17 Chapters 4 and 5: Cause and Effect When one event makes a second event occur, it is a cause. The second event is called the effect. For example, because you did your reading, the effect is that you will be able to answer the questions! Complete the cause and effect organizer below to show how the Aleuts arrival and departure affected life on the island. CAUSE EFFECT The Aleuts arrived to Ghalas-at to hunt otter. CAUSE EFFECT Captian Orlov said the Aleuts could not take the otter pelts to the ship until bringing the tribe at Ghalas-at the rest of their promised trunks. CAUSE EFFECT The men started to fight with their spears.

18 CAUSE EFFECT The tribe at Ghalas-at elected a new chief named Kimki. CAUSE EFFECT There were not enough men in the tribe to hunt. CAUSE EFFECT The seasons felt unpeaceful in Ghalas-at. CAUSE EFFECT Kimki left to look for a peaceful land that the tribe could move to.

46 Chapters 23 and 24: Sequence After the Aleut Tribe leaves, Karana rescues an injured baby otter. Cut the boxes at the bottom of the page. Karana names the otter Mon-a-nee, which means Little Boy with Large Eyes. Mon-a-nee escapes the pool and goes back into the ocean water, where Karana later finds the otter with its pups. Karana finds a young, injured otter tangled in a kelp bed. She takes it out and places it in a pool of fresh water.
