1 Write a Poem or a Short Story Competition This year as part of Sedbergh s Book Town Festival we are holding a writing competition to celebrate being a book town, our history and our countryside. This competition is open to anyone aged between 6-18 years old with a creative writing flair to submit a poem or a short story. There are three different age categories; 6-9 years, years and years, and each category has a prize for 1 st place and a prize for highly commended. Prizes will be monetary book vouchers for Westwood Books. A B C D E F To enter, all you have to do is write a fictional short story (1,000 words max word count) or a poem, based on one of the photographs marked A-F on this page. Please include your name, age, contact details and the letter of your chosen photograph on your entry. You can submit your entry by to sedberghbooktown@gmail.com or alternatively, you can write or print off your entry and submit it to Westwood Books. The Deadline for this competition is the 23 rd of September. Please see further terms and conditions.

2 A few words of advice before you start your entry 1) You don t have to take your chosen photograph too literally. You can be as imaginative and creative as you want to be but the origins of your piece must be recognisable from your chosen photograph. 2) Study the photographs without over studying them. Sometimes first impressions can create the most creative stories and poems. 3) You don t have to write about everything you can see in your chosen photograph but you must write about at least one thing which can be seen in the photograph. Prizes There will be a prize for first place and a prize for highly commended in each age category. Prizes will be monetary vouchers for Westwood Books. Winning entries will be displayed during the festival. Terms & Conditions 1) This competition is open to anyone aged between 6-18 years old. 2) All entries must be original and unpublished. 3) You may only submit one entry per person. 4) You may only choose and write about one photograph. 5) If you are writing a short story please do not exceed the 1,000 word count or your story may be disqualified. The word count does not include your name, age, contact details or the title of your piece. 6) Winning entries may be published and displayed both online and as hard copies for the festival. 7) Winners will be notified before the festival. 8) Entries must be submitted by to sedberghbooktown@gmail.com or as a hardcopy to Westwood Books. Please include your name, age, contact details and the letter of your chosen photograph in your entry. We have no formatting requirements but please make sure your entry is clear and easy to read. 9) We cannot accept responsibility for entries which are not received or which are received after the closing date (23 rd of September) due to technical failure of for any other reason.
