally (landscape). Lettering on graphs should be upper and lower case, and vertical lettering should be avoided as much as possible (except for vertical, Y, axis). Text on the Y axis should read left to right when the page is turned 1/4 turn clockwise. For labels, avoid using 000 when you mean thousands or 1,000. Avoid screens in figures if possible. If your figure needs screens or other patterns, be sure they are applied to the figure after you size it to 4.5 inches (11.3 cm) width. Screens and patterns can seldom be reduced in size. Also, make sure all lines in the figures are similar density. Line weight and lettering should be sharp and even; lines that are too thin or faint will not show up in the printed book. Figures cannot be returned. Tables Tables should supplement, not duplicate, the text. Table titles should be short but descriptive. Put supplemental and explanatory information in table footnotes. Table footnotes should be numbered consecutively with letters across the page from left to right, then down. For numbers with values less than one, zeros should precede all decimal points. All units must represent significant figures. Give each column a heading with units of measure in parentheses. All tables should be referred to in the text, for instance: Table 1. Tables should be produced using Microsoft WORD table editor. Each piece of data must be in a cell of its own. Do not separate data with spaces or tabs. Put tables in a separate file from the manuscript text. If you cannot use WORD or WordPerfect tables, separate data with single tabs and include a formatted hard copy of the table for reference. Do not insert spaces instead of tabs. Follow the examples on page 5 of these instructions. Equations Use WORD Equation Editor or MathType for equations. If equation formatting software is not available, include hand-drawn equations if necessary to show position, symbols, italicized variables, etc. Make note of any mathematical representations in the text that may be confusing to the typesetter. Simplify and shorten equations as much as possible. Avoid using,, and raised dots where possible. If times signs are included, use the Symbol font. Be sure that the hard copy submitted shows the equations in their proper format. Text If your word processor is not set to English (US) language, change the file to English (US) before saving. Questions on Manuscript Preparation? If you have questions about word processing preparation, contact Sue Keller, fnsk@uaf.edu.
