Leigh Anne Jasheway, M.P.H. tgetmadgetfunny on Facebook Description: Stress isn t something you can brush or floss away, and unfortunately the dental profession has one of the highest stress levels of any professional group. Fortunately, there are tools that work (put that drill away!) that are also fun and easy to use. This interactive and playful session will focus on the physiological and emotional benefits of humor, practical steps for finding the funny in daily stressors, and strategies for integrating a lighter touch in your practice, with your co-workers and patients. The tools you ll come away with will help improve your life, your health and your sanity. Educational objectives: At the conclusion of this break-out session, attendees will be able to: Identify the physical and mental health consequences of overstressing; Understand why the dental profession has such high levels of stress; Recognize their own stress triggers; Understand the benefits of laughter and play on managing stress and improving health; Identify the four theories underlying why we laugh; Differentiate between positive and negative (inclusive and exclusive) types of humor; Recognize their ego voices and identify strategies for minimizing them when they create unnecessary stress.
3 S T R E S S It s important to pay attention to your stress level Up to 90% of all our health problems have too much stress as a component this includes all chronic conditions that make our lives more difficult In one survey, 65% of employees said workplace stress is a problem for them, and 34% blamed their jobs for a loss of sleep. Those in the dental profession have more emotional health-related illness than most other professions Heart disease and high blood pressure are 25% higher among those in the dental profession than in the general population Why am I so stressed? Isolation Pursuit of perfectionism Confined space in which to work Patient anxiety and dislike of the experience Inability to hold conversations with coworkers throughout the day Lack of exercise leading to injury and chronic pain, which compound stress Work/life balance issues Social stress Just some of the negative consequences of too much stress High blood pressure and decreased heart function Compromised immune system Headaches, back aches, muscle aches and stiffness Gastrointestinal distress Burnout and anger issues Memory problems and fuzzy thinking Grumpy, Sleepy, Dopey
4 If we didn t laugh, we d all go insane. Jimmy Buffet Sense of humor and playfulness are built into all mammals to help us reduce stress and bond with other members of our tribe Laughter combats the negative consequences of being over-stressed. It: Produces endorphins, natural feel-good painkillers Improves cardiovascular health, reducing heart rate and blood pressure Enhances your immune system, helping you avoid disease Improves brain function, memory, and creativity Tones your muscles and strengthens your neurological system Reduces anxiety, depression, and fear Boosts joy, optimism, and life satisfaction We don t just laugh when something s funny Arousal relief Social bonding Incongruity Superiority the only type of humor that is exclusive and can be harmful What is PLAY? Physically active in a way your body doesn t usually move Laughter-inducing Adventurous takes you out of your comfort zone Youthful you don t feel your age while participating it
