For these countries we have compiled a number of these charts into one representing the sales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives, relevant to that position, an equal points rating which is In turn muttiplied by a factor determined through the latest known sales percentage of total singles (or album} sales which that country holds in relation to the rest of Europe. MUSICBOX TV STARTS WEEKLY PROGRAM ON EUROPEAN TOP 100. With the launch of their own satellite channel, starting July 12th, Thorn/EMI has increased it's broadcasting time drastically and Music Box is becoming a major force in Europe. The past period already saw a strong growth in interest from cable operators to get the popular music video show. Record companies have already reported strong reactions in sales of specific repertoire in the countries where Music Box broadcasts through Sky Channel. The addition of Holland to their already existing cable networks in England, Scandinavia and Switzerland, was a major extension of their audience and it is expected that the new Thorn/EMI Music Box channel will become very popular in a short time. The idea is to finally have 24 hours music on television in Europe, concentrating on Pop and Rock and not so much on Middle of the Road music, which will be more featured on Sky Channels own music programs. Obviously, the enormous extension of programming time, is causing some headaches for the programming department, headed by Jane Kelly - Program Manager and Eddy Pumer - Program Controller. Music Box is aiming to have almost cable connections by February 1985, with the bulk of the audience coming out of Benelux. They also expect to have a strong improvement in connections in Great Britain and Switzerland. Music Box is headed by Charles Levisson, who used to run the Arista/Ariola and later WEA record companies in England. The programming of Music Box consists essentially of rock music videos produced by the artists themselves and their record companies. These videos usually run between 2,5 and 5 minutes long. Music Box is targeted to the years old audience, but is also attracting viewers as young as 8-10 and older than 25. Although their musical choice will be the current main street pop and a lot of material based around the British Top 40, they also feature European, American and Australian songs. A normal Music Box video hour includes 14 video clips, presented by a number of Veejays and also music news, competitions, station identifications, advertisements and starguests interviews. The videos are linked by graphics about 6 times an hour, that is when the VJ's are not on the screen. Mike Smith is the most well-known VJ appearing, he is also a DJ on BBC Radio One. Other VJ's include Sunie, Simon Potter, Martin Buchanan and Music Box has just announced that Joanne Cambell, a known actress, will be starting to appear as VJ from July 12th. That is also the date when they start the weekly European chart show around the European Top 100, obviously we hope that you will all be watching this show regularly. Music Box is a partnership between Thorn/EMI which owns 50% and the Virgin Record Group, which has 40 per cent plus Yorkshire Television for the remaining 10 per cent. Music Box' VJ Mike Smith ON THE AIR Information provided by Eurotipsheet is now used regularly by many different radio and tv programs in Europe. A live radio program, with telephone interviews, around Eurotipsheet on RAI, Milano, with program director Fabio Santini, brought many reactions while, in Italy the information is also regularly used by Alex Peroni, on Studio 105, the most popular station in Milano. In Germany, HR, the Frankfurt based station is using the information in the programs of Fritz Egrier, while in - Switzerland, Radio 24 (Clem Dalton), as well as RSR under leadership of Patrick Allenbach, are making special Eurotipsheet programs. In the it is Guy Hornsby who has already mentioned the information a number of times during his BBC Radio London show, while a little more up North, in Birmingham, Robin Valk (BRMB) is using the European Top 100 in his programs and so does Tony Newman on Liverpools Radio City. Last but not least, RTL PLUS, the cable tv station from Luxembourg with their programs aimed at Germany, will have a special feature around the European elections on June the 17th, when they will show videos of each European country, based on the Top in Europe, as well as the Euroclips List as printed in this magazine. Obviously we are very honoured by all these important media personalities using our information and wish you all a lot of success with the programming. ALEXANDRA'S NEWS CORNER Hi, The boys from ANY TROUBLE, returned to the, after a successful special guest tour in Germany, with CHRIS REA. Last week they ended their Headlining tour with a fantastic gig in London. From their recently released album Wrong End Of The Race, the second single is drawn, entitled Open Fire, which definitely deserves to be a big hit. But didn't all of their songs? They're due to leave end of June, for an American tour, oh by the way, rumours have it that ANDY did spend a great night in Germany with sheep and a goat! (Someone will be shot for passing this information on to me, sorryluv1). As it is a double album in the only, isn't it a shame that the music business is structured in Europe, to make it totally unprofitable for record companies and artists alike, to produce a good deal, such as a double album for the prize of one? (A quote from the one, who was just shot!) * INXS did one gig in London last week as well, everyone who hasn't already seen them should try to see them perform. Beside releasing great albums and singles these boys are magic to watch on stage!! * QUEENSRYCHE just put a finishing touch to their first album for EMI/America, entitled The Warning. This album contains ten selfpinned songs, and is due to be released end of August, their single will be out on the market first week of August. At the same time, the band will be leaving to tour in Japan. Tickets for their 7 gigs in the 'Land of the Rising Sun', sold out in days time!
