2 Ch 5 summary Chapter 5 is about how the boys were going to survive on the island. First the have an assembly about why the fire is important because a ship can see them and be saved. The hunters did not like this because they wanted meat to eat. Another this is that the little children were scared of a creator, in this chapter they think it may be a ghost on the island. They come up with planes how to protect themselves from the ghost. Then after all of this they believe having rule is important because they should try to keep things in order because there are no growup around, but Jack starts to break these rules when piggy gets the couch.

3 Imagery When the fire went out on the island, Jack and ralph had an argument over what was more important. Ralph said you hunters! You can laugh! But I Tell you the smoke is more important than the pig however often you kill one. Do you all see? After Ralph had enough with the hunter he said we got to make smoke up there-or die.( Golding pg 81).

4 The highlighted words Hunters- people that kill or hunt Smoke- fire, smog, Pig- dirty animal Kill- blood, murder Die- death, skeleton

5 Question time??? 1) Why do the hunters not care about getting off the island? 2) What's important about the id when the hunter are laughing?

6 Wheel of Morality turn, turn, turn,what is the message we shall learn? ( Animaniacs warner brothers) Through the use of imagery Godling show that the Jack; the Id, is supcontusly pushing out important factors to survive, over his driven desires for food and hunger. The fact the hunters are laughing means that they are not taking getting off the island seriously, and just want to kill rather than being saved.

7 Characterization of jack what you want me to say then? I was wrong to call this assembly so late. We ll have a vote on them; on ghost I mean;and then go the the shelters because we're all tired. No-Jack is it?-wait a minute. I ll say here and now that I don t believe in ghosts. Or I don't think I do.but I don t believe in them,not now that is,in the dark. 10 What is the Message? though the use of indirect characterization of speech, this show that unsure what to believe. This is because he want to be strong and is driven from power.also he is also mocking Ralph which shows he does not want Ralph to have power of him. The ghost is important because it show that the other boys on the island are childish. This is because the there fears are creating imaginary stories to help them cope with being on the island without grownups.

11 Juxtaposition When piggy wanted to say sometime he held out his hand for the conch but Ralph shook his head, his speech was planted, point by point ( 80). Once Piggy got the couch Jack disagreed with Ralph's choses do he said: That's right- favour piggy as you always do-. As they argued Jack said piggy was not allowed to talk wich leaded ralph to say The rules, you're breaking the rules (91).

12 Piggy VS Jack Piggy held out his had for the couch but does not receive it. Piggy got the couch Ralph favours piggy Jack shook his head no to piggy Jack is breaking the rules This shows that piggy is Intelligent and has insight to help but do not treat him fairly. This shows that Jack is driven by his desire for power that the coach gives him because people respect him.

13 Question time??? 1) What is significant about piggy having the couch? 2) Why does Jack react the way he does?

14 What you learn from this passage The significance of piggy have the conch is that he is the intelligent part of the superego. He would have the most rational response, and most valid points. Also this shows us that the Superego is trying to take control over the mind. Jack relates negatively to piggy having the couch because he has lost his power, that he is driven to. Also He want everyone to follow him and not piggy.

15 illusion of adults Once Piggy, simon and Ralph are done arguing with Ralph they start to miss their parents. They says grownups know things, they're not afraid of the dark, They wouldn't quarrel, Or break my specs, Or talk about a beast (94)

17 Time for the questions 1) Why do they want grownups? ( not the fact they know things 94!!!!! ) 2) What does this tell you about the ego and superego?

18 What is the message of the passage? They want grownups because they are sacred and do not want to face reality. Also the fact that They are making up this idea of these perfect Growups that can help them get off the island show that they are having doubts about themselves. This tells the reader that the ego and the superego are vulnerable, when dealing with stress. The fact that they are trying to cope by creating this image of their parent shows that they are fragile, and need order.

19 So what does this have to do with trauma and War??????

20 The Thesis statement When the human psyche is exposed to the trauma of war the ego becomes vulnerable letting the Id s desires take over, A person's actions.
