THE MOVIES 8/22 DIE LIEBE DER JEANNE NEY / THE LOVE OF JEANNE NEY 1927 Director: Georg Wilhelm Pabst Production: Ufa Screenplay: Ilya Ehrenburg, Ladislaus Vajda Cinematography: Fritz Arno Wagner, Walter Robert Lach Cast: Édith Jéhanne, Brigitte Helm, Hertha von Walther, Uno Henning, Fritz Rasp, Adolf Edgar Licho, Eugen Jensen, Hans Járay Length: 106 min The Love of Jeanne Ney, based on the novel by Ilya Ehrenburg, tells the Odyssey of a young woman in the aftermath of the Russian October Revolution of 1917: When the Red Army occupies the Crimea, Jeanne s father, a French journalist and White Guards sympathizer, is murdered. With the help of Andreas, a Bolshevik she has fallen in love with, Jeanne manages to escape to Paris, where she finds refuge with her uncle, and starts working in his detective office. Andreas manages to travel to Paris as a communist agent and meet Jeanne again. Their happiness proves short-lived... A combination political thriller/melodrama, The Love of Jeanne Ney explores the shock waves sent through the European continent by Russia s October Revolution, which erupted 100 years ago in UFA Film Nights present the premiere of the digitally reconstructed version of The Love of Jeanne Ney. The ZDF / ARTE film department commissioned the reconstruction of the music. The opening night will be broadcast live on Music: WDR Funkhausorchester conducted by Frank Strobel with a reconstructed orchestral score, arranged by Bernd Thewes (by ZDF / ARTE)
8/23 DER LETZTE MANN / THE LAST LAUGH 1924 Director: Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Production: Ufa Screenplay: Carl Mayer Cinematography: Karl Freund Producer: Erich Pommer Cast: Emil Jannings, Maly Delschaft, Max Hiller, Emilie Kurz, Hans Unterkircher, Olaf Storm, Hermann Vallentin, Georg John, Emmy Wyda Length: 90 min One day you are preeminent, respected by all...a minister, a general, maybe even a prince. But, what will you be tomorrow?! viewers are asked in the opening scene of The Last Laugh. In The Last Laugh, Murnau delivers a timeless parable on the ups and downs of life and the importance of status symbols. The film tells the story of an aging porter. Each evening after work, the porter, dressed in his splendid uniform, struts home to the working-class district, where he is much admired by all. But from one day to the next, he loses the job that filled him with so much pride. The old porter is demoted to lavatory attendant; now the laughing-stock of his neighbors, and cast out by his relatives, the old man retreats to the basement. But they will see who has the last laugh thanks to the fortune left to him by a wealthy customer, the toilet man becomes a courted hotel guest. Emil Jannings, possibly the greatest actor of his time, gives a brilliant portrayal of a man who loses his reputation and dignity with the loss of his porter s uniform symbolizing the social decline of millions of people during the economic crisis. The Last Laugh also made cinematic history for its use of a new camera technique, the unfettered camera Karl Freund used here for the first time. Music: Deutsche Oper Berlin s UFA Brass conducted by Manfred Honetschläger, based on a new original composition by Manfred Honetschläger
8/24 METROPOLIS 1925/1926 Director: Fritz Lang Production: Ufa Screenplay: Thea von Harbou, Fritz Lang Cinematography: Karl Freund, Günther Rittau Stage sets: Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut, Karl Vollbrecht Producer: Erich Pommer Cast: Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Fröhlich, Rudolf Klein- Rogge, Fritz Rasp, Heinrich George, Theodor Loos Length: 148 min High above the megacity of a not-too-distant future, industrialist Joh Fredersen reigns while faceless masses toil deep underground. Among them the girl Maria, who one day finds her way into the "Eternal Gardens" of the Upper City. Fredersen's son Freder sees her and instantly falls in love. He follows Maria into the catacombs of Metropolis, where he sees her in her role as a workers' leader who is revered as a saint. Meanwhile, Rotwang, the inventor, is constructing a steel robot and, at Joh Fredersen s behest, makes it look like Maria. The fake Maria stirs up the workers. They storm the machine room of Metropolis and begin to blindly destroy everything. As the workers city collapses, the houses of the workers and their families are flooded. A catastrophe on an apocalyptic scale threatens to ensue... With a budget exceeding five million Reichsmarks, this movie was Ufa s most expensive production to date, and became its biggest flop in Today the movie is touted as the mother of all sci-fi flicks with impressive, monumental scenery and astonishing special effects. With its mix of urban utopia, social romanticism, medieval alchemy, and trivial mysticism, it also presents a kaleidoscope of virulent ideologies of the Weimar Republic. In 2001, it became the first documentary film ever to be included in UNESCO s Memory of the World program; ten years later, Metropolis again made headlines when 30 minutes of the film that had been thought lost were rediscovered. Music: Exclusively for the UFA Film Nights, Jeff Mills (USA) will for the first time provide the score for the complete, restored 2010 version of "Metropolis"
UFA FILM NIGHTS EXTENDED 8/25 DER MEDICUS / THE PHYSICIAN 2013 Director: Philipp Stölzl Screenplay: Jan Berger, based on the novel by Noah Gordon Producer: Wolf Bauer, Nico Hofmann Production: UFA Cast: Tom Payne, Stellan Skarsgård, Olivier Martinez, Emma Rigby, Elyas M Barek, Fahri Yardim, Makram J. Khoury, Michael Marcus und Ben Kingsley Length: 181 min The Physician tells the story of the orphan Rob Cole (Tom Payne), who travels from medieval England to Isfahan in Persia to study medicine with Ibn Sina (Ben Kingsley), the greatest of all physicians, fueled by a burning desire to help his fellow human beings. Along the way, Rob encounters countless dangers and challenges, is forced to make sacrifices, and has to struggle unconditionally to realize his dream. In the end, his unerring quest for knowledge is rewarded with insights about the world and about himself, with friendship and true love. An epic tale of Orient and Occident, of love and hatred, of science and religion. Commenting on the production, UFA co-ceos Wolf Bauer and Nico Hofmann said: We see The Physician in the tradition of large-scale European productions like The House of the Spirits, The Name of the Rose and Perfume. The book is one of the last mega-sellers of our time that has not yet been made into a film. The basis for a great and emotional adventure movie, it is also a modern-day plea for peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance. In Germany alone, Der Medicus attracted more than 6.6 million moviegoers. Music: Neues Kammerorchester Potsdam, directed by Ud Joffe, based on a score by Ingo Ludwig Frenzel in a revised orchestration by Bernd Wefelmeyer
THE MUSICIANS 8/22 WDR FUNKHAUSORCHESTER Great art and great entertainment the WDR Funkhausorchester Köln combines them at the highest level. Its 50 musicians form the only symphony orchestra in Europe that specializes in the entire spectrum of music entertainment - from classical favorites. world music, and hit movie scores to dubstep. Their repertoire includes opera, operetta, musical and film music as well as symphonic jazz and exciting crossover projects. The WDR Funkhausorchester found a new chief conductor during the 2014/2015 season: the Briton Wayne Marshall. The orchestra is like none other not just because of its wide range of programs and activities, but also because, thanks to fixed broadcasting series, especially on WDR 4, it is heard every week by more people than any other orchestra. At the UFA Film Nights, the WDR Funkhausorchester provides the musical accompaniment to The Love of Jeanne Ney a reconstructed orchestral score arranged by Bernd Thewes with Frank Strobel conducting. The ZDF / ARTE film department commissioned the reconstruction of the music. Since 1995, ARTE has hosted its Stummfilm-Rendezvous series showcasing classics and rarities of international cinematic history. All films are shown in their latest restorations, which provides significant support to film archives in their activities. Another focus is the reconstruction of original film scores from the silent film period. The ZDF/ARTE film department has had more than 15 original music scores restored and performed to date; these reconstructions including Der Rosenkavalier (Richard Strauss, 1926), October (Edmund Meisel, 1928) and Der Student von Prag (Josef Weiß, 1913) are an important contribution to the preservation of the film music culture of the early 20 th century.
8/23 DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN S UFA BRASS Last year, UFA Film Nights visitors were treated to a performance by the Deutsche Oper Berlin s JazzCombo, which provided the musical accompaniment to Ernst Lubitsch's Die Bergkatze ( The Wildcat ) together with Trioglycerin. This year, the formation has been expanded to include members of the brass section of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and will perform as UFA Brass. Under the artistic direction of Manfred Honetschläger, the 19- strong ensemble will play an original composition, also by Honetschläger, to accompany F.W. Murnau s The Last Laugh. The composer/conductor has directed the big band of the Hessian Rundfunk in cross-over programs. His compositions to date include chamber music, a jazz mass, music for stage plays, and cross-over classical projects for formations including the HR Sinfonieorchester, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin s orchestra and Big Band.
8/24 JEFF MILLS In 1987, Jeff Mills began his career as a DJ during his weekly radio show at Detroit s WJBL using the moniker The Wizard. From 1988, he teamed up with Anthony Srock to produce industrial music under the name Final Cut. Shortly afterwards, he and several others founded the record label Underground Resistance, whose releases defined and decisively influenced Detroit Techno. In 1989, Mills also began producing solo recordings. In 1991, he moved to New York and founded his own label, Axis Records. He also produced for the Berlin label Tresor Records and made his home in Berlin at that time. In 2000, he released an electronic version of the soundtrack to Fritz Lang's Metropolis. His passion for sci-fi and classic movies eventually led him to set to music Buster Keaton s The Three Ages" (1923), Woman in the Moon by Fritz Lang, and earlier this year A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès. As a DJ, Jeff Mills is known for his fast, spontaneous mixing styles. He often changes records every minute or so, simply throwing the ones he has used behind him. Mills X-103 Atlantis was included in The Wire's 100 Records That Set The World On Fire (While No One Was Listening). Especially for the UFA Film Nights, Jeff Mills has now set the completed, restored 2010 version of "Metropolis" to music for the first time.
8/25 NEUES KAMMERORCHESTER POTSDAM The Neues Kammerorchester Potsdam is a free orchestral initiative that brings together dedicated musicians under the artistic direction of Ud Joffe. Founded in 2000, the Neues Kammerorchester initially played exclusively for choral projects by the Potsdamer Kantorei and the Oratorienchor Potsdam. In March 2001, the orchestra presented itself for the first time in a symphony concert with Händel, Vivaldi and Beethoven. Since then, the New Chamber Orchestra has won over audiences with a broad program ranging from the Baroque to the 21 st century. The orchestra has successfully participated in film screenings with live orchestral accompaniment on several occasions. The Neues Kammerorchester Potsdam conducted by Ud Joffe will accompany "Der Medicus" with music written for the film by Ingo Ludwig Frenzel, and for which he won the European Composer Songwriter Alliance (ECSA) award at the 2015 Berlinale. Bernd Wefelmeyer has reworked the music for the live orchestral version.

ABOUT THE VENUE Museum Island in the heart of Berlin attracts many visitors from all over the world. Here lies the cradle of today's Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, which display their outstanding collections spanning millennia of art and cultural history in Europe and the Mediterranean region, in this incomparable assembly of buildings. In 1999, UNESCO added Berlin s Museum Island to its list of World Heritage Sites, calling it a unique ensemble of museum buildings, which illustrates the evolution of modern museum design over more than a century. The beginnings of Berlin s Museum Island were closely linked to the early 19 th -century ideals of the Enlightenment and Humanism. Great architects such as Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Friedrich August Stüler played a key role in the architectural design of the Spreeinsel, which is also the historical starting point and the city center of Berlin. To this day, their masterpieces of Classicistic architecture give Museum Island its unmistakable appearance. With the opening of today's Altes Museum in 1830 under Friedrich Wilhelm IV, Museum Island Berlin began its development, into a sanctuary for art and science. The Neues Museum was the next to be built ( ), followed by the (Alte) Nationalgalerie ( ), the Bode-Museum (known as Kaiser Friedrich Museum from ), and the Pergamonmuseum ( ). The Kolonnadenhof forms the central courtyard of Museum Island, surrounded by the buildings of the Neues Museum, the Pergamonmuseum, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Kolonnadengänge (colonnade corridors). The original design of the landscaping dates from The layout and motifs of the historical design have been taken up in the current version and gently modernized. This site, steeped in cultural history, has served as the perfect venue for the UFA Film Nights since 2014.
