5 A Decade of Change and the Dismantling of Hollywood - Film in the 1960s Cinema in the 1960s reflected a decade of tremendous social changes (Rock n Roll, the civil rights movement, Vietnam war, the first man on the moon in 1969, the peace movement and drug exploration) and transitional cultural values. This was a turbulent decade of monumental changes, tragedies, cultural events, assassinations and deaths, and advancements.

6 The End of an Era - The end of Hollywood dominance and the studio system 1963 was the worst year for US film production in fifty years (there were only 121 feature releases). And the largest number of foreign films released in the US in any one year was in 1964 (there were 361 foreign releases in the US vs. 141 US releases). This was in part to do many "runaway" film productions were being made abroad to save money. Most of the major studios were undergoing financial difficulties, studio-bound contract stars and directors were no more and the rise of multi-national conglomerate companies began to absorb what remained of the old Hollywood Big Five and the Little Three. There were several reasons for this shift: 1. The increasing prevalence of television, increased programming, made for T.V movies and television companies. 2. The demographic movement of people to suburban communities. 3. The major studios divestiture of theater holdings and the creation of Multiplex mall theaters (Stanley H. Durwood) in the ever growing suburban America.

7 In 1960, in part to boost the tourist industry and the lure Hollywood, the Hollywood Chamber of Congress inaugurated the Hollywood Walk of Fame (the bronzed stars set in the sidewalks along sections of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street) Universal Studio started its studio tours that progressed more and more in later years to a type of Hollywood theme park. By the mid 1970 s Hollywood was a shell of its former glory. Although some excellent Hollywood films were made in the 60 s and 70 s, there were other players, foreign and independent that were shaping a new less formulaic film industry. I
