Requisitos previos / Prerequisites Nivel avanzado de inglés (B2 o superior); los estudiantes deberán ser capaces de leer fragmentos de The Canterbury Tales de Chaucer, prosa de la época Tudor y obras de teatro en verso incluidas en el programa. La asignatura se imparte íntegramente en inglés./ Students are expected to have an upper intermediate level of English (B2 or higher) and be prepared to read (with the help of a glossary) parts of Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and the Tudor prose and verse works included in the program. G4 To know and understand the basic principles of the disciplines within what is known as English Studies: the study of the English language and the literature and culture of English-speaking countries. G5 Be able to understand, produce, analyse and interpret critically both spoken and written texts of different registers, in both English and Spanish. G6 Know how to reflect critically and arrive at conclusions based on empirical evidence and logical argumentation. G7 Be able to plan and produce oral presentations, academic essays and literary, linguistic and cultural projects 2 de 7

3 G8 Know how to find, assimilate and interpret written, spoken and electronic information, and know how to use appropriate bibliographical conventions to cite such sources. G11 Be receptive to exchanging ideas and perspectives, expressed with wellsupported and consistent opinions G12 Gradually work towards attaining learner autonomy, bearing in mind the need for a proactive approach to learning. G13 Develop a responsible approach to cooperative work environments. E4 Learn about the main theoretical and methodological approaches study of language and literature, both from a historical and a synchronic perspective. E6 Learn the instruments, metalanguage and methodology for the description and analysis of the main characteristics of the English language and of literature in English. E7 Become aware of the complex nature of language and literature and their relation with other disciplines and fields of knowledge, as well as of the ways in which social and cultural contexts have an influence on the nature of language and meaning. E8 Become aware of the formation of European intellectual networks, the transmission and reception of cultural and artistic phenomena, and the specific position of English culture E9 Know the most relevant characteristics of each literary movement, as well as the characteristics and evolution of each of the literary genres and subgenres, along with their historical and cultural context E12 To recognise and appropriately value the expressive and aesthetic resources of literary phenomena E14 To be able to carry out literary and linguistic analysis of a variety of texts in English, using the appropriate terminology and tools, and within the theoretical frameworks studied. E17 To develop the ability to read attentively and to perfom text analyses through the understanding of historical and social contexts, and to develop awareness of the historical meaning of Literature E18 To know how to connect knowledge learned about the language, literature and culture of English-speaking countries 3 de 7

4 E19 To be able to distinguish among original research, public understanding of science, dissemination of knowledge, textbook writing, book reviews and essays/assignments E20 To demonstrate an analytical/critical attitude towards Literature and the linguistic phenomena in English language, and to critically position oneself regarding the different theories and the different approaches to a same problem E22 To show curiosity for the different areas of English-speaking countries' language, literature and culture, and their relation with knowledge from various disciplines. T1 To acquire a wide range of cultural and socio-political references with the aim of developing a critical attitude towards one's environment. T2 To know the principles and the development of the scientific method and of academic procedures, and to assimilate their ethical principles in terms of sources and authorship T3 To develop the ability to appreciate and to evaluate in a critical way one's own culture and the culture and customs of countries different from one's own. T4 To be able to work collaboratively in tasks of collective negotiation and to participate constructively in a debate T5 To reflect on one's own learning process and know how to evaluate it. T6 To plan one's own work and to manage time effectively. T8 To acquire a critical attitude and an ethical commitment in the acquisition and management of knowledge. T10 To understand that literary and linguistic concepts are not exact and inflexible. By the end of the course students should be able to write an essay on texts in the programme analysing their formal features and identifying their thematic concerns in the historical and cultural contexts in which they belong Contenidos del programa / Course contents 1) Introduction: The formative processes of character individualization in 14 th and 15 th century English Literature: Deployment of allegorical figures in morality plays and dream vision poetry; the Italian and French influence on 4 de 7

5 the latter; Estates satire; progression from the social group to a single representational character; Chaucer and the carnivalization of French confessio literature.
