By Eva Yarsky Do you feel that teachers give too much homework or projects? Does your back feel that it is about to break after you carry home so many books? Noa Mintz, a seventh grader, says, I feel like the teachers give us too much homework, she admits after being questioned by one of our sources. Another seventh grader, Hila Karol, says that the teachers should give out marshmallow fluff instead of homework. However, Jackie Tokayer, also a seventh grader, says that compared to M.D.S (her old school) SAR gives very little homework. Just try to imagine that! Several sixth graders confessed that they feel like they are just getting too many projects. Sometimes, after working a whole day on a project, I am just way too tired to do anything else, remarks an anonymous sixth grader. From the debate to the voting we were all involved in some way- heard about it, talked about it, or watched the candidates speak on TV. I interviewed some people on who they wanted to win and what they thought of the results. Sophia Bruder, a sixth grader, says I thought that Mitt Romney would have won because he looks more like a president and is more strict than Obama. Leah Fenster, another sixth grader, says "I think Mitt Romney should have won because I thought that he was better for Israel. Interestingly, these two girls seemed to agree with the overall middle school opinion! (continued on page 4 ).

2 P A G E 2 Dear The Hive, Lately I ve been feeling lonely because my best friend moved away and I miss her a lot. I don t have any other close friends and I am kind of shy. I really don t know what to do and don t know how to make new friends. Please help! ~ Lonely Dear Lonely, I think that you should keep in touch with your friend who moved away, but try to make some new friends too. It s not so hard to make new friends if you just be yourself and reach out to other people. If you see someone who looks really nice, you should go up and talk to them and maybe they will see how interesting you are. You can also try to find something that you have in common with someone and work off of that. Even just saying hi to someone on your way to class can show someone that you care and are trying to be friendly. 3 V O L U M E 1 I S S U E 2 Book: Legend Author: Marie Lu Rating: 5 Stars Book Review By: Tova Sidlow P A G E 3 Summary: What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem. From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths until the day June s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets. Full of nonstop action, suspense, and romance, this novel is sure to move readers as much as it thrills. (Summary from Age recommendation: 12+ Genre: Speculative Fiction, Dystopia, Young Adult Hardcover: 305 pages Stand alone or series: Book 1 in the Legend series Why did I read this book: My older sister had read this book and said it was amazing and that I had to read it. This book is a little bit like the style of the book The Hunger Games (which I loved). I read it over one weekend and couldn t put it down. It was amazing and I definitely recommend it. Notable Part from Chapter 1: My mother thinks I m dead. Obviously I m not dead, but it s safer for her to think so. At least twice a month, I see my Wanted poster flashed on the JumboTrons scattered throughout downtown Los Angeles. It looks out of place up there. Most of the pictures on the screens are of happy things: smiling children standing under a bright blue sky, tourists posing before the Golden Gate Ruins, Republic commercials in neon colors. There s also anti-colonies propaganda. The Colonies want our land, the ads declare. They want what they don t have. Don t let them conquer your homes! Support the cause! Then there s my criminal report. It lights up the JumboTrons in all its multi colored glory: WANTED BY THE REPUBLIC File No: DAY - Wanted for Assault, Arson, Theft, Destruction of Military Property, and Hindering the War Effort 200,000 Republic Notes For Information Leading to Arrest They always have a different photo running alongside the report. Remember, DON'T TRY THESE AT HOME!!! **The next time someone asks you what you're eating, simply open your mouth and show them. The other person will believe you are extremely intelligent and therefore bend to your will. **Live every day like it's your last... and who does laundry on the last day they're alive? **When a good song comes on in the middle of a dentist appointment, sing along. Sometimes I m black, sometimes white, sometimes olive or brown or yellow or red or whatever else they can think of. In other words, the Republic has no idea what I look like. They don t seem to know much of anything about me, except that I m young and that when they run my fingerprints they don t find a match in their databases. That s why they hate me, why I m not the most dangerous criminal in the country, but the most wanted. I make them look bad. Bring the outdoors in with these cool confections, sure to make a winter lover out of everyone." OREO Directions 1. Crush 9 cookies finely; mix with cream cheese until blended. Shape into 15 balls. 2. Place remaining cookies on waxed paper-covered rimmed baking sheet. Dip balls in chocolate; place on cookies. Tap cookies on baking sheet several times to allow excess chocolate to pool onto tops of cookies. Decorate with gels to resemble snowmen. 3. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm.
