Yesterday & Today (3 cts) Giovanna Franci, Franco Minganti (Lingue) This 20 hour introductory course about Bologna s history, architecture, culture, and arts is esclusively aimed at FIPSE/Atlantis students. It is mandatory for them and will take place in September, before all other courses. A strong Europe-Vs.--United States comparative method will be applied at the beginning, in order to set historical, cultural parameters straight, while Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, and the new urban geographies will take center stage in the second part of the course. 45 hour course / Course starts on October 5 th and will end before December 23 rd (likely, earlier). Both critical sources (Marc Augé, Iain Chambers, Mike Davis, Richard Lehan, Frederic Jameson and others) and literary ones (Tom Wolfe, Norman Mailer, Thomas Pynchon, Philip K. Dick, Hunter S. Thompson, Amy Tan, Don DeLillo, among others) will be examined, along with movies from the novels (by filmmakers like Ridley Scott, Terry Gilliam, Wayne Chang, and others). A full bibliography will be available on the online pages of Guida dello studente ( It s a seminar course with students presentations in class. A final paper will be required, to be discussed in advance with the professor.

2 Office: Dipartimento di Lingue e LSM, via Cartoleria, 5 francizignani@alice.it 1980s New York Framed: Novelists, Filmmakers and Artists (3 cts) Franco Minganti (Facoltà di Lingue) Learning Objectives & Course Description The course aims at reconstructing the cultural climate of New York s artistic and intellectual fringes, in relation to their localization within the city, in areas with an intensified sense of community and interchange of different forms of art. Its ample thematic survey deals with a particularly exciting moment in the cultural history of NYC, and students will become aware of the primary cultural importance of the interrelation of identity, place, architecture, art. It focuses on a delicate, tough and intriguing decade (with obvious roots in the mid- to late 1970s) for the city s cultural life. Downtown NYC will take center stage in popular imagination not only American: movements and trends have already started to go global with phenomena like urban graffiti (soon to move into art galleries), hip hop & street cultures, independent filmmaking, the No Wave scene (a tangle of popular music, performance, filmmaking, videoart), avant-garde comix (RAW), and literary magazines like Between C&D. We will start from an analysis of New York s architecture and culture, with a particular attention for such areas as the Lower East Side and the Greenwich Village (with their layers of cultural history), and we will end up examining seminal and influential œvres in different fields, like Jim Jarmush s Permanent Vacation, Susan Seidelman s Smithereens, Keith Haring s graffiti, Art Spiegelman s editorial work on RAW Magazine, Jerome Charyn s War Cries Over Avenue C, Paul Auster s City of Glass, Lou Reed s New York, and many more. 30 hrs. / 3 two-hour classes a week / Course starts by mid-november (second cycle of the first semester) and will end by December 23 rd. The course aims to show how the architectural project is a conceptual elaboration before being a formal exercise. The course will offer some general theoretical elements about Urban and Architectural Composition, such as: - the genealogy of the notion of Architectural Composition, from Alberti to Blondel, from Durand to Guadet, from Auguste Perret to Le Corbusier, from Louis Kahn to Aldo Rossi; - the analysis of a specific architectural type, chosen in relation to the project theme proposed at the Architecture Studio of the IIIrd year. The monographic theme proposed is a public building (Museum, Library, etc.). The class meets twice a week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) for two hours. Semiotic theories are explained and applied. The students are supposed to have an active role participating with their own proposals to the final analysis result. Metodi, autori, esempi (Roma, Carocci, 2001, or following editions) is highly recommended, as an introduction to the Semiotics of Text theory, as it provides a general survey for beginners. The text will take place before the oral exam. It will last one hour and will be composed by 15 questions. To each question will be attributed two points. The final mark will be averaged out between written text and oral exam. The course intends to enable the analysis of the ways in which communities are transformed, lacerated, disrupt, or unified, through traumatic events; to enable the analysis of the construction of race', gender, diversity, in diverse forms of text (theoretical, literary, visual); to approach the study of traumatic events as a critical field within an intercultural perspective; to analyse politics of representation and interpretation in the inheritance and transmission of traumatic events within a community; to gain critical tools to reflect upon diverse cultural debates, to elaborate on the interconnections between texts and contexts, the individual and the community, to favour critical thinking; to analyse politics of the body within utopian and dystopian communities in a gender perspective. 5 Notice: after talking with FIPSE s Frank Franfort at the 2009 Annual Directors Conference in Boston, also this ICCE course might have been considered as available for Atlantis students: Urban Spaces and the City: Cities, Cultures, Conflicts, Frontiers (Module 1) (3 cts) Federico Montanari (International Center for Civic Engagement) The purpose of this course is to analyse and understand different forms of discourse which make up the representations of urban phenomena. In a more specific way, we will explore general concepts and categories of modern cities and metropolitan structures in a globalized world. Drawing on the work of researchers and scholars in urban studies such as Mike Davis and Saskia Sassen, we will discuss questions dealing with conflict and war, with concrete examples linked to the actual form of cities. Secondly, we will discuss problems concerning the activity of resistance, counter-culture, and self production, as well as street cultures within the tradition of the underground cultural movements from the 1960s to the present.
