1 Drama H Gogebic Community College Fall 2016 Dr. Kathleen Carlton Johnson kathleen.johnson@gogebic.edu Drama 102 Introduction to the Art of the Movies An introduction to the social significance of the cinema through the decades showing how film reflects the historical, moral and intellectual atmosphere of its day. Course Objectives: Students will develop a cinematic literacy, they will recognize and use basic technical and critical vocabulary for motion pictures. Students will understand the role of genre in American film history and be able to show how these genres reflect American Culture. They will change their role of passive viewer and become a critical viewer by the end of this class. Structure of Class: There are two tests, a midterm and a final both 30 points each. There is a presentation of your project at the end of the class. It will be both written and visual. These three items account for 90% of your grade. I hold 10 % or ten final points for attendance, discussion in class and Critique notebook. This makes up 100% of your grade. You are expected to be on time for each class. This is college not high school. You are not to use cell phones or computers when in class. Cell phones may be checked at break. If this becomes a problem, you will be asked to leave the class. You are expected to be to all classes, there will be no make up exams without a certified medical reason. You must have projects completed on time or they will not be counted for a grade.

2 You will keep a Critique Notebook on the movies we see and view while not in class. This will be handed in before class is completed and a grade given. Keep it clean and tidy, for it reflects your work. No make up work will be given. Please no food in the classroom, drinks are allowed. If you are under 18 I will need a signed release for you to view movies for this class. Please review the Acceptable Use Policy in your student handbook in dealing with computer systems and using networks owned by Gogebic Community College. Wi Fi is available in the school area. Plagiarism policy as below Dishonesty, Cheating: Dishonesty of any kind, cheating on examinations or any assigned work may be dealt with in any manner deemed suitable by the instructor, including the recording of a failing grade for the course. Cheating in examinations may also result in the student appearing before the Conduct Committee and possible suspension from school if circumstances warrant.
