1 Materials You ll Need for the Course The Grapes of Wrath Fahrenheit 451 Pencils/Pens/Highlighter Two 1 subject spiral bound notebooks (for English ONLY) one will be used for rhetorical terms and class notes one will be used for homework 3 ring binder (1 should be fine for handouts) The Grapes of Wrath Summer Assignment: Novel Study Read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and complete the following assignment. ORIGINAL WORK, COMPLETE SENTENCES. 1. Find a visual symbol important to the novel. Explain this symbol and discuss why you think the author used it in the novel. Then, discuss its overall significance to the novel. 2. Identify at least 10 phrases or descriptions that identify the setting of the novel. These may describe time, place, region, or atmosphere. Use the following format: It was a sunny day in the neighborhood. (page 45) 3. After reading The Grapes of Wrath, choose one critical analysis essay using the einetwork database. Write a 1 2 page personal response to the essay using one of the following approaches: (1) supporting the essay s argument (2) refuting/opposing the essay s argument (3) qualifying the essay s argument modifying it or adding additional points to it NOTE: See instructions for accessing database

Identify at least one of the following appeals and provide specific evidence from the novel to support your response: ethos appeals to the audience s sense of ethics/character/values pathos appeals to the feelings and emotions of the audience to change their attitudes logos appeals to the audience s reason through facts, statistics, personal testimonies and/or descriptive examples Fahrenheit 451 Read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and complete the following assignment. After reading Fahrenheit 451, choose one critical analysis essay from the einetwork database. 3 Summer Assignment: Film and Rhetoric Study Watch a film of your choosing and write a thorough response to each of the following questions. You may watch the movie with a friend or classmate, but your responses MUST be your own work in order to receive full credit. ORIGINAL WORK, COMPLETE SENTENCES. DON T FORGET TO WRITE WHAT FILM YOU WATCHED! 1. Does the film have a central message or idea it attempts to impart on its audience? If it does, what is it and how can you tell? If it doesn t, explain why. 2. Who is the target audience for the film? How is this revealed? Provide specific examples from the film to support your response. 3. Discuss the role of narration in the film. From what point of view is the story told? Is it effective? 4. Discuss which of the following rhetorical elements the film uses or requires the audience to know in order to completely connect to the film s content or central messages. Be specific and write in complete sentences. satire Biblical allusions historical allusions pop culture references literary allusions commercial/product persuasion flashbacks symbolism social/political awareness cameo appearances pathos ethos Summer Assignment: Media Analysis Locate two or more effective magazine advertisements. Tear them out and bring them to class the first day of school.
4 AP English 11: Language and Composition Summer Assignments: Guidelines & Expectations 1. All responses should be neatly typed and proofread. 12 point font, regular margins, Calibri, Times New Roman, Courier, or Ariel text fonts. Double spaced responses are preferred. 2. All assignments must be in complete sentences and written in your own words. Plagiarized work will not receive credit. 3. Any assignments turned in prior to July 30 th will receive 5 bonus points for the 1 st nine weeks. Otherwise, all assignments are due by the first day the AP English class meets in August. Late assignments can only receive 50%. No late assignments will be accepted after one week from the due date. NO EXCEPTIONS. 4. Any books borrowed for the summer reading assignment must be returned by the end of the first week of classes. Otherwise, students will be recorded as owing obligations and they may have to pay a fine should they fail to return the books. This also applies to students who drop the course.
