visit: The Canadian Society of Cinematographers was founded in 1957 by a group of Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa cameramen. Since then over 800 cinematographers and persons in associated occupations have joined the organization. The purpose of the CSC is to promote the art and craft of cinematography and to provide tangible recognition of the common bonds that link film and video professionals, from the aspiring student and camera assistant to the news veteran and senior director of photography. We facilitate the dissemination and exchange of technical information, and endeavor to advance the knowledge and status of our members within the industry. As an organization dedicated to furthering technical assistance, we maintain contact with nonpartisan groups in our industry, but have no political or union affiliation. 4 PRESIDENT S REPORT It s A Wrap er, not quite Officially the 50th Anniversary celebratory year of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers is now over. Many photographs, news items and TO THE FUTURE: As part of the opening ceremonies of the 2008 CSC Awards, Vice-President George Willis csc, SASC, presented a framed document to Director ex-officio and newest member of the CSC Executive, Dylan Macleod csc as a symbolic recognition of a new generation of cinematographers. As this 50th anniversary year celebration draws to a close we look forward to the next 50 years of the CSC... and beyond, Willis said. Of course, many of us will not be around to enjoy the 100th anniversary but we must ensure that the CSC does in fact reach that goal. Therefore, we would like to make a request to the future generation of cinematographers. We wish to symbolically hand over to you, for safekeeping, this Society and all it stands for. We trust that you will take the Society to new heights and strive for the highest standards possible in the industry that we all love and are dedicated to. other memorabilia for use in a commemorative limited edition book were kindly entrusted to us for copying and scanning and in some cases archiving and preservation. Many of theses images were used in the CSC s 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book. A DVD was assembled and edited from interviews done with many members of the CSC and inserted into the cover of the book. After many months of layout and assembly the printing of the book was finally realized but unfortunately as with any production there were some glitches, the most significant of which resulted in the book s cover sleeve not being ready; therefore the complete book/ sleeve was not available for presentation at the CSC Awards Gala. This is in the process of being corrected and when completed the newly printed sleeve which serves to protect the volume will be distributed. All CSC Members and Sponsors will receive a complimentary copy of the complete book with cover in the mail shortly. However, anticipating a positive response to the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, the CSC thought it prudent to print more than the exact amount of copies first calculated. We are pleased to offer a limited number of copies to those interested in sharing the history of the CSC. These books will be available at the very reasonable cost of $50.00 per book and it will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Don t delay and miss out on the opportunity as this is a limited edition, one-time printing. Once they re gone, that s it. The CSC would also greatly appreciate any feedback and comment with regard to this commemorative book and it is hoped that the articles and photographs contained in the pages will strike a chord with those who read it and in turn result in some articles being written for the CSC News Magazine. As well, we are also hopeful that photographs of CSC members, both archival and current will be forwarded to the CSC for inclusion in future articles based on the history of the society. With the owner s permission, the CSC undertakes to photograph, copy and/or scan the material and return the originals safely, if so requested. This year the CSC intends to embark on a project to formally catalogue, archive and preserve all materials and donated equipment currently in the possession of the CSC, with more donations imminent. This task will essentially be a labour of love and we are looking for members to assist us in the preservation of our heritage. There will be more information regarding this in a future article in the CSC News Magazine. A special moment to note at the CSC Awards evening was the symbolic handing over of the CSC to the future generation. No doubt this came as a surprise to many of those present at the awards as it was somewhat of a departure from the norm. 2 CSC News - May 2008
Cinematographer Shows Courage To Come Back to Work After Ten Year Physical Rehab In the filmmaking business, there are no guarantees. Unfortunately, the same holds true in medical treatment and physical rehabilitation. And therein lies the reason that cinematographer John Banovich csc, BFM, has been named as the 2008 Courage To Come Back Award recipient in the Physical Rehabilitation category. The South Surrey, BC, resident is one of six to receive the award this year. John was travelling in his Jeep on the King George Highway when he was hit head-on by a drunk driver, who died from the force of the impact. The collision, on February , was not related to work in any way but of course, it would impact John s life for ever more. Reached prior to the award ceremony, John described how the collision and rehab have had an adverse affect on my work. With all of the damaged and replaced parts, I can get pretty sore by day s end, especially on the long-haul productions. Having said this, I am a very passionate filmmaker and will typically just put up with the pain, keeping it to myself if at all possible. Immediately following the accident, John was rushed to hospital where doctors began to stabilize his injuries to his face, wrist, arm and hips, reconstructing his face, even rebuilding his right socket and wiring his jaw shut. They put plates and screws in his wrist, face and hips, and had to remove the patches of fabric from his clothing that had been pressed into his flesh by the seat belt. John spent an agonizing three months in hospital, most of the time being confined in isolation so his screams of pain wouldn t disturb the other patients. On a liquid-only diet, filled with painkillers, John s weight plummeted to 91 pounds. Surveying the damage to his pelvis and legs, doctors said he d likely never walk again and by the time he got home, he was wheelchair-bound, relying on others for everything, even bathing. The pain and the trauma of that crash lingered with John and he began having horrifying nightmares and was prescribed more pills: antidepressants this time. Over the next 18 months, however, John started the long fight back, progressing from a wheelchair, to crutches, then a cane and eventually walking on his own once again. The one-time avid athlete and longdistance runner had another problem: finances. Unable to work, he was forced to sell nearly everything he owned. His promising film career looked hopeless: who would or could hire someone so disabled, so thin, so scarred, and unable to walk? Facing such emotional and physical challenges, John says he had to separate the me from the collision in order to move on. I would have remained trapped in that traumatic cycle otherwise, and never advanced in my career. I have had to over come an insane number of obstacles in my recovery, which consumed a lot of my time and energy, but having made it through that, I feel I now could make it through almost anything. After all, says Banovich, I m in the filmmaking business, and as a director/ cinematographer there certainly are no guarantees or securities that come with the job. And yet there was a spark in John, something that made him get up, do the painful rehab work, and continue trying. One other thing motivated John the desire to tell his story so that others would not suffer as he has. One month after getting out of hospital, John spoke to 800 young people at a rally about the dangers of drinking and driving. He told them his powerful story and realized that the telling, too, was part of his recovery. Since then, he has continued to spread Cinematographer John Banovich csc, BFM, will be honoured for his ten-year fight to overcome injuries suffered in a car accident. Don t focus on the negatives, Banovich says. the message to countless others, speaks regularly to high school and college students, new Canadian groups, First Nations groups, anyone who is willing to hear about his horrific collision and the tragic, lifelong impact it has had on him and his loved ones. He cherishes the thousands of thank-you cards and letters he gets in return. John reads them in recovery every time he has to go in for another surgery, motivating him to get through more pain. To others who are suffering John says, You might be asking yourself, Why did this happen to me? Do not allow yourself to focus on the negative allow yourself to be open to positive change for the better and focusing on a future time when you will have overcome your adversities. As far as sharing preventative advice, he says, We must protect each other by getting involved with our communities and making them safer. If you see an impaired driver, call 911 and report their plate number, vehicle type and the direction they are traveling. Everyone is potentially a victim CSC News - May
to this leading cause of death and injury on Canadian roadways. If you are at an event and you believe someone has had too much alcohol to drink, do NOT get in that vehicle under any circumstances. Try to convince them not to drive and if that fails, call 911 and report them. Ultimately, you may not have only save their lives but innocent victim s lives too. I wish someone had done this for me. Of course, a tragic and serious accident has profound medical, personal and professional ramifications. Working professionals and particularly self-employed or contract workers should take extra precautions against what might not be unavoidable. My advice about being prepared for a situation such as mine would be to make sure you fully read over your complete insurance policy. You may find that your policy does not cover everything you would expect and when you need it the most you may find yourself with out the appropriate support. As cinematographers knowing people who have video and photography equipment, ask friends and family to take as many photographs and video as they can. Today, John is back in the film business, both behind and in front of the camera, and is happily married with a baby on the way. He volunteers with MADD speaking with the media and politicians, running every year in Stanley Park to raise funds - still giving weekly presentations, and continues to inspire his friends and family because they know that even now, John battles chronic pain on a daily basis and keeps on trying, keeps on smiling, keeps on finding The Courage To Come Back. The Courage To Come Back Awards celebrate people who have valuable lessons to share as they have courageously battled back from illness, adversity or injury. Through Courage, British Columbians are acknowledged for their accomplishments, positive attitudes and willingness to give back to their communities. Awards are given in six categories including: mental health, physical rehabilitation, medical, addiction, social adversity and youth. John receives his Courage To Come Back Award at the 10th Anniversary gala dinner at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver on Thursday, May 8th. The Coast Mental Health Foundation (CMHF) was formed in 2001 to raise funds for community mental health services and to educate the public about the needs of people with a serious mental illness. Since 1974, the Coast Foundation Society (CFS) has been providing high quality housing, employment programs, social opportunities and other community mental health services for people with serious and persistent mental illnesses. By presenting the stories of six amazing recipients each year at The Courage To Come Back Awards, Coast Mental Health Foundation says it strives to offer hope to all those suffering from illness, adversity or injury and demonstrates that all people have value and dignity regardless of the illness, adversity or injury they have faced. Lee Rickwood, with input from Coast Mental Health Foundation, Darrell Burnham, Executive Director, and Patricia Wiggins, Resource Development Coordinator. 4 CSC News - May 2008
CSC Awards 2008 By Don Angus Editor Emeritus / Photography by John Narvali President Joan Hutton csc called it Anniversary Part II. In her welcoming remarks to the 2008 CSC Awards gala on March 29, Joan noted that the celebration of the CSC s 50 th anniversary was continuing. Last year, she said, we honoured the founders who worked through the last four months of 1957 and throughout 1958 to establish a working organization. Their dream was to build a Society that would give cinematography a new definition a unique and essential place in the industry. This year we are proud to present our 50 th anniversary commemorative book and complementary DVD. Copies of the book and DVD were presented to all guests at the end of the evening. Copies have gone out or are on their way to all members and corporate sponsors. In her remarks in the printed Awards program, the president noted that the book and DVD were the Society s biggest project to date. The task proved to be a greater challenge than we expected, but we hope you agree that the final product was worth the effort and the wait, she wrote. We like to think that 1958 was a vital, integral part of the founding process and therefore the 2008 presentation of the book and video fits right in. She said in her speech that one of the most remarkable impressions of the book and DVD is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Clothing, cars and equipment may change, but the substance of how to capture a moving image remains the same it belongs to the man or woman behind the camera. That is essentially the heart of our CSC Awards: To recognize not the technical apparatus with which image acquisition is achieved, but the professional skill of the man or woman responsible for visual acuity and artistic interpretation. Joan thanked all the volunteers, professional contributors and the enthusiastic participation of corporate sponsors who made the book and video project a reality. We are especially indebted to the many retired members and families of deceased members who sent us so many historical photographs. The president was followed to the lectern by Vice-President George Willis csc, SASC, who presented a framed document to Director ex-officio Dylan Macleod csc as a symbolic recognition of a new generation of cinematographers. George then introduced host John Bourgeois, an experienced Canadian actor and stage director. He is also director of the Acting for Film and TV Program at Humber College s School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Until his retirement, Bob Bocking pursued his longtime love of nature cinematography. Education, both on the TV screen and in the classroom, was an integral part of his film experience, and his work has been recognized with many honours, including the 1979 Bill Hilson FUJI FILM AWARD: Bob Bocking csc Presented by Graeme Parcher, Vice-President, Motion Picture, Pro Video and Recording Media, FUJIFILM Canada Inc. Award and the 1990 Kodak New Century Award from the CSC. A CSC member since 1962, Bob helped launch, with George Morita csc, the CSC camera assistants course, and he has served the Society as president, vicepresident and membership chair. He is the current chair of the CSC Awards committee and continues to serve as an adviser to the Executive Board. The Fujifilm Award recognizes his past and ongoing contributions to the Society. Bob and his wife, Erane, travelled from coast to coast in 1997, shooting The Physical Geography of Canada for the National Geographic Society in Washington They travelled to Australia in 1998 and Bob shot a whole nature program (Animals Down Under) on his Sony VX1000, winning two educational production awards. While cinematographer in the teaching aids department of the Toronto board of education in the late 1960s, Bob also freelanced for Keg Productions on the two television series Audubon Wildlife Theatre and Wild Canada. From , he worked full time for Keg shooting natural history television series and feature films, then returned to education as teaching master in the film production program at Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ont. When Conestoga s film production program amalgamated with the cinematography program at Humber College in Toronto in 1981, Bocking served as coordinator of the new Humber film and television production program until His association with National Geographic Educational Films Division resulted in the production of 10 award-winning educational films on natural history subjects, and he employed Humber College students on many of these projects to give them firsthand experience. Graeme Parcher noted that he was one of Bob s students at Humber College from He taught so many people in the industry who now are very successful in the business, and so much of their experience is rooted in his teaching at Humber. I have tremendous respect for Bob because he was always calm and even tempered; he never raised his voice or talked down to anybody. He was well suited to teaching. 10 CSC News - May 2008
Rodney Charters csc, asc The Kodak New Century Award For outstanding contribution to the art of cinematography KODAK NEW CENTURY AWARD: Rodney Charters csc, asc Presented by Johanna Gravelle, Country Manager, Kodak Canada Entertainment Imaging This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Kodak New Century Award, Johanna Gravelle, country manager of Kodak Canada Entertainment Imaging, told the 2008 CSC Awards. Developed to pay tribute to a cinematographer who has earned the admiration of his peers in the CSC, the Kodak New Century Award is as significant now as when it was when the first one was presented over two decades ago. This year, I m very pleased to present the 2008 Kodak New Century Award to Rodney Charters. Gravelle noted that Rodney was born to shoot. The son of a small-town photographer in New Zealand, he literally grew up in the darkroom of his father s studio. As the star of several of his father s 16mm dramas, Rodney learned to appreciate the magic of making movies and soon graduated to his now familiar role behind the camera. He made his first film, Film Exercise, after graduating with a B.A. in Art History from the University of Auckland, and it received such acclaim at the Sydney Film Festival that Rodney progressed to the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. From 1968 to 1971 Rodney called Britain home, spending one summer at the BBC and working on commercials in London under directors Tony Scott and Ridley Scott. Following a brief stint in the U.S., Charters was lured north to work on CTV Network documentaries in Toronto, eventually making his way from sound and editing to cinematography on W5. The next decade-and-a-half found him travelling the globe, honing his skills in locations from the heat of the South American jungles to the cold war in the Soviet Union. Back in Toronto in 1986 to work on his first feature, Youngblood, Rodney embraced the movie genre and subsequently shot Car 54, Where Are You? in 1994, Kull the Conqueror in 1997, and The Intern in After spending a number of years in Toronto and Vancouver working on television programs such as Friday the 13 th - The Series, The Commish, Stephen King s Sleepwalkers, The Hat Squad, and TekWar for which he received a Gemini nomination for Best Photography - Rodney relocated to the U.S. in 1996 as DOP for the first season of the TV series Nash Bridges, following up later that same year with The Pretender. His work on Roswell in 2001 led to the groundbreaking series 24, where he adapted his years of documentary experience to bring a tense, gritty realism never before seen on a primetime television series. That look depends heavily on the work of the camera operator, who has the freedom to interpret a scene instinctively. In describing 24, he explains, The images have life, they pulse with energy, they are edgy and single-minded in their need to tell the story. The photography is truthful and honest. Two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Cinematography echo that sentiment. It s a huge challenge to achieve that on-the-edge tension within a frenetic schedule that keeps the crew moving at such a frantic pace, but Rodney takes it all in stride. Partly because he has the artistic talent and worldly experience that comes from a lifetime of photography. But mostly because he intuitively just knows how to visually tell a story. He once said, To be a documentary shooter is to do a delicate dance between you and the subject. Rodney, thank you for allowing us to join you in that dance. CSC News - May
Roger Racine csc The Bill Hilson Award For outstanding service in the development of the motion picture industry BILL HILSON AWARD: Roger Racine csc Presented by Christian Racine, Director of Photography and President, Cinéfilms & Video The 2008 Bill Hilson Award was presented to Quebec film pioneer Roger Racine csc for his outstanding service contributing to the development of the motion picture industry in Canada. The presentation was made by his son, Christian Racine. It is a great honour for me to be here this evening to present the Bill Hilson Award to my father, Roger Racine. This award is presented every year to a person who has made outstanding contributions to the development of the Canadian film industry. I have been proud of my father for as far back as I can remember. I am proud of his achievements as a cinematographer nonpareil. I am proud to be president of the film company he founded 44 years ago, Cinéfilms & Vidéo Productions. And I have never been prouder of him than I am this evening. He is officially retired now, after over 60 years in the motion picture business. I know how much this award from the Canadian Society of Cinematographers means to him. The CSC has been very important to my father over the course of his impressive career. He was one of the earliest CSC members, and the former Chair of its Montreal chapter. Roger spent 20 years working at the NFB and the CBC in the company of major Canadian and international filmmaking pioneers becoming a celebrated producer, director and DOP before he founded Cinéfilms & Vidéo Productions in He has worked on hundreds of award-winning movies. In 1952, he was the cinematographer on La petite Aurore l enfant martyre, known as one of the most controversial and most representational of Quebec films. Based on a true story, the film achieved tremendous success, grossing some $100,000 in its first year of release. Big money in those days. Roger also contributed to one of the more celebrated films produced by the NFB during the sixties, Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Leonard Cohen. His credits as a cinematographer go back to 1944, when he shot the 10-minute short When the Plots Thicken for the NFB. He made his first feature film as a producer, director, director of photography and editor in The movie was called The Butler s Night Off. Roger took the picture to the federal Minister of Finance to appeal for government money to build a Quebec, a Canadian, movie industry. From that time to this, my father has been a staunch supporter of Canadian films. Roger has lived to see tangible growth in homegrown film production, particularly gratifying success in Quebec. His mantra has always been that Canada must have its own film industry with its own politics of film. Like Quebec, Canada must make their own films whether they do or don t work at the box office. A film has got to be part of the soul of the country. My father has never stopped dreaming. It will one day be his greatest legacy. 12 CSC News - May 2008
INDUSTRY NEWS Surveyors Reach Out to CSC European researchers are calling for input from Canadian DoPs on the practices and processes of motion picture production in the digital age. The Change of Image Capturing Formats in Motion Pictures is the subject of a survey started at the Stuttgart Media University (Hochschule der Medien) in Germany on March 15th, It is directed by Matthias Maasz, who is asking CSC members to participate in the survey, which aims to provide detailed documentation of the practices applied in the production of motion pictures in the age of the digital revolution. By definition all Directors of Photography of Motion Pictures from all over the world, who have had a theatrical release in Germany in the years between 1997 and 2007 are invited to participate. Distributors in Germany released 3425 Motion Pictures originating in more than 80 countries in this period. The survey is conducted within the framework of the Institute for Applied Research - IAF and should be completed on June 30th, The film database of the Entertainment Media Publishing GmbH in Munich, Germany has been taken as a basis for this poll. For practical reasons we couldn t consider any European, or even worldwide theatrical release by definition, Maasz says, but all Directors of Photography of motion pictures outside this definition e.g. if the film had a theatrical release in any other country, but not in Germany - or will have a theatrical release only in 2008 or later are kindly invited to take part in this survey by visiting Imago, the European Federation of Cinematographers is a partner of this survey project, helping to supply the necessary contact data. However there are many non-organized Directors of Photography that are invited to take part by visiting the web pages at eu. Further co-operation partners are the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin and the Institute for Literature, Art and Media Studies at the University of Konstanz, Germany. The direct link to the questionnaire in English language is humfragen.hdm-stuttgart.de/studiengang- MW/filmformat_eng/fragebogen.htm New Lenses Add Depth at Clairmont Dramatic depth-enhanced imagery that approaches 3D, but does not require special viewing devices, can be obtained by using patented v3 MOE lenses with digital parallax scanners now available, rental house Clairmont Camera reports. The v3 MOE lens adds realism, depth and shape to scenes or products, and provides a vivid improvement over conventional 2D film and telecast imagery effects are especially powerful in scenes shot with a moving camera. The innovative v3 image technology, which has been perfected over the past 12 years, is based on a moving optical element (MOE) lens that captures different points of view relative to the plane of focus. These slight shifts cause the viewer to interpret depth is such a manner that it enhances the realism of the shot and makes it more life-like. Technically, the iris of the v3 MOE lens rotates in a simple circle, with the amplitude (distance off center) and frequency (cycles per second) adjustable by the camera operator. The normal frequency is 4.3 cyclesper-second, which can be changed in relation to the capture speed of the camera. Changes in amplitude provide a different look and open up a range of creative options that cannot be achieved with normal fixed-iris lenses; one is the ability to create multiple depth layers in a scene by displacing objects from one another. T-stop and focus are also set with the remote controller. Clairmont Camera offers a 5-lens package that includes the controller, cabling, and 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85 mm and 135mm lenses. The v3 MOE lenses are equipped with PL mounts, and can be used with a wide range of film and digital cameras. Additional details on the v3 MOE lenses, including actual footage shot using this v3 technology, are available online at Clairmont has offices in Hollywood, Toronto, Vancouver and Albuquerque. 16 Improved Motion Picture Film Scanning Kodak and Lasergraphics say they are improving the quality of motion picture film scanning. Through a new collaborative arrangement, Lasergraphics will offer Kodak DIGITAL ICE Technology on its DIRECTOR series of film scanners. It is designed to automatically detect and eliminate dust, scratches and other anomalies while film images are being converted to digital files for postproduction. NFB LAUNCHES Strategic Planning: Doc Funding The NFB launched its new Strategic Plan ( ) to the filmmaking community at Hot Docs, and committed itself to addressing the challenges of an audiovisual world that is in full-scale structural revolution. The NFB also announced a new partnership with the Canadian Film Centre (CFC), creating what s called Canada s first program to develop theatrical documentaries. When Tom Perlmutter took over at the NFB last June, after more than five years experience heading the NFB s English Program, he began a series of cross-country meetings with major players in the documentary, animation, and new media. That experience, he says, coupled with a strong grounding in the institution s day-to-day operations, led him to propose the new plan. The Strategic Plan may be seen as an impassioned cry by some, but it aims to strengthen the role the institution plays in the audiovisual industry, and the important place it plays in the cultural life of the country. The NFB is at its best when it is true to its primary public mandate, when it functions as a creative laboratory for the audiovisual sector, when it pushes limits and takes risks. That is precisely the role of a public producer and distributor. It is precisely the NFB s role and it is the role we must continue to foster and strengthen, said Perlmutter. The NFB Strategic Plan is available online at The CFC NFB Feature Documentary Program, announced at a special Hot Docs Festival industry meet, will launch in the new year with the goal of developing successful original feature documentaries for international cinema audiences. The submission deadline for the Documentary program is August 29/08. The six-month CFC/NFB funding program was created for accomplished Canadian directors with a theatrical documentary concept. Designed to help directors develop cinematic documentaries that will advance the genre and achieve commercial and critical success, this immersive experience will combine several weeks of residency at the CFC with project-specific mentorship from some of Canada s and the world s greatest documentary talents. From Manufactured Landscapes to the most recent critically acclaimed Up The Yangtze!, Canadian feature documentaries continue to dazzle audiences worldwide with their cinematic vision and masterful storytelling, said Slawko Klymkiw, CFC Executive Director. As CFC commences our 20 th year of leadership in training content creators, we are proud to launch this new program with the NFB. CFC looks 14 CSC News - May 2008
forward to developing Canadian documentary talent and their stories for cinemas around the world. The CFC NFB Feature Documentary Program is an immersive experience specifically tailored to the precise needs of 4-6 participants who will collaborate with industry experts in a professional environment, followed by a supported inquiry phase focused on developing a treatment, and finally, shooting and editing a demo to demonstrate the power of characters and proposed visual approach. Participants projects will be considered for production at the conclusion of the Feature Documentary Program. The CFC NFB Feature Documentary Program is led by Program Manager Jerry McIntosh, who brings more than 20 years of expertise in the documentary field as a Director and Executive Producer for CBC Television and CBC Newsworld. Multiaward winning and Oscar-nominated documentary director, Larry Weinstein serves as Senior Mentor for the program. Full criteria and application details can be found at A link to the questionnaire in English can be found at and the $500 Best Mountain Culture Film Award. Applicants must choose only one category in which to compete. The $15,000 Borsos Award for Best New Canadian Feature Film presented by the Director s Guild of Canada, British Columbia District Council (DGC BC) is the largest cash prize for a Canadian film in Western Canada. The award is named for legendary Canadian filmmaker Phillip Borsos, best known for his film The Grey Fox, and recognizes films, which embody the spirit of independent filmmaking in Canada. Borsos Award competition entries must be Canadian dramatic features receiving their B.C. premiere at the Festival. Priority will be given to entries receiving their Canadian or World premieres at the Festival. The Borsos Award competition filmmakers will also receive special access to industry programs and senior industry delegates at the Whistler Filmmaker Forum. Whistler Film Festival Makes the Call The Whistler Film Festival (WFFS) is seeking submissions for its eighth annual edition, which runs from December 4 to 7, Canadian and International filmmakers are invited to submit by the following deadlines: July 4 for early film submissions (discount on application); July 18 for short films; and August 15 for feature films. Every year the quality of submissions we receive increases exponentially, says Bill Evans, Whistler Film Festival Director of Programming. We are looking forward to presenting the work of some very talented filmmakers in our competitions, especially in the Borsos Competition for Best New Canadian Film. Filmmakers are invited to submit films of all lengths and genres including drama, documentary, mountain culture and animated films. The Whistler Film Festival is a competitive festival with five distinct awards: the $15,000 Borsos Award for Best New Canadian Feature, the Audience Award for Best Feature, the $5,000 Best Documentary Award, the $1,000 Best Short Film Award, 35mm/16mm Services HD/SD Telecine and Editorial Digital Intermediates Laboratory Evans: Laboratory Carlaw: Postproduction: CSC News - May
WFFS offers two main programs for the international community to discover Canadian filmmakers and do business with the Canadian film industry: the Whistler Film Festival presented by American Express (December 4-7, 2008), and the Whistler Filmmaker Forum, Western Canada s premier industry event (December 3-6, 2008). For more information, visit Gross Named Chair at NSI Canadian writer, director, producer and actor Paul Gross has been named Honorary Chair, National Screen Institute Canada (NSI), providing training for Canadian writers, directors and producers working in film and television. Gross says he will share his expertise, experience and passion for the Canadian film and television industry with NSI participants. I m proud to be living and working in Canada so it s a natural fit to support such a great national training school, he said. In my career I have been fortunate to have mentors to guide me along the way, colleagues to teach me great lessons and investors who believed in me. Working with NSI allows me to give something back to the industry. While Canadian audiences are familiar with Gross well-known roles of Constable Benton Fraser on Due South and more recently as Geoffrey Tenant in Slings & Arrows and Tom McLaughlin in the miniseries H2O and The Trojan Horse, he has extensive experience behind the film and television lenses as a writer/co-writer (Due South, Men with Brooms, H2O), director (Men with Brooms) and producer (Due South, The Trojan Horse). His latest film, Passchendaele, opens later this year and he combines all three areas, plus the lead acting role. Working on the film with Gross as DOP was Gregory D. Middleton csc. Paul has enjoyed a lengthy and diverse career, and has chosen to remain in Canada throughout it. He brings a distinct perspective having been both in front of and behind the lens, said Susan Millican, CEO of NSI. Many people know him as an actor, but Paul is also an accomplished writer, director and producer. We first had the privilege of introducing Paul to NSI during the screening of his film Men with Brooms at NSI FilmExchange Canadian A TRULY OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHER EXPERIENCE... Cine Gear Expo Moving Cine Gear Expo 2008 will be held in its new location at the Universal Studios Backlot in Universal City, CA, June 20-21, More than 200 companies participate, introducing new technology, new equipment and products to the entertainment community, organizers describe. Over 8000 participants from the film, video, digital media, broadcast and Internet industries will participate in three distinct yet related events: Cine Gear Expo and Premier Seminars, Master Class Seminars and The Film Series Competition. This landmark exhibition will bring together representatives in the areas of Film, Video, High Definition, Electronic Cinematography and Digital Cinema. The Premier Seminars will be offered at the Expo, free of charge to attendees and will run both days of the show. The Master Class Seminar Series is held on Sunday June 22, 2008 at several local Hollywood Facilities. Hosted by top industry professionals and leaders, these nominally priced Master Classes provide informative and educational seminars and lectures on current industry trends and topics. Cine Gear Expo is also hosting the second annual Film Series Independent and Student Film competition, comprised of screenings of films based on their illumination of the visual art forms in filmmaking, such as cinematography, art design, set and costume design, and will feature a Student Short Film Competition, the Independent Short Film Competition, and the new Independent Feature Film Competition. The winner in each category will receive one of the three Production Prize Packages. The visual art forms of filmmaking are as integral to a film as the script, direction and performances. We feel that it is a natural evolution for Cine Gear Expo to introduce a Film Series and Film Competition to honor these artisans and technicians, explains Karl Kresser, President of Cine Gear Expo. We are receiving a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and support from the industry and are thrilled to have The Film Series as a permanent part of Cine Gear Expo CSC News - May 2008

When I was growing up in Venice, Italy, I was mesmerized by a television series I saw about Leonardo da Vinci. Without realizing it then, I was inspired by his balance between curiosity about the technical, rational world, and his quest for higher artistic meaning. Cinematographers often have a certain sense of introspective appreciation about things that is brought out through technical means. It s not just about where to place the light, but how it feels and why. Dramatic storytelling comes with a discipline. The art of storytelling doesn t change when you jump to a new platform. At times, it seems like the technology is telling us the way to express ourselves as opposed to us expressing ourselves through the technology. With film, there is a light, a lens and a chemical reaction. There is something holistic about film. It creates a sense of possibility. Norayr Kasper, CSC studied architecture, videography and photography. He emigrated to Montreal in 1987 and studied filmmaking at Concordia University. His first narrative film was Calendar. His credits include the television projects The Last Debate, Trudeau, The Death and Life of Nancy Eaton, Last Exit, St. Urbain s Horseman, and Race to Mars, and feature films Walk All Over Me, Two Thousand and None, The Life Before This, and Time of the Wolf. His work has earned him both CSC and Gemini Awards nominations. To read the full transcript of Norayr s interview visit us online at To order KODAK Motion Picture Film, call (800) 621 -FILM (3456).
