1 MTAC OCC NEWSLETTER November 2015 TABLE OF CONTENTS President s Message President s Message 1 2 Branch Meeting Preview 2 3 Calendar 3 4 Certificate of Merit 5 6 Baroque Festival Bach Festival Branch Recitals 10 News & Announcements Member Information Updates - Studio News - Upcoming Saddleback Concerts Greetings to all! It's November so Halloween is behind us and that means that the holiday season has officially begun! And speaking of Halloween, hopefully you registered your CM students by the Oct. 31 deadline. I want to thank those that contributed to a great branch meeting on Oct. 14th at LHCC. Dr. Katya Gliadkovsky gave a very inspiring talk on "Recreational Music Making" and provided us with motivating ideas on ways to approach our teaching and our studios. She talked about maximizing the potential in our studios and shared with us ideas like teaching group lessons. She even teaches entire families in group lessons, students and their parents! Advertisements 13 Also at that meeting was an opportunity to honor our past Editor: Abra West abrakwest@gmail.com president, Pam Worcester. The OCC Board presented her with a beautiful Waterford crystal tray which included the branch logo and her years of service engraved on it. Pam has given much to our branch in many ways, and continues to! With her great ideas and dedicated service, she implemented many things, like forming small committees when things needed to be accomplished. Pam is a great organizer, team leader, and delightful person. We all thank you Pam! Thank you to Jennie Huang, our hospitality chair and her helpers, Diana Chu, Linda Wells Sholik, and Masako Griffin for providing the goodies for our Oct. meeting. You won't want to miss our November branch meeting!!! We are very lucky to have Composer Dr. David Karp do a presentation for us! Our wonderful program chair, Angela Leu has worked hard to arrange this for us! It will be a very special event by Dr. Karp on "Developing Pianistic Skill Through Practicing and Performing". I hope you can join us on Wed., Nov. 11 at LHCC. I want to thank Ana de Vries and Keiko Ikeda for handling the Showcase Recitals on Oct. 25 and Nov. 8. I also want to thank Laura Combs and Angela Leu for chairing our Community Service Recitals (CSR) on Oct. 24 and Nov. 15. Thank you Ladies for your continued dedication to these programs! For more info. on entering your students in these events, please see our branch website or contact these chairpeople directly. MTAC OCC Newsletter, November 2015 Page 1

2 With your upcoming Fall and holiday recitals, I want to remind everyone to save a copy of your recital program for the MTAC connection with ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). The composers who are not in public domain receive a small percentage of payment from ASCAP when their compositions are listed on recital programs. This applies to your own studio's recitals as well as branch recitals. Lillian Cunningham handles this for our branch and has told me that she receives VERY few recital programs from our members each year. Let's change that! You can send your programs to Lillian directly, at: Via Floresta, Lake Forest, 92630, or you can bring them to any branch meeting and I'll get them to Lillian. In doing this, you are helping the composers whose music you enjoy teaching! We have a former member that's been reinstated: Welcome back Karen Pollick! There will be no branch meeting or newsletter for the month of December. Our only branch event in Dec. is the Saddleback College Concerto Competition on Dec. 12. Warm wishes for a blessed and beautiful holiday season! Nancy Lau Branch Meeting Preview Music Teachers Association of California Orange Coast Cities Branch Presents Developing Pianistic Skill Through Practicing and Performing Jazz Compositions with Dr. David Karp Wednesday, November 11, :00 A.M. 5 Certificate of Merit Piano and General Chair Anne Prestridge, String Chair Gloria Liu Traullé, Voice Chair Kathleen Martin, Piano Repertoire Expert Marina Sakach, Teacher Volunteer Work Scheduler Keiko Ikeda, CM Repertoire, Technique, Sightreading and Theory Preparation REPERTOIRE LEVELS: Read carefully and refer often to the appropriate CM level in syllabus to prepare students for technique, sight-reading, theory and memorization requirements. For levels 3-Adv, check to make sure that each composer fits into the correct musical history period. Make sure that your students repertoire is at or above their CM level. One piece must be chosen from their CM level repertoire list. Pieces listed as "not" may not be used for the enrolled CM Level, either as a syllabus piece or as remaining repertoire. Any piece found in an anthology listed on a student s CM level repertoire list can be played except any piece listed NOT. If the piece can be found in an Anthology for the Level and the Anthology does not have a "not" for it, then the piece may be used. Branch CM Committee and CM Council cannot answer each specific repertoire questions. We suggest you save questionable music for a studio recital or other performance. When in doubt, do not use the work for CM. The work may or may not be appropriate for CM evaluations, but it is not worth the risk of getting an IC. PIANO: Composers Categories for Repertoire Selection are listed in Section 6 of Syllabus (p ). Some composers are listed in two different categories. These are transitional composers, and may be used for one of two different categories in Levels 3 and up. You will find more information regarding repertoire on p of New 2012 Piano Syllabus. If you have any repertoire questions, please contact Marina Sakach, marina@innertech.com. CM Database Information CM DATABASE OPENS AGAIN JANUARY 2ND AND CLOSES JANUARY 31ST at 11:59 PM. At that time you will input student s repertoire, apply for Branch Honors and Convention Recitals and indicate any carpooling or evaluation day requests. STUDENT EVALUATION SCHEDULE REQUESTS: Over 850 piano students are scheduled within four full days of evaluations. Please be considerate to all students by only making a day or AM/PM request for necessary reasons, such as a school activity. Let your students and parents know NOW the CM piano evaluation and theory testing dates. Do not request the last weekend of evaluations for your students for the reason of giving them more time to prepare. Anne will contact the teacher first before removing the requests of teachers/students/parents that misuse the evaluation day request privilege. MTAC OCC Newsletter, November 2015 Page 5

6 A NOTE ON HOW THE COMPUTER SCHEDULING PROGRAM WORKS: When a teacher inputs their students repertoire and scheduling information into the mtac.org database and clicks Submit, the database time stamps that entry. Every time a teacher edits the entry and clicks Submit, the time is updated. The scheduling program schedules students in the order that information is submitted. In summary, the earlier you input your student s information, the more chance you have of a scheduling request being filled. STUDENT SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICY: There will be NO changes to the Certificate of Merit Student Evaluation Schedule once it is finalized and posted on the branch website mtacocc.org. There is no guarantee that a scheduling request can be granted. In the case of a medical or family emergency, written documents will need to be submitted to the MTAC:OCC CM Committee via the CM Chair, by the teacher, in addition to a $50 processing fee (must be teacher s check), made payable to MTAC:OCC for each student requesting an emergency-related change. The processing fee and required documents must be submitted for approval before an emergency-related change will be considered. A change is not guaranteed. Branch 2016 Evaluation Dates and More Notify your students and parents of the CM 2016 testing dates NOW. Piano evaluations and piano theory testing will be ON THE SAME WEEKEND (different places), March 12 and 13. Please save that date! We will need a lot of workers that weekend!
