August, 2011 Orchestral Studies Diploma Handbook For students enrolled in the ESM Orchestral Studies Diploma in Strings

INTRODUCTION This Handbook has been prepared as a guide for students enrolled in the Orchestral Studies Diploma in Strings (OSD) of the Eastman School of Music, and contains course requirements, OSD Jury information, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) expectations, and other important information. Other sources of information about degree programs and academic policy include the MM/PRL Handbook, the ESM String Department Handbook, and the ESM Academic Policy Handbook. The proximity, shared traditions, and close working relationship with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Eastman School of Music present an ideal partnership for orchestral studies to prepare musicians for the new demands facing orchestras and orchestral musicians today. The program involves participation in the RPO as performers in select classical subscription concerts (10 weeks per year), and also draws on both the ESM faculty and the RPO musicians and staff to provide a specialized curriculum in professional orchestral studies. In addition, students gain practical experience in orchestra operations and community outreach skills through internships in the RPO administrative offices. BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE ORCHESTRAL STUDIES DIPLOMA a 2-4 semester non-degree diploma program; a minimum of 2 semesters of performance opportunity ("RPO Practicum") in select performances with the RPO; 10 weeks per year of services (4 rehearsals + 2 performances) with the RPO on classical program concerts; OSD participants must also complete requirements in the Orchestral Studies Diploma curriculum, which will include performance in Eastman ensembles, orchestral repertoire classes, an internship in the RPO offices, and a range of courses in the Arts Leadership curriculum.

ORCHESTRAL STUDIES DIPLOMA CURRICULUM RPO Practicum (playing in the RPO for 2 cr. hrs./semester) 4 cr. (ORC 420) RPO Management Internship (for 1 full academic year) 0 cr. (ORC 421) no tuition charge Orchestral Repertoire (2 cr. hr./semester) 4 cr. ALC 232 Win an Orchestral Audition 2 cr. o no tuition charge for ALC course Electives 6 cr. Electives are selected from the Arts Leadership Curriculum offerings and from degree program courses. A minimum of three elective credits must be chosen from the Arts Leadership Curriculum. Electives may vary from half-semester ALC-type seminars to typical 3-credit-hour academic courses. Two credit hours of Chamber Music may count towards the 6-hour total. Total 16 cr. Non-credit requirements: Final Orchestral Studies Jury (mock orchestral audition). Student must have completed at least one semester of Orchestral Repertoire class at the time of this Jury. Attendance and concert review of two RPO concerts is required. Eastman Large Ensembles (orchestra, required for MM/PRL degree) (3-4 concerts/semester, 1 cr. hr./semester) Additional academic policies regarding credit: Credit for courses in which a grade lower than C has been earned will not be counted towards completion of the 16 credit requirement. Credits earned at another institution may not be transferred and applied towards the Orchestral Studies Diploma. Orchestral Studies elective credits received at ESM before admittance to the OSD program may still be applied towards the elective requirement, with the permission of the Graduate Dean and the Orchestral Studies Diploma Coordinator. All graduate students can take ALC courses for free by registering at the ALC 400 level. Graduate students in certain instances may also wish or be required to register for other than the ALC 400 level and pay regular tuition charges. For additional information on this policy and further details on whether or not a course may be used to fulfill diploma or degree requirements, please visit the ALP website at 3

ORCHESTRAL STUDIES JURY The Orchestral Studies Jury is designed to be the final step in preparing for a professional career, and all students in the OSD Program are required to pass it as part of their studies. The Jury will normally take place in February of the student s second year in the program. The student must have completed at least one semester of Orchestral Repertoire Class at the time of the Jury. The student and the appropriate RPO principal player and/or OSD Coordinator will mutually select the repertory. The Jury consists of a mock orchestral audition. The committee will normally consist of the RPO principals and the Coordinator of the Orchestral Studies Diploma, but may also include ESM String Faculty, ESM Orchestral Repertoire Class Instructors, and/or relevant RPO musicians. The Jury committee may ask for any or all of the excerpts on the list in any order. MUSICIANS UNION CONSIDERATIONS An important feature of this program is that all students will be provided the opportunity to perform--for a minimum of one orchestra season--selected Philharmonic series concerts with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. However, at no time will a participating student take the place of an RPO union musician who has secured a job as either a B contract or sub-list player. Students in this program are used strictly in an augmentation role that is above and beyond contract-mandated requirements. In consideration of the above, students in the OSD program are required to join the Rochester Musician's Association Local #66 of the American Federation of Musicians, and remain a member in good standing during the duration of the RPO practicum experience. To join the union, you must call (585) or visit their office at 875 East Main Street, in the Auditorium Theater. The musician s union has kindly waived the initiation fee of $115 ($65 federation, $50 local) for OSD students. All you have to pay are the quarterly dues of $ If you are already a member of a different local, you are not required to join Local #66. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY Professional musicians are subject to fines for tardiness or absenteeism. As performers with the Rochester Philharmonic, OSD students will be held to the same standards of professional ethics as other musicians. Students are expected to pay their fines in a prompt fashion; grades will be withheld at the end of each semester until all fines and union dues are paid. OSD students are expected to have prepared their music thoroughly before each rehearsal week. If inadequacies, musical or otherwise, are identified, the Music Director and/or conductor shall have the authority to remove any OSD student from performances for a particular week or from any remaining RPO experiences. Removal will result, most likely, in loss of any scholarship support from the Eastman School. 4

DRESS CODE MEN: General Guidelines Any suspenders worn when coats are removed must be white. White dinner jackets are to be as white as possible and replaced as necessary. Black dress shoes are to be polished. Winter Dress Formal Black tuxedo pants; black tails coat; white vest or cummerbund; white longsleeved regular dress (no button-down collar) or wing-tip collared shirt; white bow tie; black socks; polished black dress shoes. Slips and camisoles must be worn with skirts and blouses of sheer or see-through fabrics. All pants, long skirts, and long dresses must be full length, at least below the anklebone when standing. Tops must overlap with pants or skirt when playing, and must be more formal than a shirt that is not tucked in. Small black evening purse. RPO AUDITIONS & HIRING LISTS Orchestral Studies Diploma students are encouraged to participate in auditions of the RPO for positions in the core or B Contract and/or hiring lists. However, OSD students individuals are restricted from holding both a Practicum position and a regular RPO position (core or B contract). Offer and acceptance of a core or B contract position 5

shall remove an individual from their Practicum position, but ESM will grant Practicum credit to such an individual. Practicum students may hold positions on RPO hiring lists, however, such positions will not be operational for any services designated to the Practicum. For services outside of the Practicum, including possible run-outs of Practicum-related programs, students will be entitled to all of the rights of their position on the hiring list, but to absolutely no rights above such a position. REHEARSAL SCHEDULE The typical RPO rehearsal schedule for classical subscription concerts is: Tuesday: 9:30 to 12:00 rehearsal 1:30 to 3:30 rehearsal Wednesday: 9:30 to 12:00 rehearsal Thursday: 9:30 to 12:00 rehearsal and 7:30 concert Saturday: 8:00 concert The schedule for this current year is attached at the end of this handbook; please note that rehearsal times will vary. Always check with the Personnel Manager to verify the rehearsal schedule. Practicum participants are required to attend all rehearsals and concerts for a given week. If a rehearsal is missed, the student will not be allowed to participate for the week. For credit to be granted, the only acceptable reasons for absence are illness/injury or death in the family. Notice of any absence must be given to the Personnel Manager prior to rehearsal. Absences will not be permitted for auditions or other professional or personal obligations. Students in the OSD are expected to schedule their courses around rehearsals for both the RPO Practicum and any Eastman ensembles during semesters of participation in either ensemble. The rehearsal schedule for graduate large ensembles (orchestra) is MWF 3:45 pm - 5:45 pm. RPO PARTICIPATION You will participate in ten weeks of Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra classical subscription concerts during the Season (concerts between September 30, 2011 and June 2, 2012), and will attend all rehearsals for these concerts. Please note that the RPO season does not match Eastman s academic year. The concerts scheduled during ESM vacations are listed as not required. A typical (but not exclusive) schedule for a Philharmonic week includes rehearsals on Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. to noon, 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Wednesdays 9:30 a.m. to noon; Thursdays 9:30 a.m. to noon, concert on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Students may be absent only for personal illness, injury, or death in the family. Students will not be excused for personal reasons such as auditions, recitals, classes, etc. Conflicts with exams must be worked out in advance with your professors. All absences must be approved in advance by the RPO Personnel Manager and Kathy Kemp, the OSD Coordinator. As an Orchestral Studies Diploma student, your position with the RPO is guaranteed for one year. OSD students may be invited back for a second year if vacancies arise. 6

RPO INTERNSHIP: Management Experience Course Description for the RPO Internship The RPO Management Internship experience will provide OSD candidates with an understanding of how the administrative staff contributes to the operation of a professional symphony orchestra. Each session will introduce each of the various staff departments Development, Marketing, Media, Patron Services, Production, Education, Library, RPYO, Human Resources, and CEO and Board. The class will meet eight times during the academic year (day and time TBD). Classes will meet from September March, leaving April and May for completion of the final project. The final project/paper will be to design a concert, outreach experience or special event. Using information presented in class, the student will demonstrate how each department contributes to that event from conception to completion.
