2015/2016 selection The magnificent Poskoks Ante Tomić pages ISBN: Bidon Nataša Skazlić january pages ISBN: Entrance for children and soldiers Ivica Ivanišević february pages ISBN: The magnificent Poskoks is a story about Tomislav, the head of the Poskok family, who unscrupulously built a tycoon empire and about his not very competent son Zdeslav who, after father s death has to deal with the collapse of the empire and everything that his father left. In this novel the author skillfully mixes elements of a thriller, social novel, comedy and a love story. Although simply written, it s soaked in uniqueness and it transmits so many important messages. Tomić is a very lucid observer and he is mocking bravely the contemporary domestic reality. The novel has dynamic plot that is dizzying and unpredictable. Undoubtedly, this is the most mature Tomić s prose that ironizes and reveals the dark side of social reality and predatory mentality, all garnished with sparkling humor and irony. The protagonist of the novel Bidon is a little girl who comes back to her homeland after death, to regain consciousness of the key moments of her childhood which was suddenly and rudely interrupted. It gives this novel a strong dose of tension and a detection character because what is that so terrible that happened, when everything goes so calm, so quiet and normal? An important characteristic of this novel is uniting of the space atmosphere, psychology of the characters and their actions. It shows Istria as it was back in Child s trust is boundless, its confidence in people is untouched by the dilemmas of adulthood and to betray that trust means to make the way for tragedy. What happens to the child victim when her close environment betray her trust, becomes violent and her own family accuses her? It is a painful and delicate topic which is difficult to overcome rationally, there is no manual for such things, but there is this novel beautiful, touching and moving created perfectly by Nataša Skazlić. Entrance for children and soldiers is a collection of 26 stories in which Ivica Ivanišević, scene by scene, pictures a comic book about Dalmatia as he remembers it from his childhood and Dalmatia as it is today. The author brings us the specific mentality and character of that area, form the perspective of the observer who is also the protagonist and commentator of the collective comedy of scenes from dark life. This book also contains a tribute to transience and always present southern humor and the poetics of nostalgia for the simplicity of childhood and an inventory of personal and collective memories, as well as an entire archive of defiance that turns into philosophy of life that is possible only in this spiritual landscape and only in these geographical coordinates. Time is irrelevant in his prose what happened yesterday still lives in the memories, and what is actual today could have been yesterday and could be tomorrow because in authors mind, as well as in readers, it is always live and actual. 4

Croatian authors The book of stories Igor Grbić april pages ISBN: Glumac... je glumac... je glumac Zijah A. Sokolović april pages ISBN: Invisible Tena Štivičić may pages ISBN: The book of stories is the book that talks about telling a story. Through twenty three imaginative stories, Igor Grbić skillfully reconstructs all the ways in which stories were told and written through history, convincingly shows the development of short story and reproduces discourses of the rich history of narration. The book starts with stories close to oral narration such as myths, legends and fairy tales, but there are also classically structured, realistic stories, and the book is closed by fantasy and stories whose fable, logic and language are dispersed. Grbić establishes a dialogue with tradition and he uses deconstruction, parody and persiflage. The book of stories is an extraordinary book also because of its motif and thematic richness and amazing creativity, lexical abundance and metaphysic dimension as a basis to everything that the author writes. He juggles the words and makes his prose close to poetry and his book is completely different than anything written and published these days. No sustiglo me još glasnije: Voooojničeeeeee! Pogledajte, najgluplji uvijek sjede u prvim redovima. Lijepo obučen, a glup. The book Invisible contains three plays. Fireflies are play about tiredness, loneliness and captivation in so-called freedom. The plot takes place the airport which, although seemingly implies unrestricted freedom of movement, becomes a place of limitation and strict control - but also smaller version of the transitional space and time, in which the protagonists are caught unprepared. They are people forced to wait for they flight, caught between real life and their own ideas about better reality that didn t happen to them but they still have the opportunity to guess about it, even lie about it in the airport waiting room. Confinement in this unplanned situation gives them a chance to stop by the usual dynamics of life and face their own emptiness and alienation. Seven Days in Zagreb is problematizing the motifs of transition, new identities of contemporary reality and different protagonists reactions to changes. In the world where is required to have tons of qualifications and to fill a lot of forms just to adopt a dog, while everyone is allowed to have a child, five protagonists are getting rebellious and they are convincingly representing their point of views. The protagonists of the play Invisible are the group of migrants and a British man, whose lives are intertwined. They were longing for better life and a perspective, but somehow they ended up forgotten, painfully invisible and trapped in mechanisms of bureaucracy and social conventions, faced with indifference and lack of empathy for foreigners. 5

2015/2016 selection Mother, taste my song Zlatko Gall june pages ISBN: The saddle is tight for two Ivica Ivanišević september pages ISBN: It could be me Marina Vujčić september pages ISBN: Zlatko Gall s book Mother, taste my song is uniting in a specific way his two most important light motives: music and gastronomy. It is a collection of gastronomic and musical essays about the songs that are talking about food by an excellent gastronomy and music knower who turns his prose into a material that is both eatable and listenable. Mother, taste my song is a sharp, skillfully written and melodic book with the great sense for reader s interest. Author s openmindness for different impressions of food, music and cookery will motivate the reader for all kinds of reader s reaction: from cookery experiments enthusiasm or listening to music mentioned in the book to the whole new point of view of this theme where two different kinds of hedonism collide. This book is a real narrative soundtrack not only for the gourmands and music lovers, but to every literary devotee who recognizes good prose and a true commitment to the topic. 6 This novel, whose story is set in Split in 1969, when the whole world was expecting first human steps on Moon, has all characteristics of an excellent prose a precise structure, exquisite narrative skill and exceptional authentic description of characters, the charm of typical ivaniševićian humor, and linguistic stratification in which the dialect, foreign languages and standard are unexpectedly intertwined, that contributes to the credibility of the story. It is a story about a seemingly ordinary family, told from the perspective of a young boy Toma. His father is preoccupied with an unexpected and complicated love story that mixed up his life routine, his mother is mesmerized watching TV all day, his older brother is busy with a love affair with a girl from Germany who came for holidays in Split and his grandfather is silent since the WW2; so Toma is all alone with his dilemmas about growing up and unanswered questions, dealing it all by himself. He finally finds his hero in one of the comic books, but even the comic book hero cannot deal with the complicated situation in Toma s family. Ivica Ivanišević wrote not just an interesting story about a boy s love for comic books, but a serious novel about friendship, family and social relations, love, growing up and learning about human flaws. This novel reveals a touching nostalgia for the time when it seemed that one small step for a man, and one giant leap for a mankind was made. From that point and that nostalgia, it seems that mankind took steps far too big since then, leaving behind the small man to long for the real values in life that survive only in novels like this one. It could be me is Marina Vujčić s richest and most personal novel. The story is about psychiatrist Laura Herman and her patient who comes to tell her story. But the psychotherapy is more than just therapy, and the characters are not really in the common roles specific for a psychiatry ordination. Beside these two main stories, there are three more, all from Laura s patients who are subtly described by author. Their lives are intertwined and they form a mosaic of stories about getting over painful experiences. Adjustment of our own lives to the others expectations, unhappiness in a relationship, wrong life choices, facing the loss of partner and difficulties of a fresh start are the main points of this novel. The spectrum of themes in this novel is expanded by psychoanalysis and the verbalization of people s experiences. Marina Vujčić is a skillful stylist of an elegant writing and she talks openly and bravely about some serious topics, creating an intimate prose that corresponds with contemporary world and its problems.

Uz blage uplive fantastike u zbilju i intrigantno miješanje humora i strave, Dario Rukavina vrlo dojmljivo beletrizira brojne uvijek aktualne teme: prve (i posljednje) ljubavi, prekinuta prijateljstva, bračne i ljubavne krize, ksenofobiju, kriminal, zločine, rat itd. Knjigu otvaraju generacijske priče o odrastanju, zaljubljivanju, vojničkim i ratnim danima; emocionalne, duhovite, dirljive.

Opisujući različita iskustva gimnazijalaca, autor autentično oslikava unutarnju borbu mladih ljudi s problemima koje nosi odrastanje, socijalizacija, izgradnja identiteta i imperativ prihvaćenosti među vršnjacima.

Novaku. Autorica s dubinskim poznavanjem ulazi u sva Marijanina stanja i raspolažući velikim darom da zamjećuje bezbrojne psihološke nijanse svojih junaka pruža nam knjigu kakva ostavlja trajne tragove i razmiče naša područja razmišljanja. 9
