7 MUTLIPLE HOIE PLTO It could be argued that Plato, the reek philosopher who lived in the fourth century, is the most influential thinker in Western culture. The writings of this remarkable mind cover most of the problems of philosophy which have occupied men of learning throughout the centuries until the present day. So pervasive has been Plato s thought in the Western tradition that it has been said (by.n. Whitehead) that European philosophy consists of a series of footnotes to Plato. Early disillusioned by both democrats and aristocrats in thenian politics, Plato held that there was no hope for man unless rulers became philosophers, or philosophers rulers. In 387, he founded the cademy to which he devoted the rest of his life except for one short period during which he attempted to assist his friend ion establish a Platonic state. One of the questions which preoccupied Plato was the crucial one which asked if virtue could be taught. From this he went on to develop his views on such topics as justice, education, love, government and metaphysics. Especially influential has been Plato s theory of forms. In this context the word forms means pure ideas, the perfect spiritual originals of which entities in the material world perceived by our senses are merely imperfect copies. This dichotomy between the world of the soul or mind or spirit which was held to be eternal, and the physical world which is temporary, led to the dualism which has permeated Western thought ever since. Platonic philosophy had an enormous impact on early hristian thought. Indeed many elements of hristianity and, centuries later, Islam owe much to Platonic thought and Platonism as it gradually spread to many areas of Europe and the Near East. It is not in his philosophy only that Plato s influence has been unbroken: his cademy in thens was the prototype for today s colleges and universities. It was a school devoted not only to philosophy but also to mathematics and science, enduring as an institution until 529 when it was closed by the emperor Justinian. (10 marks) PE 6
8 1. The most likely dates of Plato s life would be N. Whitehead s statement implies that Plato thought about all the main problems of Western Philosophy Plato made wide use of footnotes. Plato s philosophy is best considered a series. European philosophy is much the same as Western culture. 3. In his politics Plato held that The democrats were disillusioned.. The aristocrats were disillusioned. Rulers should also be philosophers. There was no hope for man. 4. Plato s cademy was something to which he evoted all of his life. evoted much of his life. evoted the rest of his life. Was always preoccupied. 5. The nature of virtue Was a key element in Plato s thought. Was taught in Plato s cademy. eveloped from Plato s views on various topics. Was questioned when it was taught. 6. ccording to Plato, things in the material world re really pure ideas.. Represent a dichotomy between eternal and temporary. re copies of original forms re perceived as spiritual entities. PE 7
9 7. Plato s theory of forms Resulted in a temporary dichotomy. Was thought to be perceived by our senses. Resulted in dualism in Western thought. Resulted in imperfect copies. 8. Plato s dualism was between Spiritual and physical. Soul and mind. Spirit and soul. Physical and temporary. 9. Which of the following is NOT implied in this passage? Plato has exercised a lasting influence. Plato s interests were wide-ranging. Plato also took an interest in practical politics. Plato tried to influence early hristian thought. 10. The best alternative title for this passage would be footnote to Plato. Plato s dichotomy Plato s cademy Plato in Western thought. PE 8 EN OF ENLISH EXMINTION 2010
