I am very sorry to have missed the last branch meeting, but I had to report for jury duty. I want to thank our wonderful First Vice-President (and former President), Angela Leu, for running the meeting for me on such short notice. We are very lucky to have someone so special like Angela in our branch. Thanks also to Jin Joo Hong for a great YAG performance. I wish I could have heard her mini-recital. March is fast approaching. I trust that you successfully entered your students CM repertoire. Please remember to sign-up for your teacher work schedule. Anne Prestridge will undoubtedly have more CM updates in this newsletter. I am pleased to report that our branch has once again donated $1000 to the MTAC Foundation: $500 to VOCE, $250 to Concerto/Solo, and $250 to Composers Today. I hope you are all proud to be members of such a fantastic and generous branch! Editor: Lisa lwaki arioso.notes@gmaii.com There are many impressive recitals and master classes at Saddleback College this semester. Try to attend some of these events if you can. Check this newsletter and the Spring Concert Brochure for more details: pdf. Craig Richey, a marvelous musician and composer, will be the master teacher at our February branch meeting. There will be three fine young pianists performing in the master class for him. In addition, Keiko Ikeda will show you the beautiful 40th Anniversary Photo Album that she created if you missed it at the January meeting. Baroque Festival envelopes will also be available for pick-up. Hope to see you at our Sunday meeting! ~Pam

5 TIPS FOR TEST PREPARATION Technique: Have your student practice playing through all of their CM level technique without stopping or needing prompts by evaluator. Time your students and have them time themselves. They must play their technique within the time allotted which is stated at every level in the syllabus. Theory: Read the syllabus theory requirements carefully of the level of each of your students. Give your students practice theory tests. Previous years tests can be purchased from mtac.org or by calling the State office. Repertoire: Students can play their pieces in any order. Students can choose to play their technique, sight reading or repertoire first. Also teach students to flexible in case they get an evaluator that tells them what to play first. MTAC String Teachers: NEW THEORY WORKBOOKS AVAILABLE AT COREMUSICTHEORY.COM MTAC member Celine Gietzen (cellist) has written theory books for violin, viola, and cello. Levels Prep to 5 are available now; levels 6-10 and the answer key will be ready by the end of the year. Click here to see what sets them apart: These books are different from anything else available, as they relate the theory to the instrument to get students thinking like musicians. Three practice tests are included in every volume. The books are clearly written and comprehensive. Click here to view sample pages: To be notified when new volumes become available, click on this link: (fill in your information, and then click the Subscribe to list button). What people are saying about the Core Music Theory instrument-based music theory method: Finally, a comprehensive theory method for string students that enhances technique and performance. Dr. Lauren Deutsch, D.M.A., Violinist and Teacher I just don t have time to include all of this material in a private lesson. These books are an invaluable resource for string teachers. Amy Hagen, Music Director, Ojai Youth Symphony It was really helpful to see the terms explained. Now I know what they mean when I see them in my music. Camryn Russon, age 12 The Level 4 book has been a good review. The explanation of intervals helped me finally understand it! Laura Gurney, age 13 MTAC OCC Branch Newsletter, January 2015 Page 8
