3 From the President Civil Discourse The story behind our new series Point Taken begins decades ago, with another program WGBH produced for a national audience. Premiering in 1969, The Advocates featured prominent politicians, journalists, lawyers and scholars debating the issues of the day, often with a young Michael Dukakis moderating. Fast forward to three years ago, when I went to Denise Dilanni, senior executive in charge at WGBH s Studio Six, with this challenge: show me what The Advocates would look like in the 1st century. And this month, you ll see that Denise and her team did not disappoint. We came up with something innovative, provocative and definitely fun, Denise says. Point Taken (page 11) is a weekly, half-hour of discussion and debate involving leading journalists, artists, academics, experts and you. When I researched The Advocates, I discovered that thousands of viewers would express their position on a particular issue by sending a postcard to the station, Denise says. That showed that people want to engage; they want to be part of the conversation. Today, snail mail has been replaced by social media, and you ll have the chance to add your voice to the debate on PBS.org, Facebook and Twitter before, during and after each Point Taken. Leading into each episode, The Marist Institute for Public Opinion will conduct surveys to inform the debate, and host Carlos Watson will frame the discussion with a question: Is cheap oil bad for us? for example. The Emmy Award-winning journalist and co-founder/ceo of OZY Media will then use a mix of vetted facts and humor to challenge the views of the yes and no sides, while real-time feedback from the in-studio and at-home audiences is integrated into the broadcast. You will be encouraged to share and reconsider your personal viewpoints. Debate on TV is too often reduced to pundits shouting over each other, expressing extreme, entrenched positions, Denise says. Point Taken will invite Americans to find common ground through informed and thoughtful dialogue. I m sure you ll agree, Point Taken is a worthy successor to The Advocates (which you can watch online at openvault.wgbh.org.) It s a vibrant new forum to passionately and respectfully debate the critical issues facing this country made possible by your generous annual support. The long-running series features lush visuals, quirky characters and ubiquitous red herrings. At the start of Season 11, Barnaby is torn between work and family obligations when the maid of honor at a high-society wedding is murdered just days before his own daughter s nuptials. Midsomer Murders Mon, 4/4 at 8pm on WGBX Island Mystery Detective Jimmie Perez (Douglas Henshall) investigates murders on Scotland s insular and sparsely populated Shetland Islands, where the breathtaking scenery is practically a character itself. The new season tells a single story that unfolds over six episodes. When a young man disappears on a ferry crossing from Aberdeen to Lerwick, DI Perez suspects foul play. This award-winning, film festival favorite answers this question by taking an upbeat, often humorous inside look at San Francisco s effort to eliminate all garbage going to landfills by the year 00. As the people of San Francisco approach the last 0 percent of the city s goal, this quick-moving documentary follows the trail of trash to determine if zero waste can actually be achieved. See how a culture can be transformed, and how a new wealth of industries can emerge. Racing to Zero Tue, 4/6 at 7pm Transformative Change At an infamous prison in California, a warden, a white Mafioso murderer and a black ex-gang member are struggling to bring change to an institution set in its ways. Boston Public Radio Celebrates Anniversary Jim Braude and Margery Eagan began hosting 89.7 s midday program Boston Public Radio three years ago, specializing in smart, long-form interviews with local political leaders and experts in a variety of fields: from foreign affairs to health care and higher education. It didn t take long for the popular duo to attract loyal listeners. They ve transformed BPR into one of the most-listened-to programs on Boston radio, Eric in the Evening Ready for Freddie Freddie Hubbard was one of the most exciting trumpeters of the latter half of the 0th century. Upon his passing in 008, The Los Angeles Times wrote that, from the beginning, Hubbard s playing was characterized by its strength and assurance, its capacity to roam confidently across the trumpet s entire range, and his gift for spontaneous melodic invention. He played on some of the most significant jazz albums of the 1960s, from John Coltrane s Ascension to Herbie Hancock s Maiden Voyage. Join host Eric Jackson to celebrate Hubbard s lengthy career as a leader. Sun, 4/10 at 9pm public and commercial, and have helped increase BPR s audience by 165 percent. Their fresh approach is reflected in their monthly Ask the Governor and Ask the Mayor segments hour-long, in-studio visits with Gov. Charles Baker and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh that are more compelling conversation than press conference. If there s a story in the news that everybody else is doing, Braude says, our goal is to tackle it in a slightly different way, and take it to a slightly different place. 29 99.5 WCRB Hometown Hits on WCRB By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Mananger The WCRB team has put together a lineup this April that captures the excitement of early spring, a season of rebirth and cherished local traditions. If you haven t yet marked your calendar, the Major League Baseball season begins April 4 for the Red Sox, with their home opener scheduled for Monday, April 11. WCRB wants to welcome the team to Fenway Park with Hometown Hits, an entire day of your favorite classical music in recordings featuring Boston s hometown musicians and ensembles: the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, the Boston Pops, Yo-Yo Ma, Eliot Fisk and many, many more. It s a day of music where the hits on WCRB and when the Sox are at bat just keep on coming! One week later on Monday, April 18, Boston will celebrate Patriots Day, which includes the Boston Marathon. To honor the dedication and spirit of the thousands of runners who train all year for this amazing event, WCRB wanted to provide a soundtrack for the day, and we ve come up with a marathon of our own to do just that. Beginning at 10am and continuing until 3pm, WCRB will bring Boston five hours of Beethoven to inspire those who are running and to acknowledge the epic efforts they have made. This month, I d also like to draw some attention to Sunday nights and the wonderful programming we ve got lined up, beginning with Sunday Night at the Opera with host Chris Voss. We re paying tribute to Shakespeare (April marks the 400th anniversary of his death) by playing some of the wonderful operas inspired by his plays. You ll hear great recordings of Bellini s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (April 3), which is a retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story. The following week we lighten the mood with Verdi s glorious Faltstaff (April 10), and then shift to the French with Ambrose Thomas rarely heard, but beautiful Hamlet (April 17). We end the month by returning to the tale of the star-crossed lovers with Gounod s Romeo et Juliette (April 4). The programs also will include arias, songs and excerpts from other Shakespeare-inspired vocal music. WCRB takes its role as the hub of Boston s vibrant music scene seriously, which is why we re again delighted to highlight live performances by local ensembles. Our ongoing series continues April 10 at 7pm with the Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra, Chorus and soloists led by Harry Christophers in a superb performance of Mozart s haunting Requiem. Then on April 4, also at 7pm, join us for a great performance of Dvorak, Schumann, and Brahms trios by the Tetzlaff Trio (Christian Tetzlaff, violin; Tanja Tetzlaff, cello; Lars Vogt, piano), recorded at their Celebrity Series concert at Jordan Hall. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Ali Berlow Joins The Local Food Report By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial Listeners, especially local foodies, are likely to remember Ali Berlow from A Cook s Notebook, a regular feature that aired on WCAI about a decade ago. And recently, her familiar voice has returned to our airwaves as part of The Local Food Report. WCAI is where I got my start in food writing, Berlow says. When I left the station, I went on to work in my community as a food activist, supporting local farmers and learning that small steps can make a big difference. My hands-on experiences have given my storytelling a totally different perspective. Berlow founded Island Grown Initiative, a nonprofit that supports small family farms and farmers on Martha s Vineyard. She also wrote two books and started a magazine, Edible Vineyard, during her time away from WCAI. Ali had never written for radio when she began at WCAI, but she took to it easily, recalls Viki Merrick, associate director of Atlantic Public Media, WCAI s production partner in Wood s Hole, and co-producer, along with Jay Allison, of The Local Food Report. It was fun to see what she would come up with next every subject was a surprise, always related to food, but enhanced with all the flavors of humanity. Elspeth Hay has been at the helm of The Local Food Report. Busy with two young daughters, she was looking to slow down her weekly production for the show just as Berlow was looking to return. Elspeth and Ali have a shared focus, but independent visions and writing voices, and that makes for a great pairing, Merrick says. I think it s a bright addition to the station s vibrant, local lineup. Listen to The Local Food Report Thursday mornings at 8:45am, Thursday afternoons at 5:45pm and Saturday mornings at 9:35am. Listen online at capeandislands.org/topic/local-food-report#stream. For more farm-to-table adventures from Hay, go to diaryofalocavore.com. Learn more about Berlow at aliberlow.com.
