1 Diversity Events at Auburn October 3 rd Francophone Film Festival Opening Feature-Poto Mitan This event, part of the Global Citizen Project sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts Civic and Community Engagement Initiative, comprises a screening and discussion of the film, Poto Mitan, a documentary which offers a rare glimpse into Haitian women struggling to understand their complex condition and what they are doing for themselves. Time: 5:00 PM-8:00 PM 4 th Domestic Violence Awareness-The Silent Witness Roll Candelight Vigil This event is sponsored by Women s Initiatives. Location: Cater Hall Lawn Time: 7:30 PM 5 th The Tournees Film Festival-Des Dieux et Hommes The Tournees Film Festival is a program of Face, a partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, which aims to bring contemporary French Cinema to campuses of American universities. The program distributes close to $200,000 in grants annually to encourage schools to begin their own self-sustaining French film festivals. This is Auburn s first participation in the program, thanks to the College of Liberal Arts Community and Civic Engagement Initiative. 6 th Jennifer Trevino presents Struggles and Hardships-Dedication and Commitment: Alabama Women s Experiences During the Civil War This event is part of a lecture series sponsored by the Caroline Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities. Location: Special Collections and Archives Department of RBD Time: 3:00 PM 6 th Because When God is too Busy, Monologue by Dr. Gina Ulysse How did Haiti--the enfant terrible of the Americas become the bête noire of the region? This dramatic monologue by Gina Ulysse considers the complex ways the past occupies the present. Ulysse weaves history, personal narrative, theory and statistics in spoken

2 word with Vodou chants to reflect and deconstruct childhood memories, social (in)justice, spirituality, and the incessant dehumanization of Haitians. She offers critical musings on geopolitics along with dispatches from various individuals she has encountered during the last year in post-quake Haiti. Location: Telfair Peet Theatre Time: 7:30 PM 7 th Why Feminist Analysis Matters to Haiti Now More Than Ever, Dr. Gina Ulysses Dr. Gina Ulysses was born in Petitionville, Haiti. Trained as an anthropologist, she is also a poet/performer and multimedia artist. Haiti is the main focus of her work. This event is co-sponsored by Women s Studies and Auburn Connects! Location: Langdon Hall 101 Time: 3:00 PM-5:00 PM ; Contact devrijc@auburn.edu for more info 10 th Italian Film Festival-Happy Family To celebrate National Italian American Heritage Month, the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University will offer three days of new Italian films and special musical and language performances by our students in Italian and music. The festival will be opened by the honorable Consul of Italy Marco Rocca. The first film being screened is G. Salvatores Happy Family. Time: 5:00 PM 11 th Italian Film Festival-Dieci Inverni In continuation of the Italian Film Festival, a screening of V. Mieli s Happy Family will be held. There will also be a pasta bar at Ariccia. Time: 5:00 PM admission to film 12 th Would the World be Better Governed if Women Were Equal Partners in the Decision-Making Process? Speaker Celine Hervieux-Payette The honorable Celine Harvieux-Payette, a member of the Senate of Canada, will be the guest of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and speaking on gender equality. 3 12 th Italian Film Festival-Il Figlio Piu Piccolo In continuation of the Italian Film Festival, a screening of Pupi Avati s film Il Fuglio Piu Piccolo will be held in celebration of Italian American Heritage Month. Time: 5:00 PM-8:00 PM 12 th Multicultural Center Watch and Learn Series-Poetic License The Multicultural Center presents this documentary, directed by Mario Van Peebles, that considers what happens when corporations trademark common phrases and how the First Amendment protects the right to parody. Location: AU Student Center 2222 Time: 11:45 AM 13 th Extraordinary Women Lecture Series-Marie Wilson As part of the Extraordinary Women Lecture Series, Marie Wilson, founder of the White House Project, will speak. A reception and book signing will follow.
