1 11B Huck Finn Unit Learning Progressions Unit Goals : 1) Students will analyze and evaluate informative texts from American history for effectiveness in clarity, persuasiveness and engagement (RI11.3, RI11.5). 2) Students will participate in discussion of the various themes and satirical elements used by Twain in the novel (RL11.1, RL11.2, RL11.6, SL11.1). 3) Students will cite relevant and sufficient implicit and explicit evidence on message themes (RL11.1, RL11.2, RI11.1, RI11.2). 4) Students will synthesize the author s underlying message to various themes and the satirical devices that portray these hidden messages in a presentation that is digitally published (RL11.1, RL11.2, RL11.6, L11.1, L11.2, ). 5) Analyze how various scenes from Twain s e novel to the movie are altered, to what purpose and affect (RL11.5, RL11.7). Essential Questions: Why use satire to deliver a message instead of being direct? Is Mark Twain racist? Is there every a point when it is too much when making a point?

3 11B Huck Finn Unit Lesson Plans Week 1 1-Monday 2-Tuesday 3-Wednesday 4-Thursday 5-Friday SWBAT: Gain background knowledge on Twain s life. SWBAT: Gain background knowledge on the life and times of Twain. SWBAT: Develop foundational knowledge of satire. (RL11.6) SWBAT: Cite evidence to determine some key ideas about Twain s beliefs. (RI11.1) SWBAT: Prepare for a formal discussion. (SL11.1) Agenda - Journal: Cpd-Cpx intro. - Turn in Tests! - Vocabulary 2 List: Students will copy down an academic vocabulary list. - Twain Mini-Bio: Students will watch a mini-bio on Mark Twain (youtube). - Books and Study Guide Out: Students will check out a Huck Finn book for the unit and get the study guide. Chapter 15 Due Monday! - Journal: Cpd-Cpx - Satire in Video: Students will take notes on satire and watch examples of each kind in video format. For each example, students will need to explain what is satirical about it. - Satire Worksheet: Students will receive a worksheet to track satirical element within the novel. For this, the teacher will take them through filling out Understatement (Notice) and Unreliable Narrator (Grumble over Food). 2 examples of each are needed, and 2 can be replaced with Irony. - Journal: Shrek Satire (Robin Hood) w/ handout. - V. Skits: Students will work with a partner to perform a vocabulary word in action. - Read: Students may read with the audio or independently. - V. sentences: Students will silently walk around and use context clues to determine the definition to vocabulary words. - Read: Students will read to cover the pages needs to by Monday. - Journal: Quiz Ch. 7 - Vocabulary 2 Quiz: Students will have a vocabulary quiz through skyward. - Review Discussion Learning Progression: Students will review the expectations for a formal discussion. - Read: Chapter 15 (pg. 82) Due Tuesday! - Read: Students may read with the audio or independently.
