3 Dear Theatre Patrons: Welcome to our UAA Theatre & Dance season. This year we welcome everyone back onboard. Dr. Edgecombe returns from his sabbatical with a new play about the foremost female architect of the American Southwest, Mary Colter, and Dan Anteau impressed the corporation he worked with on sabbatical so much with his technical wizardry that they invited him to do a light show in the Magic Kingdom. Wow! As for our season here at home we decided that in honor of the upcoming 400th anniversary of Shakespeare s death (2016) we would build a season around Shakespeare, but not entirely of Shakespeare. We start with The Fantasticks, with music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, in the Harper Studio Theatre (directed by David Block). This longest running musical in the world is based in part on Ovid s lovers Pyramus and Thisby (Midsummer Night s Dream). We then move to the Mainstage where we will present Shakespeare s Twelfth Night, or What You Will (directed by our good friend and colleague Steven Hunt) on a Globe Stage reconstruction built right onto our thrust stage, to be followed on that very same stage in the spring by Tom Stoppard s hilarious and thought provoking Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (directed by Dr. David Edgecombe). We then turn the set around to finish the season ending up backstage at the Globe on the opening night of Henry V for Shakespeare s Land of the Dead: A True and Accurate Account of the 1599 Zombie Plague by John Heimbuch (directed by yours truly). Actors, playwrights, lawyers, rivalries, comedy, sword fights, the Queen, and zombies! What more could you want? Whether you love the Bard or not, do not be fooled; there is something here for everyone, including two fantastic Dance concerts! And let me say once again, thank you for your patronage. You are the reason that UAA Theatre & Dance is successful, and we appreciate your continued support. Like us on Facebook. Tell, Tweet, and text your friends, and thank you all for coming this night! Have a great evening! Enjoy! Tom Skore, Chair UAA Department of Theatre & Dance

6 Directors Note Combine Romeo and Juliet, Adam and Eve, and a liberal sprinkling of West Side Story, and you have The Fantasticks! Two of the world s best stories, timeless themes and memorable music; you can t go wrong. That explains why it is the world s longest running musical. A girl. A boy. A tale as old as time itself. They meet. They fall in love. And then... And then. Well... That s what unfolds before you, so I won t ruin it. This show has been a bit of a miracle in many ways. Arranging the cast, the musicians, the designers; none of this happened in the usual way or as planned. Just like real life. But the results have been wonderful, just like The Fantasticks. I hope you will agree. Thank you to Dan Calgren, Dan Anteau and Colleen Metzger for facilitating a group of amazing student designers who have made a vision come to life. Thanks to Tom Skore and the entire Department of Theatre and Dance for the opportunity to come full circle back to my old stomping grounds. And to my cast and crew, and especially Mari and Alicia, without whom this creation would not exist, a very heartfelt thank you and congratulations. Now, join with us as we enter the dreams of two young lovers. A world of innocent romance, adventure, moonlight, a garden, and the friendship between neighbors that could only be brought about by... a wall. Enjoy the show.

10 About UAA Theatre & Dance The UAA Department of Theatre and Dance offers an excellent theatre generalist B.A. degree, as well as a B.A. in Theatre with a Dance Emphasis, a Minor in Theatre, and Minor in Dance. The department has been a major contributor to the Anchorage Arts community for over a quarter century and department graduates and current majors can be found participating in nearly every major theatre company throughout the state. Some have started successful companies of their own. The department is viewed as a statewide training center for new talent and as a resource by local performance groups who often ask for assistance in design, lighting, costuming, construction, and dialects. Our acting students also role play for the UAA Nursing program, and local attorneys. Our B.A. in Theatre, as well as the B.A. in Theatre with a Dance Emphasis, are especially suited to the needs of Alaska. Given the great diversity within the state, Alaska s university students have many different reasons for attending. Some students are eager to continue their education elsewhere after graduation, but many want to stay in their home state and contribute locally. As such the department seeks to provide each student with a broad spectrum theatre education so they are prepared to continue down whichever path they choose. To this extent, based on reports the department has received from former students, and based on the success of many theatres in Anchorage and the state who, to a large extent are using talent trained at UAA, the department has been successful in its mission.
