4 Island of the Blue Dolphins Page 4 of 43 Introduction The Time and Place The novel takes place on a remote California island in the mid-1800s. The setting was inspired by San Nicolas Island, one of the Channel Islands. The Channel Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean less than one hundred miles off the coast of southern California and separated from the mainland by the San Pedro and Santa Barbara Channels.

Before beginning the story, have students examine their own attitudes and beliefs about courage, survival, and hardship. Have students write a reflection entry in their writing journal. Discuss entries. 2. Ask students to give their best definition (without a dictionary) of the following words: a. Courage b. Survival c. Hardship 3. Ask students to answer the following questions: a. How are the words related? b. What other examples of these words can you think of? c. Why do you think some people react to hardship more courageously than other people? d. Do you think facing hardship can change a person? How? 4. For homework, have students respond in their journal to the following prompt: a. Describe a time when you or someone you know were courageous or overcame a hardship. Did you or this person change? How? Lesson Two 1. Review homework assignment. 2. On the board, write Courage is. This could be facing a serious illness, performing first aid, giving a speech in front a group of people, etc. Have students copy down the info on the board to a master list (to be used later). 3. Print the word list worksheet. Intro the book and read chapter 1 out loud. Encourage students to write down page number of words they come to that are difficult or that are unknown. 4. Ask the following questions about chapter 1: a. What is the setting of the story? b. What characters are introduced in the first chapter? c. What point of view does the author use? How do you know? Who is narrating the story? d. What do we learn about Karana s character? e. How does the story begin? Lesson Three 1. Review yesterday s reading and address questions before continuing. 2. Ask students to take out their wordlist worksheet and a. Write the sentence from the story that includes each word they identified from the reading. b. Find the words meaning by discussing the word or using a dictionary c. Use each word in a sentence of their own and write their sentences on a separate sheet of paper. d. Remind students they will do this each day until all words are completed.

Depending on student comprehension and reading ability, you may be able to read more or less quickly. 2. Lesson Ten 1. After completing the text, discuss the novel. Focus on the connections between Karana s development as a character and the story s setting. Use the following questions if needed: a. How has Karana acted courageously in the story? b. How else might she have acted under the same circumstances? c. How do her acts of courage contribute to her survival on the island? d. How might the story have been different if her brother had not died? e. Do you think she would have acted as courageously as she did if her brother had grown up with her on the island? Why or why not? f. Do you think Karana would have been the same person after 18 years on the island if she had not spent those years alone? 2. Print the Story Organizer and have student complete them. 3. For homework, ask students to reflect on the story in their journals by responding to the following prompt: a. Imagine that you have been left on the island under the same circumstances as Karana. Describe how you would have survived some of the hardships and threats to survival that she faced. Lesson Eleven 1. Have students share journal entries. 2. Then have students revisit the Courage is poster from lesson 2. Have them add to it after they have read the novel, which some examples may be, surviving for 18 years on an island, etc. 3. Have students brainstorm a list of people they know or have heard of who fit this description. Students can name a student or teacher, a neighbor, a city worker, etc. 4. After starting the list, share the folder of clippings and have students read the articles to identify other possible honorees. 5. Ask volunteers to nominate several possible honorees for recognition. Then take a class vote to see who wins. You might also choose 3 rd, 2 nd, and 1 st place winners.

Make a copy of the Award Certificate, and honor the recipient with the certificate. Or, students might fundraise to purchase something for the recipient. 3. Organize a volunteer event to do a service in honor of the recipient. 4. Write a letter to the honoree inviting the person for a brief presentation. The Aleut people (also referred to as the Unangan) are the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska and Kamchatka, Russia. Presently they number between 17,000 and 18,000 people. The Aleut survived by hunting and gathering. They fished for salmon, crabs, shellfish, and cod, as well as harvesting sea mammals such as seal, walrus, and whales. Caribou, musk oxen, deer, moose, whale and other types of game were also eaten roasted or preserved for later use.

Sea elephants (or elephant seals) are very large, oceangoing earless seals which take their name from the large proboscis of the adult male (bull) which resembles an elephant s trunk. This proboscis is used to produce large roaring noises, especially during mating season. Elephant seals spend about 80% of their lives in the ocean and are able to hold their breath for about 100 minutes. They can dive to 1,550 meters (5085 feet) below the ocean s surface.
