KCO Fact Sheet: On the way to KCO A Travel Activity Booklet For the driver and adult passengers: You ve got a [car/bus] load of [happy/worried/tired/rowdy/shy/excited] kids and [1/2/3/4] hour s drive ahead of you. How are you going to make the best use of that time? If you are the driver, your first priority is to get the children and yourself [to/from] KCO safely. This means you will have checked that your car is roadworthy and you are awake and alert. Road safety tells us that safe drivers just drive. You do not want children to distract the driver from their main task. The driver is not an activities director. Hopefully, another adult or teen passenger can keep the kids reasonably quiet and occupied so that the driver can just drive without too much distraction. Having some activities to keep children occupied can be a help. Tips: If children tend to get carsick, encourage them to look out the window. Reading or focusing the eyes on a hand-held game tends to make motion sickness worse. It s also a good idea to encourage kids who are prone to travel sickness to face forward and not turn around. And be sure you have a bucket available in case of emergency! Observe a no food in the car rule. If your trip is more than two hours, take a break a toilet and water stop, and possibly a re-arranging of seats when kids get back in the vehicle Here are some tried and true ways of entertaining travelling kids. You ll probably remember your own games and versions from your childhood. You may intersperse more participatory games with songs or stories on a CD.

KCO WONDERING Maybe you ve already wondered what KCO is going to be like this year. Tell some people around you what you expect. Then, wonder what would make KCO a great experience for you. Talk about this. Then, wonder what you could do to help make KCO a great experience for someone else. Talk about this. Jesus Easter Team Do this by yourself. Close your eyes. Let your mind wander. What are some things you think of when you hear the phrase Jesus Easter Team? Let one wondering lead to another. After a while, you open your eyes. Talk with others in your car about what you have thought. Christmas Song Read out the words to this old Christmas folk song.* It s been sung and recorded by many different people. If you were producing a recording of the song... What would it sound like? Who would sing it? What instruments would be used? What parts would be fast/slow; loud/soft; in a major key/minor key? (CHORUS) I wonder as I wander out under the sky how Jesus the Saviour did come for to die for poor ordin ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky 1. When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall with wise men and farmers and shepherds and all. But high from God's heaven, a star's light did fall and the promise of ages it then did recall. 2. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing a star in the sky or a bird on the wing or all of God's angels in heaven to sing, he surely could have it, 'cause he was the King (CHORUS) I wonder as I wander out under the sky how Jesus the Saviour did come for to die for poor ordin ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky. *The song has been recorded by many artists including Julie Andrews, Harry Connick, jr and Vanessa Williams.

CAR TEAM Team Car Imagine that you are parts of the vehicle you are travelling in. Each person can tell what car part they are like and what that car part contributes to Team Car. No I There s a saying: There s no I in TEAM. What does this mean to you? Do you reckon it s true? My teams Think of the teams you belong to formal and informal. How did you get to be part of the team? Wonder about what they mean for your life. If you had to drop out of all but one of these teams, which one would you stick with? Why? Our team Imagine that the people in your car are a team. Work together as a team to answer these questions: What would your team do? What would your team name be? What would your team motto be? What kind of animal would be your team mascot? What would your team cheer be? Who would your team coach be?

SIGNING Learn to spell KCO in two-handed Auslan* spelling. See how fast you can spell it. Then try spelling JESUS EASTER TEAM. Then do your name and the names of people around you. *Auslan is the sign language of the Australian Deaf community.

ON THE LOOKOUT Check out the world as you pass by. Try one of these games. Eastery It s nearly Easter. As you drive along, whenever someone spots something that makes them think of Easter (eg a rabbit or an advert for hot cross buns, or a church steeple with a cross) that person calls Eastery and explains what they have seen and what it has to do with Easter. No repeats of the same item. Weird or wonderful All players are on the lookout for things that are weird or wonderful. First player to spot something calls weird or wonderful and points out the item so others can see it. Alternate between things that are weird and things that are wonderful. You may keep a record and end the game by identifying the weirdest and the most wonderful thing you have seen on the trip. Cloud creatures Keep an eye on the clouds. What shapes do you see? Find 13 in (20)13 The object is to look out for 13 items of a particular colour. Agree on a colour, then each player looks for items of that colour. The first to reach 13 is the winner. Make this game more interesting by placing limits, for example only cars, only stationary objects, or only on the right side of the car. This can be a competition between two teams looking on opposite sides of the road. Cow Counting Set a time limit for this game before starting, eg 15 minutes. Count the number of cows (or traffic lights, or blue houses, or... ) you see in the time frame. This can be a competition between two teams looking on opposite sides of the road. I spy One player starts by describing something they see, usually outside the car. They describe the spied item using the first letter or another clue, eg I spy with my little eye something that begins with the letter c. Or I spy with my little eye something that rhymes with loud. Then players take turns taking guessing until someone correctly guesses the answer, such as cloud. License Plates Keep an eye out for interesting license plates. When you see one, wonder about why the owner chose that combination of letters and numbers. Think of an appropriate personalised plate for the vehicle that s taking you to KCO. Look for a license plate that has a letter T, then on that has an E, then one with an A, and finally one with an M. How quickly can you find these letters as a team? Or individually? Now look for license plates that have the letters of J E S U S or K C O or F R I E N D S.

TIME TO TALK There s nothing worse than... One player makes a statement beginning, There s nothing worse than... (eg a hangnail). The next player tries to top the problem: There s nothing worse than... (a hangnail when it touches soapy water). You can continue building on one theme or move to a completely different area; but each statement should somehow be worse than the previous one. There s nothing better than... Play just like the previous game, but keep building better and better concepts. Last Letter/First Letter Decide on a category (eg countries, food, people s names). One player starts with a word (in this case, say, Latvia). Then the next player has to name a country that starts with the last letter of the one just named (say, Australia), and so on. Try not to repeat words. Twenty Questions One player picks an object or person. The other players take turns asking questions that may help narrow down the possibilities, such as Is it a place? Is it in SA? If the answer is yes the player continues questioning until they receive a no answer. Continue until the item is discovered or until twenty questions have been asked. Alliteration Game Find alliteration words for your name, a friend's name or something you see outside the window. Make them as funny as possible, eg Super surfer Sam or dirty dodgey Datsun. Straight Face One person is interviewed. The others pick a phrase, eg My monkey s moustache or My KCO tent. The interviewers ask questions, and the person must answer with the given phrase and try to keep a straight face. Use questions like: o What do you brush your teeth with? o What is your favourite breakfast food? o What would you write with? o What do you comb your hair with? When the person being interviewed laughs, it is someone else's turn. KCO stories Anyone who has been to KCO in previous years can tell about their funniest KCO experience, or their best KCO experience. TV imagination Choose a character from one favourite television program, eg Bart from The Simpsons, and tell what might happen if he appeared in another favourite television program, eg Junior MasterChef.

CAR-AOKE Sing along with some of your old-favourite camp songs, eg Boa Constrictor I m being swallowed by a boa constrictor, I m being swallowed by a boa constrictor, I m being swallowed by a boa constrictor, And I don t like it very much.
