3 SUNDAY 4 JUNE 2017 COVER STORY 03 Watch circus at sea on Mediterranean cruises Kate Silver The Washington Post When the MSC Meraviglia is christened June 3 in Le Havre, France receiving a blessing from Italian actress Sophia Loren, no less a group of 15 performers will have already spent more than a month on the docked ship flying through the air, juggling, perfecting acrobatics and, just as important, getting their sea legs on new Mediterranean cruises. As Cirque du Soleil takes its act to sea through a new partnership with MSC Cruises, there s no use rehearsing on solid land. The maiden trip leaves today (June 4) from Marseille to Genoa, Naples and Messina in Italy; Valletta, Malta; and Barcelona. Fares start at $ The seven-day cruise will be a tworing circus of sorts: The 5,700-passenger ship will be the first to host not one but two distinct Cirque du Soleil shows six nights a week in a $22m theatre called the Carousel Lounge, which was designed specifically for aerial feats. Viaggio is the first show; Sonor will not begin until June 18. While the entertainment company has performed on cruises before, these are the first original Cirque du Soleil productions at sea, in the first such venue built specifically for the needs of circus performers. Over the next three years, six more Cirque du Soleil at Sea shows will launch in customdesigned theatres on three sister ships of the Meraviglia, thanks to a long-term partnership between the Montreal-based performing company and MSC Cruises, which is based in Geneva. Creating a cruise show brings up some unconventional theatrical considerations. You have to keep that high level that Cirque offers of acrobatic performance, but you re not on flat unmovable land, said Susan Gaudreau, show director of Cirque du Soleil at Sea. It upped the level for us a little bit. Plus, space on a cruise ship is limited. The intimate Carousel Lounge can accommodate 413 spectators, a fraction of the big-top settings that can seat up to 2,500. The setting called for added creativity. The trapeze wouldn t work because the ceiling is a lower height than what a big top is, Gaudreau said. They had to find other ways to move performers through the air, such as using aerial tracks and creating a carousel that transports them. That wasn t the only challenge. Gaudreau and Marie-Hélène Delage, creative director of Cirque du Soleil at Sea, knew that they were limited to one theatre, one cast and one crew, but they needed to create two unique shows with their own costumes and concepts. We wanted them to be as different as possible, Delage said. Not only in aesthetics but also in the acrobatic performance. That meant they needed to find a range of abilities in anyone they hired, so that they could call on a particular circus talent in the first show say, juggling and then another in the next show say, aerial work to keep the productions distinct and audiences enthralled. If you came to both shows you would not even recognise the same artists; you wouldn t even know it was the same team of designers that created the two shows, Gaudreau said. She said that the shape and size of the venue helped her dream up each show. Viaggio is the tale of a painter following his muse and discovering a world of color and imagination, and Gaudreau was inspired to use the Carousel Lounge s expansive LED screen as a blank canvas to paint his masterpiece. The story of Sonor was inspired by the theatre s immersive sound system, and the narrative about a hunter pursuing his prey is driven by rhythm and music. The sound system was so amazing I was like, Wow, I ve got to do something with sound. That was my main trigger, Gaudreau said. The Carousel Lounge isn t just the stage for the show. By day, the space will be open to passengers, who can drink coffee and gaze out the lounge windows that give way to 180 degrees of horizon views. In the afternoon, the lounge will close so that artists and crew members can rehearse before each 40-minute production. The show packages, for which passengers will pay a surcharge, include either a three-course-meal (at roughly $39 to $43) or cocktail (at about $16 to $19) and are tailored to each production. While audiences shouldn t expect any heavy nautical themes at the shows, Gaudreau says they should look for a wink to the unique setting: We call it a little kudos to life at sea.

8 08 FOOD SUNDAY 4 JUNE 2017 The dinner salad you could eat this summer Bonnie S Benwick The Washington Post Just the look of this salad is enough to make you want to dig right in, isn t it? It features the interplay of warm and cool, roasted and toasted, soft and crisp. There s minimal prep work and one-pan ease for the oven-browned chunks of zucchini and tender yellow-fleshed potatoes. I especially like the mix of different greens: Dandelion greens, mache and basil work well here, but keep the combination of watercress, purslane and butter lettuce in mind for another time. You don t even have to make a dressing drizzles of extra-virgin olive oil and sherry vinegar do the trick. Roasted Zucchini, Potato and Burrata Salad Ingredients 8 ounces burrata cheese (may substitute fresh mozzarella) 2 or 3 medium zucchini (11 to 14 ounces total) 1 pound small Dutch gold or Yukon Gold potatoes 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more as needed 1/4 cup pine nuts About 12 ounces mixed greens, such as watercress or dandelion, plus mache (lamb s lettuce; about 6 cups total) 1/4 cup packed basil leaves 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 4 servings Steps Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Let the burrata come to room temperature. Meanwhile, trim the zucchini, then cut crosswise into 1 1/2-inchlong rounds or half-cylinders. Cut the potatoes into halves or quarters, depending on their size. Place the vegetables on a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the oil and season with the salt and pepper, tossing to coat and making sure the cut sides are facing down. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, until tender. When you turn the zucchini pieces and potatoes over, they should be nicely browned on the cut sides. While they re in the oven, toast the pine nuts in a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat for a few minutes, shaking it to avoid scorching, until they are fragrant and golden brown. Let cool. Arrange the greens on a platter. Tear the basil leaves, letting them fall on the greens. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Add the roasted zucchini and potatoes and toasted pine nuts. Cut or tear the burrata, arranging dollops of the cheese around the platter. Drizzle the salad with the vinegar and the remaining tablespoon of oil. Serve right away. 9 SUNDAY 4 JUNE 2017 FOOD 09 Joe Yonan The Washington Post Ingredients 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion or shallot 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 to 2 lemons) 2 bunches quick-cooking greens (such as beet, chard, kale, mustard or watercress), washed and dried 6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 teaspoons ground sumac 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced Two 15-ounce cans no-saltadded chickpeas, rinsed and drained (or 3 cups cooked chickpeas) 2 to 4 tablespoons warm water, plus more as needed 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more as needed 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon Aleppo pepper or other medium-heat ground chile pepper 1/2 cup feta cheese, sliced, for serving 1/2 cup halved cherry tomatoes, for serving 1/2 cup sliced cucumber, for serving 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro or mint leaves, for serving 4 servings Steps Combine the red onion or shallot and 2 tablespoons of the lemon juice in a small bowl, making sure it is submerged; this will mellow the bite and make the allium easier to digest. Remove the center ribs of the greens with a knife, or use your hands to strip off the leaves. Stack Warm chickpea smash with skillet greens the leaves into short piles and roll up tightly; cut into 2-inch pieces. To make the chickpea smash, heat a 10- or 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Add 4 tablespoons of the oil, tilting the pan to coat. Once the oil shimmers, add the cumin and sumac along with half of the garlic, stirring constantly to prevent burning. Add the chickpeas, stirring to coat with the spices and garlic. Cook until the chickpeas are heated through, about 8 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of the warm water; use a fork or potato masher to coarsely mash the chickpeas. The mixture will be both pasty and textured. If it seems dry, add the remaining warm water. Stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and the black pepper. Taste, and add more salt if needed. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and cover to keep warm. Carefully wipe the skillet clean with a paper towel, then place the pan over medium heat. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil, tilting the pan to coat. Once the oil shimmers, add the remaining garlic, and then add the greens in batches, turning with tongs until coated with the oil. Cook the greens until wilted and tender, 3 to 5 minutes, adding a few tablespoons of water if the mixture seems dry. Season with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon of salt and the Aleppo pepper. Taste, and add more salt if needed. To serve, spread the warm chickpea smash evenly in the center of a large plate or serving platter. Top with the marinated onion or shallot and lemon juice. Arrange the greens around the perimeter. Garnish with the feta, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and cilantro or mint. 10 10 HEALTH SUNDAY 4 JUNE 2017 Late night meals can increase weight & cholesterol levels Eating late at night could cause several health problems including weight gain and increase in insulin and cholesterol levels, show the initial results of an ongoing study. The findings suggest that eating the last meal of the day before 7pm could help you stay in better health. We know from our sleep loss studies that when you re sleep deprived, it negatively affects weight and metabolism in part due to late night eating, but now these early findings, which control for sleep, give a more comprehensive picture of the benefits of eating earlier in the day, said lead author of the ongoing study Namni Goel, Research Associate Professor, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in US. Eating later can promote a negative profile of weight, energy, and hormone markers such as higher glucose and insulin, which are implicated in diabetes, and cholesterol and triglycerides, which are linked with cardiovascular problems and other health conditions, Goel said. The new findings, scheduled to be presented at SLEEP 2017, the 31st annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies LLC (APSS) in Boston, offer experimental evidence on the metabolic consequences of consistent delayed eating compared to daytime eating. In the study, nine healthy weight adults underwent two conditions, one of daytime eating (three meals and two snacks between 8am and 7pm) for eight weeks and another of delayed eating (three meals and two snacks eating from noon to 11pm) for eight weeks. There was a two-week washout period between conditions to make sure there was no carry over effect. The sleep period was held constant, between 11pm to 9am. The team found that when participants ate later, compared to the daytime condition, weight increased. Respiratory quotient the ratio of carbon dioxide produced by the body to oxygen consumed by the body that indicates which macronutrients are being metabolised also rose during the delayed eating condition, indicating later eating led to metabolising fewer lipids and more carbs. The researchers also found that a series of other measures reflecting negative metabolic profiles increased in the delayed condition, including insulin, fasting glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. The researchers also found that eating earlier may help prevent overeating in the evening and at night. Malaria infection may cause bone loss too Malaria infection may result in bone loss as a result of chronic inflammation induced by accumulated by-products in the bone marrow left by the parasite that causes the disease, say researchers. Malaria caused by Plasmodium parasites is a life-threatening infectious disease that kills at least half a million people annually while causing over 200 million new infections. In some cases, complications can quickly develop such as cerebral malaria, respiratory distress and severe anemia, often leading to death. The majority of patients recover from the disease; however, there is increasing evidence to suggest that survivors experience long-term hidden pathologies due to infection that are as yet poorly defined. The new research uses mouse malaria models to show that robust immune activation and invasion of parasite by-products into the bone marrow during and after malaria infection lead to bone loss. Even after a one time malaria infection (it Malaria parasites (green) are killing this red blood cell, but a new study suggests they also damage bone. does not matter if the disease is completely cured or chronic low level infection continues), substantial chronic bone loss occurs, said Cevayir Coban, Professor at Osaka University in Japan and corresponding author of the study. One may think that the infection has been completely cured by anti-malarial treatment, and be feeling fully recovered, however, sustained long-term accumulation of parasite by-products leaves the bone in a state of chronic inflammation, leading to long term bone loss, according to the study published in the journal Science Immunology. We found that Plasmodium products continuously accumulate in the bone marrow niche which turns the bone noticeably black in colour, and results in it being eaten-up by bone resorbing cells known as osteoclasts, eventually disrupting bone homeostasis, first author of the study Michelle Lee from Osaka University said. Although chronic inflammatory conditions are known to facilitate bone disorders, our study -for the first time- shows that malaria can do the same thing, with hallmark signatures left in the bone tissue, a very unique feature of malaria infection, Coban explained.

11 SUNDAY 4 JUNE 2017 BOLLYWOOD 11 I m totally a director s actor: Sridevi Veteran actress Sridevi, who is gearing up for her forthcoming film Mom, says that she is totally a director s actor. I am totally a director s actor. I surrendered totally to my director Ravi Udyawar. I followed his vision. I trusted him and it has been amazing. He did a wonderful job said Sridevi at the trailer launch of the film. Present also were her daughters Jhanvi, Khushi, producer-husband Boney Kapoor, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the entire team of the film Mom. Sridevi will be seen working for the first time with Nawazuddin and Akshaye Khanna. She says working in the film has been a beautiful experience for her. I m working for the first time with a lot of people in this film. It s really wonderful to see Nawazuddin on screen. He is a gifted actor. I m huge admirer of his work. I have so much respect for him as an actor. Akshaye is such a powerful performer, she said. Sridevi also spoke about the script being the most important criteria for her and the script of Mom moved her. Sridevi said: For me the first thing is script. When I heard Mom s script, it really touched me and moved me. I felt really nice about the story. That s the reason I did the movie. The movie is set to release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malyalam. Sridevi says it is difficult to dub in all the languages. The film is being helmed by director Ravi Udyawar and produced by Boney Kapoor, Sunil Manchanda and Zee Studios. Musical maestro A R Rahman has been roped in to do the music for the film. Boney Kapoor says the story of the film is very hard hitting. I sincerely hope that the film reaches a wider audience and they feel the essence of the story. The story is an emotional journey, it is quite hard hitting and very apt for today s time. I hope people like it, Boney said, Boney believes that though people talk about the box office numbers more these days, the utmost concern of a producer is box office success. I think box office always mattered the most in the movie business, nowadays people (common) are more openly talking about it. Having said that, I think when I choose a script to produce a film, I go by conviction, he said. Asked about how casting was important, Boney said: Well, the story is about the emotional journey of a mother. Of course, she (Sridevi) is one of the USP of the film but also I think Akshaye Khanna, Nawazuddin and the rest of the actors of the film also played an equally important role to narrate the story. But most importantly the film has turned out much better than what I had imagined in the beginning. Directed by Ravi Udyawar, Mom is releasing on July 7. Amitabh & Jaya complete 44 years of marital bliss Amitabh Bachchan and his actress-politician wife Jaya Bachchan yesterday completed over four decades of togetherness. The megastar has thanked all his fans and followers, whom he fondly calls his extended family or Ef for all the love and good wishes. June 3, 1973, 44 years of marriage...thank you all for the wishes you send. Grateful and filled with love, Amitabh tweeted. The 74-year-old thespian went down memory lane and shared some details about his marriage. And as I set out from Mangal a rented house of mine in JVPD scheme, 7th Road...in my newly acquired second hand Pontiac Sports, two door, with ma and babuji with me...my driver Nagesh, now passed away, insisting on driving me to an apartment of Jaya s family friend at Malabar Hill, Big B wrote on his blog. He added: On June 3, 1973, a few drops of rain began to fall...our neighbour ran out of their house and excitedly screamed to us... hurry to the wedding, its raining, a good omen. It s been 44 years since. On the acting front, Amitabh currently has two films in his kitty Thugs Of Hindostan and 102 Not Out. Big B will be sharing screen space with superstar Aamir Khan for the very first time in Thugs Of Hindostan. It also features Dangal fame Fatima Sana Shaikh. In 102 Not Out, he will be seen with veteran actor Rishi Kapoor after two decades on the silver screen. Salman Khan won t leave parents for big and luxurious bungalow Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, son of veteran screenwriter Salim Khan and Sushila Charak, says he loves staying close to his parents in his Bandra flat and wont leave them for a luxurious bungalow. Salman alongside his brother Sohail Khan appeared on popular children singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li l Champs Season 6 to promote his forthcoming film Tubelight. On the show, a contestant, named Dhroon Tickoo, asked Salman why he still lives in a flat even when he can afford a bungalow. I love staying at my flat in Bandra over a big, luxurious bungalow because my parents live in the flat above mine. Ever since I was a child I have taken the same left turn or right turn and I would not have it any other way, Salman said in a statement. The entire building is like one big family. When we were little, all the kids of the building would play together in the garden below and sometimes even sleep there. Back then, there weren t different houses, all the houses were treated as our own and we would go into anyone s house to eat food. I still stay in the same flat because I have countless memories attached to that house, he added. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li l Champs Season 6 is aired on Zee TV.

She s still hurt by how Brad s friends seem to dislike her - and she s confided to her own friends that Brad broke her heart, and that she s still angry at him for throwing his family away. The past eight months have been the toughest time of her life, but Angie s finally feeling strong enough to talk about her ordeal, said a source. Bride is scheduled to hit US theatres in February, Pirates of the Caribbean sequel sails to top of box office AFP Disney s Pirates of the Caribbean sequel sailed to the top of the North American box office during the fourday Memorial Day weekend, raking in nearly $78.5m, industry figures showed. Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment in the wildly popular franchise starring Johnny Depp, sunk another major new studio movie Baywatch which came in third place and only managed to bring in a disappointing $23.1m in ticket sales, Exhibitor Relations said. Dead Men Tell No Tales also scored big internationally, collecting $247.8m in ticket sales, with China the top foreign market ($92.3m), Disney said. The $326m earned by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales means that The Walt Disney Studios has now crossed $3bn globally in 2017 to date, with international grosses at $1.903bn and domestic grosses at $1.102bn, it said. Ridley Scott s Alien: Covenant, last week s box-office leader, dropped off sharply to fourth place during the Memorial Day weekend. The Fox film, starring Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and Billy Crudup in the tale of a spaceship landing on a planet that seems idyllic until aliens attack netted $13.4m. In fifth was Everything, Everything, a romantic drama from Warner Bros., at $7.7m. The film tells the story of a young woman (Amandla Stenberg) who is told she must spend her life indoors in a sterile environment due to a genetic disorder, but later learns she may have been deceived. Rounding out the top 10 were: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul ($6.1m) Snatched ($5.1m) King Arthur: Legend of the Sword ($4.3m) The Boss Baby ($2.5m) Beauty and the Beast ($2m) For authenticity, Cars 3 director consulted four Nascar champions American director Brian Fee says he consulted four Nascar champions to get to the authenticity of forthcoming film Cars 3. We looked at athletes in other sports, but really focused on Nascar drivers. They start at such an early age and their lives are centered around driving, Fee said. He added, We even talked to a sports psychologist who explained that many of these drivers don t know anything else. They can t imagine doing anything else. Fee is making his directorial debut with Disney-Pixar s Cars 3, the third part in the Cars franchise. The first one came out in 2006 and the second in The film brings a fantasy world of cars where they are not just metal bodies but talk and feel like humans. It narrates the story of racing car Lighting McQueen, and how he overcomes all the challenges. Fee consulted Nascar veterans, including four-time Nascar champion Jeff Gordon, and Ray Evernham, who served as Gordon s crew chief for three of his championships. The film is slated to release in India on June 16.

13 SUNDAY 4 JUNE 2017 TECHNOLOGY 13 New iphone 8 leaks reveal large display, rear Touch ID Microsoft accidentally releases internal Windows 10 builds and apologises Microsoft has apologised for accidentally releasing builds from some of its internal branches for PC and mobile that were rolled out due to the inadvertent deployment to the engineering system that controls the release of builds to the Windows Insiders. Microsoft was forced to apologise after some confidential and internal Windows 10 builds were leaked and it has now reverted the issue to ensure these development builds do not reach more people, Dona Sarkar, Microsoft s head of its Windows Insiders programme, wrote in a blog post. We apologise for this inconvenience and thank you for being a Windows Insider, Sarkar added, saying Microsoft will not release any new builds this week. The Windows Insider by Microsoft is a programme that allows users who own a valid Windows 10 license to sign up for early builds of the operating system previously only accessible to developers. The term build refers to the process by which source code is converted into a stand-alone form that can be run on a computer. Microsoft said although it has put blocks in place to check the dissemination of the build, a small portion of Windows 10 users still received them. What is worrisome is that Windows 10 testers who installed the mobile build, had their phones into a reboot loop which led the devices to crash. To come out of this problem, testers will have to recover and wipe the device using the Windows Device Recovery Tool. Meanwhile, Windows 10 testers who installed the PC build will have to wait for Microsoft to publish a newer build or roll back using the recovery option in Windows 10 settings. With each passing month, the details on Apple s 2017 iphone are becoming clearer and if the latest leaks are to be believed, this year s device will have an all-display front with fingerprint scanner moved to the back. According to a new revelation by Chinese site iphoneros, the iphone 8 will compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 displays with an elongated 18.5:9 aspect ratio screen. The move makes sense as this aspect ratio allows manufacturers to increase the size of a smartphone display while keeping it narrow enough to hold one-handed and still use the keyboard comfortably. However, for this, the app makers will have to redesign their user interfaces while navigation at the top of the display (like the back button in ios) becomes harder to reach. The handful of images also showed the upcoming iphone 8 with rearplaced Touch ID placed directly below the Apple logo. The placement matches earlier leaked drawings, showing the vertical camera design, camera flash placement, among other design information. As for the legitimacy of these leaks, iphoneros claimed that the pictures that came from a Chinese source have provided correct images in the past and never sent us false information. Google will now pay up to $200,000 for finding bug in Android IANS Days after a malware called Judy hit over 36.5 million Android-based phones, Google has now increased the bounty for finding a bug in Android OS to as much as $2,00,000, a media report has said. According to cyber security firm Check Point, dozens of malicious apps were downloaded between 4.5 million to 18.5 million times from the Play Store. Some of the malware-affected apps have been discovered residing on the online store for several years. Judy is one such case of how an open and free mobile operating system (OS) can be exploited by malicious app developers. Most security flaws we hear about now affect old builds of the OS or require clever social engineering to get the user to weaken device security, technology website extremetech.com reported. The versions of Android being released now are more secure than what Google was putting out years ago and as a result no one has managed to claim Google s largest bug bounties for Android. Hoping to attract more researchers and engineers to the bug bounty programme, the company has increased the rewards to up to $200,000. Google started the bug bounty programme for Android about two years ago in which the security researchers, who demonstrate an exploit, get a cash prize -- the amount of which varies based on the severity of the hack.
