1 GOZO COLLEGE SECONDARY SCHOOLS HALF YEARLY EXAMINATION Form 3 ENGLISH LISTENINGCOMPREHENSION Teacher s Paper Steve Jobs: the world pays tribute Time: 15 mins Track 3 It s a dark day in Silicon Valley, said Matt Drance, an old Apple employee. He was talking about the death of Steve Jobs, who started the company Apple Inc. He died at 56 from cancer. In Beijing, people went to the Apple Store with flowers and candles. They also wrote messages: You have made our lives better. Thank you for changing the world, said one message in English. It seemed that everyone had been touched by his work. Messages came from everywhere. President Obama said he changed the way each of us sees the world. For many businesses computing, film, music, mobile telephones and, most recently, mobile computing Steve Jobs changed everything. Again and again, he refused to do what everyone else said and introduced his own ideas instead. In 1979, three years after starting Apple with Steve Wozniak, Jobs visited Xerox s Palo Alto Research Center in California. He saw a system that used windows and a mouse. It wasn t complete, he said. It wasn t exactly right. But within ten minutes, it was clear that every computer in the world would work this way someday. Jobs developed computers that used the new windowing system. Jobs wanted it to be simple to use. Computers, he thought, were just too complicated. Using window systems was much easier. Microsoft agreed. Bill Gates used the windows idea and created Windows, which was more popular than Apple s products and became the most widely used desktop computer system in the world. Jobs was kicked out of Apple in 1985 and, during the next 12 years, Microsoft took over personal computing. All the computers used windows. Jobs had been right. When he returned to Apple, Jobs quickly took over. It was then that he started looking at the music business. The ipod changed everything, because it is tiny, quick and easy to use. Then Jobs wanted to sell digital music digitally. Apple wanted to sell one million songs in the first year. When the itunes Music Store opened in 2003, it sold the first million songs in a week. Within a year, it had sold nearly 100 million songs and the ipod had 70% of the music player market. The iphone was the result of a two-and-a-half year project to use touch screens with computers. In mid-2011, Apple became the world s biggest mobile phone maker. Apple introduced the ipad in January 2010: a computer you could carry, and control by touch, with a ten-hour battery life, that used apps. Apple sold tens of millions of them. All the devices had one important thing in common: people loved them. Now, the questions are about Apple and its future. Can it be as creative without Steve Jobs?

COMPREHENSION Read the following article carefully then answer all the questions. Coca-Cola secret recipe revealed? It s the real thing, says radio host Ed Pilkington in New York 16 February, 2011 For almost 125 years, the recipe for Coca-Cola has been a secret and this has been a very successful marketing strategy for the company. According to the story, the fizzy drink s famous 7X flavourings have remained unchanged since they were first blended in Today, only two Coke executives know the recipe, neither of whom can travel on the same plane in case the secret dies with them. Now, one of America s most famous radio broadcasters says he has discovered the Coke secret. Ira Glass, presenter of the programme This American Life, says he has found a copy of the recipe. The original is still supposedly kept in a bank in Atlanta, in a burglar-proof room. The formula was created by John Pemberton, an Atlanta chemist who made cough medicines and other drinks in his spare time. In 1887, he sold the recipe to a businessman who immediately placed it in the Atlanta bank for safekeeping. Glass came across a recipe that he believes is the secret formula in a back issue of Pemberton s local paper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, while he was researching an entirely different story. On an inside page of the 8 February 1979 edition, he found an article that claimed to have discovered the secret 7X formula. The article was based on information found in an old notebook that belonged to Pemberton s best friend, RR Evans. Glass was intrigued and, after some investigation, found that the notebook had been passed from generation to generation until it reached a chemist in Georgia called Everett Beal, whose widow still has it. The rediscovered recipe includes the following ingredients: extract of coca leaves, caffeine, plenty of sugar, lime juice, vanilla and caramel. The all-important 7X flavourings are added

5 into that syrup: alcohol and six oils orange, lemon, nutmeg, coriander, neroli and cinnamon. The formula is very similar to the recipe worked out by Mark Pendergrast who wrote a history of Coca-Cola in Coke s secret recipe is actually partly a myth. The recipe has, in fact, changed substantially over time. Cocaine, a legal drug in Pemberton s time, was removed from the drink in Extract of coca leaves is still used but only after the cocaine has been removed. In 1980, the company largely replaced sugar with a cheaper sweetener that is often found in American food and drink. Passionate Coke fans were not impressed by this change. Despite these controversies, one element has remained constant over time: Coke s commitment to keeping its own secret. People have been talking about the secret recipe for more than a century and this has been good for business. The company has reacted to the This American Life story in a way that has been typical of its commercial strategy since the 19th century. Many people have tried to discover our secret formula but they ve been unsuccessful, Coca-Cola s Kerry Tressler said. Guardian News & Media 2011 A.
