2 Dear Theatre Patrons: Happy New Year, and welcome to the second half of our Season Productions! We kick off our Spring season with Sarah Ruhl s Eurydice, in which director, Ty Hewitt makes his Anchorage directorial debut. We are proud to have Ty as a new member of our Department of Theatre & Dance faculty. Eurydice runs through March 6. April 1-24, in the Harper Studio, is the West Coast Premiere of Stalking the Bogeyman. We are pleased to present this play based on an original story written by Alaska journalist, David Holthouse and adapted by Markus Potter. We have reached across the UAA disciplines with this project incorporating such departments as Theatre & Dance, Psychology, Art, Journalism, Center for Community Engagement and Learning as well as countless community partners. 4 Cast & Crew Biographies Kimberly Allely (Eurydice) is a Legal Studies major and a Theatre minor here at UAA. Kimberly most recently appeared as Ronald Reagan from UAA s 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, Crystal from Mad Myrna s Little Shop of Horrors, and Babe from Anchorage Community Theatre s Crimes of the Heart. Kimberly also acts as member and manager of UAA s improv troupe, The Ad-lib Alchemists. Jake Beauvais (Orpheus) is currently a fourth year theatre major with a performance emphasis at UAA. Most recently he was in UAA s production of 44 Plays for 44 Presidents as Washington and Jackson. He has also performed in ACT s production of Bus Stop as Bo Decker. Jake is also a founding member of the university s resident improv troupe, The Ad-lib Alchemists. Todd Sherman (Father) is an Assistant Municipal Attorney with the Municipality of Anchorage and an Air Force veteran. This is not only his first UAA theater production; it is his first college production ever. He has been active in local theater since 2009, appearing in more than 15 productions in theaters around town. Most recently he appeared as Ben Weatherstaff in Secret Garden at ACT. Stalking the Bogeyman Jacob Mayforth (Nasty-Interesting Man/Child) is a Theatre Major at UAA. He was most recently seen in this year s productions as Axel Fersen in Marie Antoinette, as well as last year s productions as Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Feste in Twelfth Night. His goal is to one day get paid to do what he loves, building and creating on the stage, and he can waste an afternoon faster than anyone when he has spare time. Mark Bautista (Big Stone) is a versatile performer whose interests range from singing opera to musical theatre, and everything in between including circus arts, theatre, and dance. Mark was last seen on the UAA stage as Song Liling in M. Butterfly, and Lucas in Bare: A Pop Opera. He has also performed with UAA Opera Ensemble and University Singers. Mark has also performed in the community with Cyrano s Theatre Company, AK Fire Circus, Pulse Dance Company, Out North, Theatre Artists United, and Anchorage Opera -- as well as performing solo recitals around the Alaska. When he s not performing, Mark teaches voice, piano, and musical theatre performance at Anchorage Music and Dance Center. He has also worked as a musical director, choreographer, and vocal coach for Anchorage Theatre of Youth. Adapted by Markus Potter & David Holthouse April 1-24, 2016 Harper Studio Additional writing by Shane Zeigler, Shane Stokes & Santino Fontana Lisa-Marie Castro (Little Stone)is a senior Theatre major and German minor here at UAA. She recently played the role of the Dauphin in Marie Antoinette and was also the Comrade Chin in M. Butterfly. Lisa-Marie s theatre costume designs at UAA include Twelfth Night and 44 Plays for 44 Presidents and a dance piece titled Simple Pleasures in New Dances Last summer, she worked at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse in Montana as a costume technician and designed the musical Footloose. Angela Colavecchio (Loud Stone) is a first year Theatre and Journalism/ Communications major at UAA. She previously appeared as Demon in Demon of Darby Castle and Jackie in Cheaper by the Dozen, both at Bartlett High School. Her first UAA production was 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, playing numerous roles such as Harrison Ford and Harry S. Truman. She hopes to one day open a theatre for youth so she can share her passion for acting with young people. Jordan Crenshaw (Stage Manager) is a Sophomore Theatre Major at UAA. He is the treasurer for the Wolfpack Theatre Club and has appeared as multiple presidents, including Clinton and Obama in 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, Tragedian in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and as a soldier in William Shakespeare s Land of the Dead. He was also the sound board operator for Twelfth Night and most recently the assistant stage manager for Marie Antoinette. Meghan Stanford (Assistant Stage Manager) ) is a Sophomore Theatre Major on exchange from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. She was the assistant technical for the University of Wisconsin s production of Marriage of Figaro and In the Next Room, The Vibrator Play. She has also assistant stage managed You Can t Take it With You. She would like to pursue a career in technical Theatre, focusing on lighting design. Josh Evans (Assistant Director/ Dramaturg) is a Senior Theatre Major here at UAA. He is originally from Salt Lake City, Utah and is currently the president of the Wolfpack Theatre Club, having been president for the past two years. He has worked on a number of productions for the club, most notably serving as director for the production of Doubt last year. Katie O Loughlin (Sound Designer) is a Theatre Minor with a Technical and Dance emphasis in her Junior year. She has sound designed for the UAA productions of Night of the Iguana and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. She has also participated as a dancer in New Dances 2014, New Dances 2016, and UAA Dance in Performance. She aspires to combine her love for dance with the skills she s gaining as a technical Theatre Major to produce dance concerts. She would like to achieve a Master s Degree and one day teach at a University level.

5 Faculty Biographies Daniel J. Anteau (Production Manager) received a B.A. from the University of Alaska Anchorage and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Champaign- Urbana in Lighting Design. He now serves as department chair, professor in design and technical director for the dance program. Professionally, Daniel s lighting designs have been seen across Alaska & Hawaii, to New York City, and internationally to Africa. For the past 5 summers Daniel served as technical director for Trollwood Performing Arts School in Moorhead, MN. In Hawaii, Daniel continues to stay active as lighting designer working with Manoa Valley Theatre on their January production. Daniel Glen Carlgren (Scenic Designer and Technical Director) is currently the faculty scenic designer, projection designer, and technical director at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He received his BFA from Southern Oregon University in 2001 and his MFA from University of Oregon in Daniel s recent credits include scenic and projection design, and technical direction for 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, Night of the Iguana, SPAMalot, Twelfth Night, and many others. Daniel has also worked on the automation for Julie Taymor s Grendal and Wagner s Ring Cycle for the Los Angeles Opera and Disney s Aladdin at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington. Daniel has worked as a scenery, staging and rigging specialist in the entertainment industry for many years. Ty Hewitt (Director) was born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska, and has worked as an actor, director, teacher and fight choreographer for productions in the Pacific Northwest and around the country. Theatre credits include Profile Theatre s (Portland, OR) Sam Shepard season, playing Vince in Buried Child, the Speaker in Tongues and as a guest lecturer on the nature of violence in Shepard s plays. Other Portland theatre credits include The Scene at Portland Playhouse and On The Table with the Sojourn Theatre. Ty performed in decomposition, a theatre piece which he co-wrote, in Seattle and NYC. New York credits include Opus D Amour at Theatre Lab, Babel Tower with Round Table Ensemble and Orsino in Aquila Theatre s Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center. Ty has a BFA from Southern Oregon University and an MFA from UMKC. Colleen Metzger (Costume Designer) has worked all across the country. She has designed for the Barter Theatre in Virginia, Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, The New London Barn Playhouse in New Hampshire, CATco and The Human Race Theatre Company in Ohio, Riverside Theatre in Iowa, and the Mad Horse Theatre Company in Maine. Colleen has also run wardrobe at the Glimmerglass Opera, worked as costume technician at the Hangar Theatre, Portland Stage Company, and the Chautauqua Opera, and has worked as a crafts artisan for the Santa Fe Opera. Dr. Brian Cook is an assistant professor of theatre at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He received his PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Oregon, and his MA from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and King s College, London. He previously taught at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he headed the directing concentration and directed productions, including Nickel and Dimed, Tartuffe, An Inspector Calls, and The Ash Girl. He previously ran the untitled Theatre Company which toured a short play dealing with interpersonal violence to schools and volunteer organizations, and he has worked at professional theatres in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado, Florida, and the U.K. Nova Cunningham holds a Bachelor of Music degree (with an emphasis in Music Education and Vocal Performance) from Ohio Northern University, and a MFA degree in Theatre (with an emphasis in Musical Theatre) from San Diego State University. She is currently a Term Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance, teaching classes in Acting, Script Analysis, and Community Engagement in the Arts. Nova s theatre career has taken her from New York to the West Coast, performing year-round for over 25 years. She most recently was Producing Artistic Director on the central coast of California. Dr. Jill Flanders- Crosby is a professor and the dance program coordinator in the Department of Theatre and Dance, University of Alaska Anchorage. She holds an Ed.M and Ed.D from Teachers College Columbia University. She has been an active performer and choreographer in Anchorage and at UAA since She choreographed for and performed with Moving Company North, Alaska Contemporary Dance Company and Alaska Dance Theatre. She also appeared as a guest artist with XSIGHT! Performance Group of Chicago and appeared at the Moningside Dance Festival in New York City in She has taught jazz dance classes in Hvavana, Cuba with DanzAbierta. She also taught at the University of Ghana, West Africa. Brian Jeffrey hails from Chicago where he was active in the city s performing arts communities for over twenty years. He has previously served on faculty at Northwestern University Chicago, Columbia College Chicago and University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. As artistic director of XSIGHT! Performance Group for fifteen years his vision of exploring the amalgamation of theater, dance and the visual arts, has been consistently recognized by popular and critical acclaim. Brian created over fifty original multidisciplinary works for XSIGHT! and toured throughout the U.S. as well as Australia, Egypt, Cyprus, The Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Yugoslavia. He has been twice honored with the Chicago Dance Coalition s Ruth Page Award for Outstanding Choreography of the Year.

6 Director s Note I was intrigued by this play because the action of the story deals not as much with the myth of Orpheus descending into the underworld to reclaim his bride from death, but more as the Hero s Journey of a girl on the path from childhood to adulthood. This story deals with a girl making the choices that influence the course of her path, and affirms that actions do indeed have consequences. It is left to each audience member to individually ponder the ancient Greek concept of fate versus that of free will. I see Eurydice posing the question to us: are we capable of (or in control of) transcending the obstacles that will either allow us to transition into adulthood or will we stay forever in our juvenile (unrealized) state? Student Spotlight As you enjoy Sarah Ruhl s Eurydice, pay close attention to the elements of the set design because they tell a story of their own. Senior Theatre student, Josh Evans, made sure of it. The Salt Lake City native spent the Fall Semester researching the historical context and metaphorical connotations of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth for his Senior Honors Thesis. His hope was to help influence the directorial choices in a way that would successfully synthesize theoretical concepts with their practical applications to strengthen the theatrical experience. One particular area of focus for Josh was the role of nature within the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Although not explicitly stated in the play, Eurydice was an oak nymph which may help explain Orpheus deep connection with the natural world. Additionally, the stunning, metal weeping willow you see on stage plays an intricate symbolic role in both the myth and the play. While watching the story unfold, keep a close eye on the use of water as a way of dilineating the living from the dead. Josh will lead a talkback session about his research directly following the performance on Sunday, February 28th.

The department has been a major contributor to the Anchorage Arts community for over a quarter century, and department graduates and current majors can be found participating in nearly every major theatre company throughout the state. Some have started successful companies of their own. The department is viewed as a statewide training center for new talent and as a resource by local performance groups who often ask for assistance in design, lighting, costuming, construction, and dialects. Our acting students also role play for the UAA Nursing program, and local attorneys. Our B.A. in Theatre, as well as the B.A. in Theatre with a Dance Emphasis, are especially suited to the needs of Alaska. Given the great diversity within the state, Alaska s university students have many different reasons for attending. Some students are eager to continue their education elsewhere after graduation, but many want to stay in their home state and contribute locally. As such the department seeks to provide each student with a broad spectrum theatre education so they are prepared to continue down whichever path they choose. To this extent, based on reports the department has received from former students on the success of many theatres in Anchorage and the state who, to a large extent are using talent trained at UAA, the department has been successful in its mission. 9 UAA Theatre & Dance General Policies Accessibility The Mainstage and Harper Studio Theatre are wheelchair accessible. Please let us know when making your ticket purchase if you have any needs that need accommodation, such as hearing or sight impaired, use of a wheelchair, etc. Children Children under five are not permitted no babes in arms. All patrons, including children, must hold a valid ticket to the event. The UAA Department of Theatre & Dance offers a wide range of programming, and age-appropriateness varies. Certain performances may be deemed unsuitable for children. If a guideline is not advertised, the director will be available to advise patrons regarding suitability of a show for minors. Parking Free parking is available Friday/Saturday/Sunday at UAA. There is a large parking lot adjacent to the Fine Arts Building, as well as handicap spaces directly in front of the main entrance. Please use designated spaces only. Refunds There are no refunds on tickets. Tickets may be exchanged PRIOR to the original date with an exchange fee applied. Smoking Policy UAA maintains smoke-free facilities, and smoking is not allowed anywhere on UAA s campus as of Nov. 19, Smoking by actors may be necessary for accurate portrayal of individual characters or the truthful telling of the story and is not intended to be construed as approval or glorification of the behavior of smoking. Late Seating Policy For the convenience of patrons who arrived on time and for the safety of those arriving late, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. For your own safety, we ask you to remain seated until the house lights go up. Seating Limits Due to safety regulations, we are required to limit the number of patrons attending each performance. On occasion, we may have to decline further ticket sales to remain in compliance. To ensure availability for a specific show, please purchase your ticket(s) in advance.
