3 The Chatter Box Jan/Feb 2017 The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom Reviewed by Marion Mango In this mystical, lyrical, soulful novel, narrated by the Voice of Music, we meet Frankie Presto, arguably the greatest guitarist to have every trod the soil of our planet---at least that is the belief of more than a few of his fellow artists. Orphaned in the Spanish Civil War, he is sent to America at the tender age of nine hidden in the bottom of a boat by the blind guitarist who was his teacher and mentor. His sole possession is an old guitar with six magical strings that turn a glowing shade of blue, then melt away whenever he affects the future lives of others. Woven through the musical tapestry of the twentieth century ---from jazz to classical to rock and roll---are the threads of Frankie s influences on careers of musicians who run the gamut from Little Richard, Django Rheinhardt, Hank Williams, and Elvis Presley for whom he played back up. Becoming a rock star himself, his gift turns into a burden. Overwhelmed by life, loss and his magical power, Frankie disappears for a number of years into a remote area of New Zealand with his wife and child, only to reemerge in a spectacular and mysterious farewell. Many of you may be familiar with Tuesdays with Morrie, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Have a Little Faith, The First Phone Call From Heaven, and The Timekeepers. Mr. Albom was for many years an award-winning journalist, as well as a screenwriter, playwright, and philanthropist. According to the author, Everyone joins a band in this life---be it through music, family or friends---and these connections change our lives. What do you think? In the Darkroom by Susan Faludi Reviewed by Bonnie Sue Pokorny The author was abandoned by her father at the age of 15 years. Twenty years later, she receives an e mail from him advising that he had just returned from Taiwan where he had under gone an a gender change operation. She flies to Hungry where he is living, to confront him about his desertion and the operation. It is a fascinating book where she not only explores her feelings, her father feelings, and the results of the operation. She goes to Hungary multiple times and she also tells of the history of the country and the many changes that occurred through the years.

5 "Beware" Prayer By Marion Mango Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray, Thee, Lord, my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake 'Tis not my fate, 'tis Marion's cake. 56 Curls By Marion Mango Her name was Shirley Temple, Her face had darling dimples, But her life was not so simple. She gave us all a smile, though our circumstances were dire, our affections she did beguile! Compliment By Marion Mango "Your hair looks striking like that my dear." "Striking? I'm not even a member of the union!" Country Cottage -By Marion Mango As I come up the road I unburden my load of things citified, I just want to hide in your gentle white warmness --- no more forlornness --- Sweet country cottage are you real or a mirage? 13 Mail-A-Book Tips Mail a Book Library materials circulate for 45 days If you need more time, we are happy to renew your items. Call Mail a Book to renew We suggest that you take out at least two items at a time. If requested, we can send them to you in two separate bags. That way you will always have something to read, while we are working on your next order. You are allowed to check out up to 50 items on your account, but only 10 DVD s at a time please. Library materials are usually chosen for you by our Mail a Book Librarian, based on preferences set up during registration (favorite authors, titles, subjects, Large Print, Regular Print, Audio, Movies). Let us know if your preferences have changed. Special Request customers choose their own library materials and are only sent items they specifically request. In order to remain an active member of Mail a Book, it is recommended that Special Request customers check out at least 2 items every 3 months. Return postage/postcard and plastic strip are included inside the re-usable mail bag. Check inside the book jacket. When reclosing the mail bag with the plastic strip, please leave a little room for us to clip open the bag. Don t pull the strip too tight. One black strip is all that s needed to secure the mail bag. Don t know what to read next, ask our Mail a Book librarian for suggestions. Do you have a reference question, don t hesitate to call. Its easy to request specific library materials. Here is how: Call us at us at mailabook@queenslibrary.org Send us a note with returned
