So many time, Mister Proctor, she come to this very door beggin bread and a cup of cider and mark this whenever I turned her away empty she mumbled. You must remember, Goody Proctor last month a Monday, I think she walked away and I thought my guts would burst for two days after. Do you remember it? And so I told that to Judge Hathorne, and he asks her so Goody Good, says he, what curse do you mumble that this girl must fall sick after turning you away? And then she replies: (Mimicking an old crone.) Why, your excellence, no curse at all; I only say my commandments; I hope I may say my commandments, says she. Aye, but then Judge Hathorne say, Recite for us your commandments! and of all the ten she could not say a single one. She never knew no commandments, and they had her in a flat lie!

2 Irene Ruddock Lady of Letters A card from the opticians this morning saying that their records indicate that it s two years since they supplied me with spectacles and that by now they would almost certainly be in need of verification and suggesting I call at my earliest convenience. I thought that was nice so I took my trusty Platignum and dashes off an answer forthwith. I said I thought it was very considerate of them to have kept me in mind and while I was quite satisfied with my spectacles at the present moment I was grateful to them for them drawing the matter to my attention and in the event of noticing any deterioration I would in due course get in touch with them. (She picks up her pen) It s stood me in good stead this pen. Mother bought it for me last time she was able to get over to Harrogate. It s been a real friend. (She glances out the window)angie her name is. I heard him shout oh her as I went by en route for the post office. He was laid out underneath his car wanting a spanner and she came out, transistor in one hand, kiddy in the other. Thin little thing, bruise on its arm. I thought, Well, you ve got a car, you ve got a transistor, it s about time you invested in some curtains. She can t be more than twenty and by the look of her she s expecting another. I passed the place where there was a broken step I wrote to the council was a danger to the public. Little ramp there now, access for the disabled. I wrote to the Queen about it. Had a charming letter sent back from a lady in waiting saying that Her Majesty appreciated my interest and that my letter has been passed on to the appropriate authority. The upshot eventually is I get a long letter from the chief cleansing officer to Westminster City Council apologising profusely and enclosing a rundown of their Highways and Maintenance Budget. That s been my experience generally people are only to grateful to have things pointed out. They keynote is participation. Of course I wrote back to thank him and then blow me if I didn t get another letter thanking me for mine. So I wrote back saying I hadn t been expecting another letter and there was no need to have written again and was this an appropriate use of public resources? They didn t even bother to reply. Typical.

3 Mickey Blood Brothers MICKEY I wish I was our Sammy Our Sammy's nearly ten. He's got two worms and a catapult An' he's built a underground den. But I'm not allowed to go in there, I have to stay near the gate, 'Cos me Mam says I'm only seven, But I'm not, I'm nearly eight! I sometimes hate our Sammy, He robbed me toy car y' know, Now the wheels are missin' an' the top's broke off, An' the bleedin' thing won' go. An' he said when he took it, it was just like that, But it wasn't, it went dead straight, But y' can't say nott'n when they think y' seven An' y' not, y' nearly eight. I wish I was our Sammy, Y' wanna see him spit, Straight in y' eye from twenty yards An' every time a hit. He's allowed to play with matches, And he goes to bed dead late, And I have to go at seven, Even though I'm nearly eight. Y' know our Sammy, He draws nudey women, Without arms, or legs, or even heads In the baths, when he goes swimmin'. But I'm not allowed to go to the baths, Me Mam says I have to wait, 'Cos I might get drowned, cos I'm only seven, But I'm not, I'm nearly eight. Y' know our Sammy, Y' know what he sometimes does? He wees straight through the letter box Of the house next door to us. I tried to do it one night, But I had to stand on a crate, 'Cos I couldn't reach the letter box But I will by the time I'm eight.

5 Nancy Oliver As to the man, then name of Monks - once you find Monks, there you'll find Oliver Twist. He is tall, and a strongly made man, but not stout; he has a lurking walk, and as he walks, constantly looks over his shoulder, first on one side, and then on the other. Don't forget that, for his eyes are sunk in his head so much deeper than any other man's, that you might almost tell him by that alone. His face is dark, like his hair and eyes, and although he can't be more than six or eight and twenty, withered and haggard. He has desperate fits, and sometimes even bites his hands and covers them with wounds. I have only seen him twice, and both times he was covered up in a large cloak. I think that's all I can give you to know him by. Stay though upon his throat, there is a broad red mark, like a burn or a scald. And now I must go. No, you can do nothing to help me. I am past all hope, indeed.

6 Victoria Just Like I say, just standing at the bus stop, thinking about, well it sounds a bit surreal maybe, but I was thinking about apples. And I got this creepy feeling down at the back of my neck, and I turned, and I saw this, him, just, well, lying here, like that and I said Oh my God, exactly like you just did, and I came over. I was just waiting for the bus, thinking about apples. I m an apple farmer, as it happens well I used to be. Up until last year I had my own orchards, growing hundreds of different types of apples. Red delicious, Golden Delicious, Spartan, Empire, Ida the Red, Jonathan Mackintosh, Northern Spy. And that s just a few. But did you know that in medieval times, there were over two hundred different species of apples growing in England? Albert Just I know what I saw, how dare you tell me what I saw. Are you making fun of what I saw? Are you making fun of me? You say that my detectives won t find fingerprints, that s because you wiped them off, I know you did because I saw you. Well, I distinctly saw you let go of the handle of the murder weapon, and you letting go of the handle and immediately after you d run at the victim even though you hadn t quarrelled, you stabbed him in the back with it.
