34 How to Deliver: Handwriting Workbook Worksheet CFU Effective Feedback 1. If page contains a formation rule, teacher and students read the rule. 2. Teacher and students read the worksheet directions. 3. Teacher models how to write/trace the first letter or word. Focus on posture, grip and letter formation (see below). Always write from top to bottom and left to right. 4. Students write/trace the first letter or word. 5. Students pair-share their handwriting. 6. Teacher selects students to check their handwriting. Individual Student Considerations Make additional copies of the worksheet for repeated practise. If after repetitive practises student still cannot form the letter(s), then a referral to a therapist might be necessary. Pencil Grip The most common grip is called a tripod grip. The tripod grip involves pinching the pencil between the pads of the thumb and index finger while the pencil rests on the side of the middle finger. Many students use a quadrupod grip which is similar except two fingers are on top of the pencil opposing the thumb and the pencil rests on the side of the ring finger. Most pencil grips do not need to be corrected. Tripod grip Writing Posture The ideal sitting posture for writing requires students to sit upright in the chair with the hips and knees at 90 and feet flat on the floor. The head should be at a reasonable distance from the paper, about 12 to 20 inches. The best writing surface is a slanted one.
