3 ABOUT LA BOITE PRESENTER PACK SINGLE ASIAN FEMALE THEATRE THAT MATTERS La Boite holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of artists and audiences in Brisbane. For more than 90 years La Boite has represented the adventurous and alternative. There has always been a strong focus on the development of new work and artists, and today it is no different. The stories, ideas and voices of our city and country are many and varied and as such La Boite seeks to represent and engage in this beautiful and rich diversity; the diversity of form, ideas, ethnicity and gender of identity. La Boite presents up to five productions annually, and delivers a suite of artist and creative development opportunities including a comprehensive Artist-in- Residence program and La Boite s HWY Festival of diverse new work, as well as a range of Youth & Participation programs for people of all ages and backgrounds. Theatre has the capacity to embrace difference in so many ways. We push the boundaries of form by collaborating with some extraordinary partners to stretch theatrical, physical and musical boundaries. We play with contemporary circus, opera, classical text, the theatrical and extraordinary international talents. 4 PRESENTER PACK SINGLE ASIAN FEMALE ABOUT SINGLE ASIAN FEMALE BIOGRAPHIES SYNOPSIS SINGLE ASIAN FEMALE is an incisive new comedy by award winning Brisbane writer, Michelle Law. It follows the story of two daughters and their rambunctious mum as they all deal with some of life's big questions and explore what it means to be Asian women in Australia. It's a tale of growing up on the Sunshine Coast, and what happens when you just don't quite fit in. A hilarious piece of contemporary realism that might hit just a little too close to home. She is the co-author of the comedy book Sh*t Asian Mothers Say and has had her writing anthologised in books like Best Australian Comedy Writing, Women of Letters and Destroying the Joint. Some of the places she s written for include the Sydney Morning Herald, Frankie magazine, Daily Life and the Griffith Review. She has won an Australian Writers Guild AWGIE award for her screen-writing work, and her films have screened on the ABC as well as at festivals locally and abroad (St Kilda Film Festival, BAPFF, Flickerfest, LA Shorts Fest, INPUT). Some of the television shows she s worked on include The Family Law and Slide. In 2016, she was a recipient of the Queensland Premier s Young Publishers and Writers Award. Previously, she was a runner up in the Qantas SOYA Written Word category. Michelle graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Industries (majoring in Creative Writing) from the Queensland University of Technology, and has also studied at The Second City in Chicago and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York. She is a prolific speaker and has presented at events such as TEDxSouthBank, Sydney Writers Festival and Vivid Festival. Single Asian Female is her debut play. Find out more: michelle-law.com. 4

5 5 PRESENTER PACK SINGLE ASIAN FEMALE CLAIRE CHRISTIAN is a writer, youth arts facilitator and theatre maker. In 2016 she won the Text Publishing Text Prize for her debut Young Adult Novel Beautiful Mess which will be released later this year. In 2013 she was selected as one of the YWCA Queensland s 125 Leading Women. Claire is currently the part-time Youth and Participation Producer at La Boite Theatre Company as well as the Lead Artist on Queensland Theatre s Logan Youth Ensemble project TRACTION, which she has led for three years. Claire was previously the Youth Program Coordinator at Queensland Theatre ( ) and the Youth Arts Director at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba ( ). Claire is a passionate youth arts and community cultural development facilitator who has written, directed, produced and project managed numerous acclaimed projects and productions with adolescents from a variety of different contexts across Australia in the last six years. Her plays Hedonism s Second Album, The Landmine is Me (both with David Burton) and Talking to Brick Walls are available through Playlab. As a playwright Claire has been recognised both nationally and internationally including being shortlisted for the Griffin Theatre Award (2009) and studying at the Royal Court Theatre Young Writers Program (2009). She co-created, co-produced and presented Escape from the Breakup Forest and Bad Friend with her theatre collective Mixtape in 2012 and Claire has over seven years experience in the Education sector as a high school teacher in both Australia and the United Kingdom. In 2013 she completed an Australia Council of the Arts JUMP Mentorship with Windmill Theatre s Artistic Director Rosemary Myers. She has a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing [QUT], a Graduate Diploma in Experiential Arts Therapy [MIECAT] and a Bachelor of Education [Griffith University]. 7 AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT OVERVIEW There are a range of audience engagement opportunities which can be included with the production and can explore both the working method of the artists involved in creating the production as well as the play itself. POST-SHOW Q&A WITH ACTORS These 30min sessions are invaluable for all audiences to engage in the creation of the work and to understand the process of performance. These are free to presenters and can be offered for all performances. It is also possible to arrange to have the director and writer present for Q&A sessions (subject to availability and travel costs). 2. WORKSHOPS La Boite Theatre Company is also offering 2-day acting workshops for Single Asian Female for teens aged 14 and over and adults. These workshops foster the development of performance skills in an exciting, interactive and hands-on environment. Artists can be provided or can train presenting venues to run these workshops themselves. 3. DRAMATURGY WORKSHOPS WITH CLAIRE CHRISTIAN Claire can provide workshops in the intricate and sometimes mysterious art/science of dramaturgy for new writing. This would be useful for students studying writing as part of Drama or the English syllabus. Additional fees apply. 7

For Pearl, a Chinese migrant operating a restaurant, it means sacrifice and struggling to connect with very westernized children. For Zoe, the eldest child, it means approaching a crossroads in her life where she s forced to choose between a career and a family. For Mei, the youngest child, it means being bullied at school and grappling with the desire to assimilate versus cultivating a unique identity. Two sisters at odds with each other and a mother harbouring a secret that threatens to tear her family apart, the is Australian domesticity like you ve never seen it before. Act 1 60 minutes Act 2 60 minutes MINIMUM TIMELINE: Pre-rig prior to arrival of touring party + 2 day install/rehearsal period. (1 performance on evening of Day 2) MINIMUM STAGE DIMENSIONS: Thrust Configuration Proscenium opening minimum 10m wide Setting line to rear wall minimum 11m Floor to grid minimum height 5m LA BOITE TOURING PARTY (3): 1 x Stage Manager 1 x Head Technician 1 x Mechanist/Assistant Stage Manager SET/SEATING: For reference, please see attached a generic set plan. Venue specific set plan will be provided no less than 8 weeks prior to arrival of touring party. The set consists of a raised platform constructed from stock staging pieces on which scenic flats are secured. Access to the platform is provided via scenic treads which form part of the main set. The platform is dressed with furniture items identifying both areas as bedrooms. A single person scissor lift is installed to the set for three cue points in the show. The platform and main stage area is sheeted with scenic painted ply panels. A wardrobe in the set, and a pivoting doorway both provide hidden accesses to the backstage area directly behind the flats. A ply projection screen and a LED neon-style sign are to be flown above the set. In venues where this is not possible an alternative solution may be reached for these elements in consultation with the venue manger. Downstage of the platform, at stage level, the playing area is dressed to look like a suburban Chinese restaurant including: a service counter, dining table with chairs, and bar. There is an arted ply skin that covers the floor of the downstage stage area. This requires screwing into the venue stage floor. Depending on the configuration of the venue, seats may available to audience around additional small dining tables. COSTUME/PROPS: The show tours with all costume and prop items required for the performance. LIGHTING: Pre-rig: All lighting units to be rigged, coloured and patched as per the lighting plan prior to the Company arriving to your venue. Lighting to be focused during Company Bump In. Design: For reference please see attached generic lighting plan. Venue specific lighting plan and associated paperwork will be provided no less than 8weeks prior to arrival of the touring party. Equipment: All fixture substitutions or design modifications that differ from the provided plan must be approved by La Boite Production Staff. The following is an approximation of fixtures to be supplied by the presenting venue: x Medium-Wide Profiles 32 x 1.2k Fresnels 10 x Par 64 WFL (or similar) Approx. 108 dimmers All gel as per plan provided. 1 x ETC ION console (1024 or greater) La Boite will provide the following specialty lighting fixtures: Lighting showfile (ETC EOS platform). 2 x Moving lights (MAC 350 Entour) or similar.. 1 x 70 mirror ball. 1 x A LED illuminated Single Asian Female sign. 1 x Strobe A number of practical lamps in the set Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling

13 AUDIO: Pre-rig: All in-house audio equipment to set up as per the plan prior to Company arriving at your venue. Set up of touring equipment and tuning of the system to be done during Company bump in. Design: For reference please see attached generic sound plan. Equipment: The following audio system to be supplied by the presenting venue: Coverage of the entire auditorium is required from a balanced stereo pair. Additional spot speakers in the auditorium as per plans. Audio console (must have capacity to receive Midi and have inbuilt reverb) La Boite will tour with the following audio equipment: Mac Book Pro using QLab (for audio and video playback). Motu 828 Audio interface Onstage practical speakers (placed inside the set). Radio mic system VISION: A single Projector (including associated cabling) is toured with the company, focused onto screen contained within the set. Audio and Video Playback is via touring Mac Book Pro using QLab. FLY SYSTEM: A ply projection screen and a LED neon-style sign are to be flown above the set. In venues where this is not possible an alternative solution may be reached for these elements in consultation with the venue manger. MASKING: Black borders and legs: as required by venue-specific set design. COMMUNICATIONS: The following comms system to be supplied by the presenting venue: 4 x talk back headsets (Stage Manager, Head Tech, Assistant Stage Manager, Venue Tech are required for show). During production period additional headsets will be required. A low light stage view monitor for the Stage Manager is required for view of the lift. Audio show relay and a paging system for backstage is required. BACKSTAGE AREAS: To be supplied by the presenting venue: A quick-change area with mirror, table and bluelight is required in the offstage wings. 4 x trestle tables required side of stage for props. Suitable onstage height access is required during the production period. Production desks will be required during the bump in and rehearsals. DRESSING ROOMS/LAUNDRY: To be provided by the presenting venue: Suitable Dressing rooms to accommodate 1 male performer and 5 female performers. (A minimum of 3 dressing rooms required). A production office or additional dressing room for use to be provided. 6 x mobile wardrobe racks required for dressing rooms and off stage quick change area. Exclusive access to a washing machine, a clothes rack/horse, dryer, iron, ironing board, and laundry sink are required. A drying cabinet is highly desirable. GENERAL STORAGE: Additional tour items not in use and road cases may need to be stored in your venue during the season.
