4 Social Commentary Social commentary is the act of using rhetorical strategies to provide commentary on issues in a society. This is often done with the idea of implementing or promoting change by informing the general populace about a given problem and appealing to people's sense of justice.

5 Where do we see this? Social commentary is done EVERYWHERE. Ads, articles, movies, books, short stories, poems, etc! It s where someone uses art or print to get their point across. In fiction, it s a little more subtle. Authors use characters, mood, tone, figurative language, and events to make this point. This is why we need to talk about central idea!

6 How is the central idea developed? The central idea is the point the author is trying to make. For a social commentary, this point will be about what the author wants to see change or a problem they see within society! What was the central idea of Address to Congress on Women s Suffrage?

7 How is the central idea developed? The writer develops the central idea through supporting details. These supporting details are anything that proves the central idea!! For example, when we read Address to Congress on Women s Suffrage, what were some of the details she used to support her idea that women s suffrage was inevitable?

8 How is the central idea developed? Another important thing to pay attention to when looking for central idea is mood and tone. Remember!!! Mood is how we feel while we re reading. Tone is the attitude the author takes toward the subject.

9 Background information on The Jungle The Jungle was written in It was written by Upton Sinclair who was a writer and political activist at the time. He was considered a muckraker aka someone that exposed corruption within business and government. Muckrakers were known to stir things up in a desire to make things just or fair in the world.

10 Background information on The Jungle(Part 2) Between , there were about 7,348,000 people who immigrated to the United States in hopes of new and better opportunities. Many of these families were from Germany, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe.

11 The Jungle is about Ona and Jurgis Rudkus, a couple who just got married from Lithuania. We are started in chapter 14, and up until this point, Jurgis and Ona have faced many hardships, including struggling to find work and going into deep debt trying to find a place to live. They also have a child, Antanas, who they are struggling to support through his illnesses. Where we pick up, Jurgis is working at a meatpacking factory and Ona is working at a sewing factory. They are both struggling to pay their bills and support their son.

The English Channel is the body of water that separates the countrys of england and france.
