8 CHRYSALIS CONTINUED And so, while going for many job interviews he started to help out at The Ian Hamilton Organization where he received a commission, which soon became too interesting to loose time jobhunting and he suddenly was a booking agent. His lucky break came when he met Leo Lyons, the bass player for a London based blues band The Yaybirds and they asked him straight away whether he would manage them. He liked them, said yes, changed their name into Ten Years After and started to find them work. While Wright was heavily booking acts in the North of England, Terry Ellis started to become a known agent around London as well as the South and soon they found themselves competing for the Midlands venues. And when the undercutting in prices became too ridiculous they met for the first time to find ways for stopping the price war. It was only when they met for the second time, several months later during a dinner, that they decided they could get enough business to give a partnership a shot and so they started in Terry Ellis one -room appartement under the name of Ellis -Wright Agency. It was a difficult but creative period working with no space at all, with Wright sleeping on the floor in the hall way, but the agency very busy. Later they moved to an office at Regent Street, where once again, while business started to pick up considerably, space became the biggest problem. At one stage when they had a total of 6 people employed, they had to organise different working hours for some of the people as they would not all fit in the room at the same time. And Ian Anderson used to sit under Chris Wright's desk to make sure they would book some gigs for Jethro Tull. With the continuing growth of the booking agency as well as the thriving careers of Ten Years After and Jethro Tull (which originally was a soul band called the John Evan Smash and which they started to manage soon) Wright and Ellis got their first taste of the International Music Business with U.S.Tours, meetings with Bill Graham (who became a good friend) and the American record companies. While most experts expected the two to go bankrupt any day now, they planned their next big step and started their "all under one roof organization" servicing the needs of the artists like booking, management, recording, publishing plus concert promotion. Chrysalis was born. They let Ten Years After record their own first album and at the same time they started another very successful relationship when they met Chris Blackwell and made a deal for Jethro Tull with Island. Chris made a deal for their production company which did not even have a name yet which gave Island rights to everything that Wright and Ellis would put out with one special clause: They would get their own label if they had reached hits. Nobody expected that clause to ever mean something, but within 12 months they had the hits and the Chrysalis label was in operation. This close link with Island started in 1968 and stayed for many years until Island closed down its U.K. distribution. Pat Benatar Doug D'Arcy The special relation Chrysalis has with most of its artists was certainly existing with Ian Anderson, who became very close friends with Terry Ellis and in effect they were running Jethro Tull together, with Ellis spending lots of time on the road with the band. This stopped in 193 when he could not take the tour life anymore and decided he would be more useful starting to promote the album from Los Angeles. Also in 1968 they moved their offices to one of the most "creative" buildings London ever had. It was shared by Islands Chris Blackwell, Mickey Most, Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant and Chrysalis and it became a source of great creative ideas while at the same time they all learned a lot from each other. Ellis and Wright took over management for Procol Harum and later moved them for North America record -wise from A&M to their own Chrysalis label now established in the U.S as well. They dealt and became good friends with people like Jerry Moss(A&M) and Clive Davis (Columbia) and in fact it was Clive who persuaded them to put Ten Years After for the U.S. with Columbia. Then they formed Chrysalis Music, the music publishing company where their first signings included David Bowie and Frankie Miller. They also signed Robin Trower, ex Procol Harum, worldwide on Chrysalis records but the first releases were a total disaster until he started to break big much later via a German tour. Another failure was their acquisition of the London Rainbow Theater, which caused them a big financial loss. A little later they signed Steeleye Span, which act was not managed by Ellis and Wright and than Adam Faith brought them Leo Sayer. Again later in 193 they went also into the studio business with their own Wessex studios and only one year later they bought a controlling interest in George Martin's Air Studios changed their name in the Chrysalis and Air Group of Companies, now also including the famous Montserrat complex. More signings included UFO, The Babys and Rory Gallagher and in 19 Blondie, the Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman discovery. During the last few years Chrysalis has become a "Major amongst the Independents" and is concentrating not only on records anymore. The visual aspects of the artist presentation is very important and this has been one of the reasons for Chrysalis to concentrate very much on the video operation. Their promotion videos on acts like Spandau Ballet and Ultravox have earned them international rewards and this year the European breakthrough of Pat Benatar was certainly partly due to the fantastic video on Love Is A Battlefield. But it's not only videos they specialise in as there is also a strong commitment to TV and film, for example they generated the Dance Crazy, a 2 -Tone compilation film as well as a feature film based around black kids living in London and Birmingham called Babylon and Chrysalis was also one of the first record companies to release video casettes. The company plans to keep on concentrating on the video aspect and is also using satelite communication to present its artists and videos on various TV programs as they recently did with Pat Benatar to Holland and Spandau Ballet for MN. In the very near future we can expect new videos on Ultravox, Blondie and Billy Connelly as well as the new Icehouse single. Chrysalis has a continuous involvement with studios and their publishing arm is also very strong. In the USA, the label is distributed by CBS and they have recently re -located their main office to New York under Jack Graigo, while they also hold a small a&r and promotion office in L.A. While Terry Ellis and Chris Wright are flying the globe to look after the world wide interests of Chrysalis, the day to day record company, based in London is run by Doug D'Arcy with Mike Watts heading the International Department. 2 TONE In 1980 Chrysalis launched the 2 Tone label, which is headed by Gerry Dammers (also the man behind and in Special Aka). The label is based in Coventry in the North of England and has been enormously successful from the start ith SKA music. During their first months, they scored 11 top 10 single hits with acts like The Specials, Madness, The Beat and The Selector. The Specials Album sold over 1 million copies world wide. 2 Tone is continuing its success today with Free Nelson Mandela, the first hit of Special Aka. Another Chrysalis label is Go! Discs with Billy Bragg as a major artist, while they have also just announced the worldwilde signing of a licensing deal with the new TLO!abet (The Love Organisation) which is run by Paul Caplin, the man behind Marilyn and Hazy Fantasee 16 ).tt--/c(aive- 2'

9 < esaiitit C THE CHRYSALIS ACTS Basically the company has two artist rosters, one the normal Chrysalis signings and also those signed by the American Company. From the American signings Pat Benatar is of course a megastar not only in The US but in Europe too, however one that still needs to be broken big here is Huey Lewis & The News which is one of the biggest acts in the US with total sales of more than million copies. Debbie Harry is also still with Chrysalis and also signed to the American company is Billy Idol. Chrysalis generally only signs artists for a long term and particularly looks at the possibilities to build a long standing career. Most artists are multi creative and are also involved in the making of their videos. One of the single hit artists certainly is Alvin Stardust with his new hit I Feel Like Buddy Holly. New signings include Armored Saint from the US and April Showers in England. The first big Chrysalis act was Jethro Tull. Everyone knows their immense success worldwide. The band is currently working on a new album and a world tour is scheduled to start in August, including the, Europe, Australia, USA, Canada etc. icehouse is their well selling Australian Band with a new album, called Sidewalk, released this month. The group had a worldhit with Hey Little Girl. Iva Davies, Icehouse' frontman made a very strong impact as guest the last David Bowie Worldtour.( 0 SAYER C.et())<. Is also one of the oldest signings to Chrysalis. It was 10 years ago and since then he has released many successful albums and singles. Before Leo was with Chrysalis, he played in a band called Patches, which released a couple of singles on Warner Brothers. Leo's big success though started after he became a solo -artist. His first hit was The Show Must Go On. In the summer of 19 Leo Sayer had his Endless Flight album released. His last single hit was with Orchard Road, spring At the end of this year a new album can be expected. PAT BENATAR She was signed to Chrysalis America in 199. Her first album In The Heat Of The Night contained 3 hitsingles: Heartbreaker, We Live For Love and the titletrack. Her second album was released June 1980, entitled Crimes Of Passion. The singles drawn off this album, were Treat Me Right, her big success Hit Me With Your Best Shot and I'm Gonna Follow You, Summer 1981, Pat had her 3rd album released, entitled Precious Time. The singles off this album Fire & Ice and Promises In The Dark again were all successful. The th album came in the autumn of 1982, entitled Get Nervous, the singles Little Too Late and the very big smash Shadows Of The Night. One year later, autumn 1983, the live album Live From Earth was released, which contained 2 studiotracks. One of wich was the biggest hit Love Is A Battlefield. It was a nr, 1 in Holland, Belgium, New Zealand and Australia and a worldwide smash, top everywhere else. End of June there'll be a new single re -mixed and re-recorded, entitled We Live For Love. SPANDAU BALLET In 199 Spandau Ballet was signed, which became.immediately one of Chrysalis main acts. Their 1st single To Cut A Long Story Short jumped straight to nr. in the charts. Since then Spandau Ballet had 11 top 30 hits! The band originally came from Islington, discovered in the West End Club in London. They were signed against intense competition with other companies. Their first album was Journey To Glory released end November Their 2nd Album came in February 1982 titled Diamond. In March 1983, Spandau Ballet had their third and very, very successful album True released, with hitsingles on it_ With their biggest smash ever True preceded by Lifeline, Communication and Gold. Currently they are on top of the charts again with Only When You Leave taken from the this week released album Parade. Mike Watts, Mike Allen with Lars Olaf- Helen (Sonet, Sweden) presenting gold albums for 'True", to Spandau Ballet very early one morning at Micierri (Jan 198) Members of Ultravox receiving their gold albums for "Lament", together with Chrysalis' Chris Wright & Doug D'Arcy ULTRAVOX They were first signed to Island Records and released 2 albums and one compilation Ip for that label. John Foxx left the band in 199 and Midge Ure joined the group. In 1980 Ultravox was signed to Chrysalis. Their first album was released June 1980, entitled Vienna and had hitsingles taken from it: Passing Strangers, Sleepwalk, Vienna, All Stood Still. The singletrack Vienna was a massive worldwide hit for Ultravox not in the least because of a price winning Chrysalis produced video. Early 1981 came the release of their 2nd album Rage In Eden, with single hits The Thin Wall and The Voice. In 1982 came their third album Quartet with Read The Wild Wind, Visions In Blue, We Came To Dance and Hymn as hits. In the spring of 1983 Ultravox released a live mini album, a soundtrack to a video entitled Monument. From the Vienna album, the track New Europeans was used as advertising tune for a TV spot for Japanese(!) whisky and became a massive hit in Japan. But it was only after drinking the total earnings that it was decided to release it as a single. In 198, One Small Day became the first single from their latest album Lament followed by their current big international hit Dancing With Tears In My Eyes. BILLY IDOL Billy Idol When Generation X, Billy Idol's Band, split up in 1980, he went to New York to live and work there. Since then he has broken America in a big way. Generation X had 3 successful albums since they signed to Chrysalis i? 19. Billy's first album as a solo artist for Chrysalis, was entitled Billy Idol and contained his hit Hot In The City, which hit in America, Australia and New Zealand, followed by White Wedding, He released also a mini album Don't Stop, which is currently still in the Billboard HOT 200! His album.billy Idol sold copies in New Zealand which is quite amazing. August '83 saw the release of his 2nd album Rebel Yell. The first single taken from his album became a big success in America. The album is currently at nr. 16 in the charts and the second single Eyes Without A Face stands at nr.11 and is tipped this week by Holland's leading deejay Frits Spits as "Ear Catcher". HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS A San Fransisco band, they signed to Chrysalis inc. in Their first album was selftitled and released in 1980 and contained the hitsingle Some Of My Lies Are True, Their second album Picture This (1982) had three successful singles: Do You Believe In Love, Working For A Living, and Tattoo. Their current album entitled Sports, is the 3rd, so far it has had hits with Heart & Soul, I Want A New Drug arid the current smash The Heart Of Rock 'n Roll. ABOUT THE CHARTS.., THE EUROPEAN TOP 100 (SINGLES/ALBUMS): In many European counthes one chart is recognised by this music industry as the " OFFICIAL " hitparade and is therefore used for the compilation of the EUROPEAN TOP100. However there are other countries where various Charts ore in existence and often equally important. For these countries we have compiled a number of these charts into one representing the sales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives, relevant to that position, an equal Feints rating which is in turn multiplied by a factor determined through the latest known sales percentage of told singles (or album) sales which that country holds in relation to the rest of Europe. There are different percentages far singles and albums. These figures are kindly provided on a regular basis by the industry -organisations such as!fpi-bpi-gallup-deutsche Phon overhand etc.a European Chad -Committee, with experts tram a number of these industry -organisations will overlook the calculation system and will decide on improvements, changes and updates. ISSUE 13, JUNE 2TH 198 EUROPEAN ELECTIONS Although Eurotipsheet certainly is not a political paper, we feel we were quite involved with the Elections for the European Parliament last week. Many radio stations had special programs based around these elections in their respective countries and were using the European Top 100 as a guide line to play music between the commentaries. We certainly hope that the music of the best sold records in Europe, cheered up all of those people depressed with the low voting numbers. One of Europe's main radio stations, RTL in France with Program Director Monique Lemarcis had a special European Elections show on Sunday June the 1th and they were playing the European Top 100. SALUTE TO CHRYSALIS Eurotipsheet will from time to time have features on specific labels. When talking with a number of the most important European radio people we heard that they were quite interested in background on independant labels, a bit of history and certainly more on the artists represented by these companies. This week we start with one of the most successful independent companies Chrysalis. The label founded by Terry Ellis and Chris Wright has been very successful for many many years and artists currently riding high include Ultravox, Spandau Ballet and Pat Benatar. You will find part of the history as well as a spotlight on their artists in this issue. Alexandra would like to thank the Chrysalis International department for their great help in preparing our story, which could have been many pages longer if we would have the space. EUROROCK SHOW Poste Parisien, one of the main FM stations in France, is planning a special series of Euro Rock Programs and would like other active FM dliefeurope to join in. Program director ts othee informs us that he is planning e a number of special programs all based around European Hock and with at least one rock act from each territory included. NEW MUSIC SEMINAR It looks like the New Music Seminar 198, organized by the Rockpoof organization will become a major success once again. There will be many upcoming groups appearing during the evenings of the convention. On Sunday August the th, the unconfirmed lineup includes Torn Robinson, Flying Pickets, Different Toolbooks. On Monday, August 6th, The Cameleons, The Sisters Of Mercy, Billy Bragg and Dance Society will be performing. The line-up for Tuesday August th includes Aswad and General Public, as well as Black Flag, while on the last evening, Wednesday August the 8th artists will include Scritti Politti and Madonna. Trevor Horn, the successful English producer (ABC, Yes, Dollar and recently Frankie Goes To Hollywood) will deliver the keynote speech and there will be between 3,000 and,000 participants at the convention. This year there will also be a number of stands in the convention hall and Eurotipsheet hopes to meet you all in New York. ALEXANDRA'S NEWS CORNER Hello, finally summer has arrived and so has Festival Time! It kicked off well last weekend, so I travelled down to Belgium, near the French border, where the Heavy Sound Festival was held, in order to have my ears tortured (but in a very pleasant way!). Perfect weather, perfect bands among which were: METALLICA, LITA FORD, TWISTED SISTER (who will be releasing their new album Stay Hungry shortly!) and headliner MOTORHEAD. LEMMY was present with a new line up, a piece band and possibly the best he has ever had. All those groups seemed to enjoy playing in front of an enthousiastic mob of headbangers coming from everywhere. Continuing the next day "Pinkpop", our yearly event in Holland. Bands such as WANG CHUNG, MARILLION, JOHN HIATT, THE PRETENDERS, DID, BIG COUNTRY and JIMMY CLIFF. BIG COUNTRY had a very special way to work with the audience, which brought out the best in them both. BILLY BRAGG was at short notice added to the list of artist appearing and surprised everyone with a short set, maybe we'll see him longer next time. He's currently high in the charts with his mini album Life's A Riot With Spy vs Spy. More Festival news coming up soon! * A mistake slipped into our last issue on the TORHOUT & WERCHTER FESTIVAL. This double festival will not be held on June th and 8th, but on July th and 8th. Sorry Herman! * But for now, let's get down to something different: KICKS, a Manchester based band, is currently in the final stages of recording its debut album, with producers ANDY McPHERSON &JOHN ASTLEY * The most recent signing to Bronze Records is ROBIN GEORGE, hailed by Kerrangos as 'the axe of tomorrow'! ROBIN was a member of RON WOOD's BAND & THE CLIMAX BLUES BAND. He was also one of the founders of the DAVID BYRON BAND (former URIAH HEEP vocalist). Besides being guitaraxe man, he's a songwriter, singer and producer (he produced the new Wratchild album). ROBIN GEORGE starts work on his debut album, later in June, with producer JOHN RYAN (who is known from his works for STYX & SANTANA!). The album is due for release this autumn * A new MCA signing is GLENN FREY. His first album will be released shortly * NIK KERSHAW is bound to have another hit with I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. 16 Chrgsalis Started as two big rivals in the college booking business back in 1966, Chris Wright and Terry Ellis together built up one of the most successful independant record companies ever and are now heading a music empire which is far removed from those early days in the one - room booking office they founded in 196. Chrysalis has many interests on both sides of the Atlantic with main emphasis as always on the development of long lasting artist careers. It now comprises apart from Chrysalis Records, Publishing, Video, Recording Studios and Film and various other involvements, but stays a company with a very personal approach and a minimal change in top managers. This month again, Chrysalis has many International hits led by the Modern Sounds of Spandau Ballet and Ultravox. Only a few months ago they managed to bring Pat Benatar to new alltime hight with a superb record and an awards winning video on "Love Is a Battlefield". Chris Wright spends most of his time in England while Terry Ellis virtually lives in three comers of the world as he is constantly travelling between New York, London and the Virgin Islands. That's not how it worked back in the beginning. After he graduated on Mathematics and Mettallurgy Ellis wanted to become more involved in the booking of groups as he had already been doing some of that during his university years. He went into partnership with the late Mike Jeffrey, the manager of The Animals (later also Jimi Hendrix). But it did not become successful and Terry went job hunting, finally taking a job as a methods and organizations analyst. But music being his hobby he continued booking acts through his own booking agency in weekends and evenings and that only took a year to become profitable enough to make him leave his job to start booking full time. The booking business shaky as it was, it was not an instant financial smash and at times it looked like a total failure which almost made him emigrate to Australia. But one way or the other he survived booking acts such as the Alan Price Combo, later known as The Animals, George Fame, Alex Harvey, Long John Baldry and many others. Chris Wright's love was more into rock and he was booking acts at Manchester University and got his taste with artists such as The Searchers and The Paramounts (Later known as Procol Harum), while he also had a hand in a local venue The J&J club. When he left the Manchester Business School after a year study he wanted to get fully involved in the music business as he already was managing The Cockahoops, a r&b band. For his 1th album, Rod lines up is old pal Jeff Back, who's playing lead guitar o some of the tracks. Produced by Michael Omartian, Rod retumes to the basics of Rock 'n Roll with less ballads than ever. The drum sound is magnificent and the emphasis lies on rough dynamic play. Perhaps better than the single Infatuation is Heart Is On The Line with some very catchy parts: the title track is Prince -like while Bad For You is just what it says: bad, evil and mean: Rod on his best! Nona Hendryx - The Art Of Defense- RCA Ex -Labelle Nona Hendryx made a strong comeback in '83 with the single Keep It Confidential from the album Nona. On this track album she chooses for a more down to earth concept in which the percussion and synthesizers play a heavy part. Produced by the N.Y. avantgarde funk formation Material, Nona makes a strong impact with danceable funky tracks which are very suitable for discoplay. Strongest track and already tipped by some of our (Italian) correspondents is Sweat. Michael Jackson - Farewell My Summerlove Motown As expected the album and the single are already firmly planted in the European Top 100, before we even got the chance to review it. What more could we say? Michael Jackson is a phenomenon, but he's no overnight sensation. The album gives a unique opportunity to hear a now -legendary performer in the process of getting his style together.
