3 Ieva Norvele Shut up! Short synopsis Documentary tells about a person turned into an animal in a parliament session, at the same time being the most human when alone surrounded by animals. Portrait of spokes person, nature lover, poet, politician, family member, human and animal Ingmārs Līdaka. Tagline Politics can smother even the loudest scream of soul, the most insistent feelings, break the strongest man, when the patience and powers are over if enough is enough.

As young man studying in Riga, wrote poems, some published in newspapers.

4 Ieva Norvele Shut up! 4 Main character Ingmārs Līdaka is well known figure in Latvia. From early childhood growing up in countryside of Southern Latvia loved to spend time alone in woods, climbing trees and watching animals, keeping diary about his observations. As young man studying in Riga, wrote poems, some published in newspapers. As young, perspective and active biology student started to work in Riga National Zoo and made his way there as main spokes person. With his charisma and irresistible charm promoted Zoo and attracted many visitors as well as became well known. He started his carrier in National television, making TV shows about nature watched by many children and families. As well worked in Vides Filmu Studija with many projects. He participated in party called Zaļo un Zemnieku Savienība ( Union of green activists and farmers) and was elected in parliament of Latvia, where he works now. In public now he s known mainly for his extraordinary, bushy moustache, charisma and sense of humor. Until these days 4

5 Ieva Norvele Shut up! 5 Synopsis Politics can smother even the loudest scream of soul, the most insistent feelings, break the strongest man, when the patience and powers are over if enough is enough. Although working for good of people politics break the last bits of human in human. Documentary will explore politician under pressure. About person being most human in the world of animals, and most animalistic surrounded by humans. Day in the parliament of Latvia. A proposal from left wing party side is put in day schedule for consideration: to repeal national commemoration as public holydays, because of large number of other public holydays. A politician Mr. Ingmārs Līdaka mounts the tribune and oppose to this proposal. While giving the speech, other parliament member voices are addressing him from left wing side. For public it s barely heard. Mr. Līdaka looses his temper and answers rudely screaming: Shut your mouth! and continues his unfinished speech. I intend to start documentary with a ring tone of a teenagers mobile phone I. Līdaka screaming from tribune: Shut your mouth! This is followed by a t-shirt with Līdakas picture in the famous moment. A mug with the same picture. A remix of a song with this famous sentence is playing. Reedited videos from Youtube with politicians talking and Līdaka screaming on them: Shut your mouth! After it documentary shows the video material from the debates from the famous day and the actual situation in the parliament. Mr. Līdaka sits alone quietly in the woods. Long and silent not moving. He is shooting a documentary about birds. I predict Ingmārs going by car far, far away to a distant part of Latvia. On trips like this he meets old man living in poor house away from cities and civilization. They usually spend day together. Walk through the woods. They look for bird nests or rare animals. They talk lot about nature around. Insert with some video material from Līdakas documentary films and television nature shows. I intend also filming Mr. Līdaka with his family two children (girl and her younger brother) and a wife to their country house. It s an old, modest 5

6 Ieva Norvele Shut up! 6 house where his mother and father live and he grew up. In household there are two cows, one pig, some cats and a dog. With children Ingmārs is also fun teasing them using his unique and admirable sense of humor as well as with his parents. He has beautiful relationship with his wife. When their out in the countryside they act as a teenage couple. I would like also Ingmārs present his poetry to camera. He keeps all his poems in his countryside, so it could happen in countryside location. Video material showing Ingmārs Līdaka in television, newspapers, magazines and in the end in the parliament session ending with his famous sentence: Shut your mouth! It s all shown on background of voice over of Ingmārs reading his poem. Documentary will focus on confronting human and animal, silence of nature and loudness of city, beauty of countryside and rudeness of city life, mass media production and poems. 6

7 Ieva Norvele Shut up! 7 Aims and goals: Directors intention Documentary is based on contrasts. Its main goal is to show the two conflicting sides within a person - rude animalism side coexisting with gentle, peaceful poet. The main theme throughout whole documentary is animal. In all means of the term animal the cruel, unchallengeable laws of nature as well as pure beauty of wilderness. The theme should express the directors personal, subjective vision of world. With this meaning the animal serves to represent the animalistic humanity as more human kind tries to find its way to climb higher on the stairs of evolution as lower it falls on the same stairs from the point it already stands on. Through this portrait/example of Ingmārs Līdaka a statement about our society has to be made. In order to do that a statement about Ingmārs him self should be avoided. This can be achieved by shoving the pleasant, peaceful and charismatic parts of his personality as well as the rude, brutal behavior in parliament; without taking sides or sympathizing with one of them. To achieve conceptual goals in practical matters documentary mostly will be made in still, long shots from tripod with deep focus in order to concentrate on whole picture the person within the environment not the person as such. To stress it picture should look sharp every detail should be seen. Important is to make difference between shots in the city and those in forest and countryside the ones in the city should have dynamics inside them (meaning movement) in contrast with the nature shots where only movement is made by a bird time by time. Also Ingmārs acts differently depending in which environment he s in: constantly moving in the city; completely still when looking through the eye of camera in the forest. Camera shouldn t go close to the main character and as fewer close-ups as better. Sound has big importance in showing the contrast. The famous phrase must repeat on and on and then slowly blend into sounds of nature which later fade into voiceover with poem which melts into the chaotic, disturbing noise of politicians mumbling in parliament. 7

16 Ieva Norvele Shut up! 6 Target audience As this documentary is intended as a statement and comment of society of today s situation in Latvia it should be reached by Latvians as well as Latvia s Russian minority which has strong political power as well as very much heated-up aggression towards the system. As at the same time this documentary reaches for artistic expressions and input, so it should reach an audience who are actively following art scene of Latvia and as these kind of audiences in Latvia usually are avoiding political subjects it might be interesting for them. And surely this documentary might attract active politically interested and involved people. As it is much about how the scene looks like in eastern post-sovietic countries with inexperienced new democracies this might be interesting for more experienced and richer western European countries. Distribution Documentary will be screened on Latvia Independent Television (LNT). As intention is not to make any kind of connections with political parties with this project not to loose its meaning, it will be rather sent to festivals to attract other distributors. Depending on success on festivals might organize a screening just for sales agents to make contract that way to find distributors through them. 6
