Introduction The skills associated with the preparation and perfmance of chamber music are essential f musicians whatever their career destination. This is reflected in the progression through the undergraduate programme, from the establishment of the necessary commitment and discipline by structured coaching and moniting in the earlier stages, through greater expectation that professional wking relationships with peers can be maintained, initiative in fging positive musical relationships demonstrated, and a clear collective interpretative sense communicated in annual perfmance assessments. By the end of undergraduate study, chamber music skills should be at a sophisticated and scholarly level with a strong ability to communicate a shared vision and a professional speed of wking. Tuition is available at all stages of study. F strings and piano students, allocated staff in the first year monit ensembles in recognition of the early stage of individual development. During the four years of study, it is anticipated that although there may be a few ensembles which remain together throughout, there are also likely to be alterations and changes in groups. Students in the latter years are expected to use their initiative to establish an ensemble with which to wk in this imptant area. Coaching is readily available and should be called upon to suppt ensembles in acquiring a wking knowledge of ce repertoire. Suppt with managing chamber music challenges is provided by Department Heads if issues arise which are otherwise unresolvable. 3

Chamber Music Assessments: Strings, Piano, Woodwind, Brass (harp, accdion, guitar, gan, histical perfmance: please see individual departmental requirements) Chamber music is assessed in scheduled examinations in the last week of the Spring Term: A scheduled period of examinations will take place f all Undergraduate students, and also f Undergraduate ensembles that have a minity number of Postgraduate members external members. The annual test will ensure that all students participate in the acquisition of chamber music skills. The design of the assessment is such that the full scale of the activity is not represented, but takes a snapshot sample of wk, which reflects the level of function as an ensemble perfmer of individual students. The perfmance will count as 75% of your overall chamber music mark. Ensembles consisting of BMus 1 students only must prepare minutes of music, which can be a single movement part of a wk. BMus 2, BMus 3 and BMus 4 students must prepare an entire wk ( wks) lasting a minimum of 15 minutes. If the wk is longer than the allocated time of the assessment, the panel will select a movement movements to hear. If a BMus 1 student chooses to be assessed in an ensemble that includes students from other year groups, the ensemble must prepare an entire wk. NB. Each allocated chamber music assessment slot will be 20 minutes, but in the case of BMus 2, BMus 3 and BMus 4 students, this does not reflect how much music must be prepared. Each student must the Strings Administrat with the personnel of their ensemble f the assessment by Friday 29 th January It must not be assumed that one member s covers all of the ensemble s members. A student who plays in me than one ensemble must make himself/herself available f the exams of members of all groups in which he/she plays. Membership of me than two groups is discouraged. Shtage instruments may be exempted from this, but in consultation with the Head of Study only. If your ensemble includes postgraduate students external musicians, it is your responsibility to ensure that they are available during the chamber music assessment period. Applications to the Special Circumstances Committee f deferrals on account of the fact that one of your ensemble is not available will not nmally be accepted. It is imptant that you are committed to your group and prepare f your chamber music assessment with diligence and professionalism. If you pull out of a scheduled group assessment without due notice and good reason thereby letting down the other members of your group, you may be subject to disciplinary proceedings including the imposition of a penalty mark and/ tutial warnings. Although strict repertoire requirements are not made, repertoire offered should be suitable f the level of study. If students have been programmed into a chamber music concert by the Academy, they may be able to use this towards this requirement. If one of these perfmances is to be assessed, they must alert the Concerts and Prizes Administrat well in advance, who will then make sure a member of staff attends the concert as an assess. 4

Chamber Music Profile: all departments The Chamber Music Profile is used as a recd of engagement f all aspects of unconducted small group activity (in the case of strings, wind and brass, this should be three instruments me). There should be clear evidence of close collabation, rational use of coaching resources and perfmance in, and observation of chamber music classes and concerts. These do not necessarily have to be Academy related activities. There is space on the fm to articulate particular challenges encountered in chamber music wk and if the recd of activity appears sparse, this should be completed with care to justify a limited level of participation. The Chamber Music Profile is marked (see marking criteria on page 13) and counts towards 25% of students overall grade received f chamber music. The blank fm will be pigeonholed to every student at the start of the academic year. Students must use this fm to recd every session of chamber music activity (coaching, rehearsals, perfmances etc). The Chamber Music Profile fm should be submitted to the panel at your chamber music assessment in the last week of the spring term. The final deadline f all fms to be submitted is Friday 18 th March 2016 (the last day of the spring term) and they must be given in to the Strings Administrat. The Chamber Music Profile must not only show evidence of the process through which you have arrived at the assessment, but should also demonstrate initiative and activity in chamber music over the first two terms so that it can be credited. Students must recd ALL chamber music activity not just the wk done with the group perfming in the assessment. All sections of the fm must be completed. If you misplace your iginal profile fm, you will need to print out another copy from the Chamber Music Page (see Faculties) on AIR. Professs must sign f coaching sessions where indicated FOR EACH MEMBER OF THE ENSEMBLE. If your fm is received after the deadline, your mark will be capped subject to lateness penalty deductions. If your assessment has been deferred f any reason, you must submit your fm on the day of your assessment. Examples of differing standards of chamber music profiles can be found on the Chamber Music Page on AIR. 5

Departmental Requirements Strings F strings, chamber music is defined as three to eight players unconducted. Duo perfmances are therefe not suitable f inclusion. The chamber music assessments are minutes in length but repertoire requirements vary accding to year of study. BMus 1 (special instructions) Violin/Viola/Cello: First year students will be assigned to groups on arrival at the Academy. To build on the existing chamber music culture and to instil the necessary commitment and discipline at an early stage, these Year 1 ensembles will be expected to perfm a movement of a wk to a panel of professs on Friday 6th November This is a review session and not a fmal assessment to ensure progress is underway from the beginning of the year and to tackle any difficulties arising in personnel. Observations on areas requiring improvement should be noted and ensembles will receive written feedback. Students must remain with these groups f this first eight weeks of study and are encouraged to continue if they are functioning positively. Any indicated changes through incompatibility, the wish to wk with other players, should be expedited in time f all ensembles to prepare f a fmal assessment during the last week of the Spring Term. This assessment may include discussion with the students about rehearsals and coaching undertaken as well as a perfmance demonstrating that the ensemble has developed. The profess with special responsibility f first year strings chamber music in 2015/2016 is David Smith. Students may also consult the the Chamber Music Fellows who have a menting role, and the Head of Strings. The first year exam at the end of term two is f approximately 20 minutes of music and should demonstrate efficient preparation and collabative confidence. BMus 2 (special instructions) Violin/Viola/Cello: At this level ensembles should be able to demonstrate me independent purpose. Chamber music ensembles that have continued from Year 1 and which consist predominantly of Year 2 students will also have an infmal preliminary review in mid February They should have prepared a complete wk and be prepared to perfm from it. A fmal assessment will take place in the last week of the Spring Term. An interview with the ensemble may fm part of this assessment. The repertoire requirement is the same as f the preliminary review but should not nmally be the same piece. BMus 3 and BMus 4 Violin/Viola/Cello: Undergraduate chamber music in the 3 rd and 4 th years of study will be assessed in the last week of the Spring Term. Please see page 3 f specific repertoire requirements. NB: From year 2 onwards, serious quartets have the opptunity to audition f the Davey- Posnanski Quartet Scheme, which offers fast-track coaching, enhanced perfmance opptunities, and dedicated suppt to allow the ensemble to develop an artistic personality with mented guidance at an intensive level. 6

Piano BMus 1 (special instructions): You will have an infmal review in the middle of November, and an assessment at the end of the Spring Term. To build on the existing chamber music culture and to instil the necessary commitment and discipline at an early stage, Year 1 ensembles will be expected to perfm a movement of a wk to chamber music professs and the Head of Department on 20th November This is not a fmal assessment, but an opptunity to ensure progress is underway from the beginning of the year, and to tackle any difficulties. Observations on areas requiring improvement should be noted. If any adjustment is necessary, with playing partners, f example, it can happen straightaway, in time f ensembles to prepare f a fmal assessment during the last week of the Spring Term. This assessment will include discussion with the students about rehearsals and coaching undertaken as well as a perfmance demonstrating that the ensemble has developed. The chamber music requirement f both these assessments f piano students is: ONE perfmance of a substantial equal duo ensemble wk (maximum 20 minutes), ie: a duo sonata f stringed instrument and piano (e.g. Beethoven Brahms) a maj item of Lieder French Song a wk f piano and larger ensemble where the piano has a maj role (e.g. Piano Trio/Quartet) a wk f piano with brass, percussion wind Single movements will be regarded as appropriate in this year of study. 9 Brass Ensembles must consist of three me players. Woodwind Ensembles must consist of three me players, unless otherwise agreed with the Head of Woodwind. Guitar Ensembles (a component of Principal Study): Course elements are: guitar ensemble, mixed ensemble, guitar and voice. Students must present a minimum of three coached public perfmances each year. All three elements must be covered by the end of the four years of the course. The three elements carry equal weighting in assessment. Students must also complete a Chamber Music Profile Fm and hand it in to the Strings Administrat by Friday 18th March 2016 (see page 4 f details). Ensemble Activity Wks chosen under Ensembles/Ensemble Activity should be of a length and difficulty commensurate with the student s year of study. Advice on this should be sought from the Head of Guitar. Marks f Ensemble/Ensemble Activity are awarded on the basis of the best three perfmances if me than the required number are given. Academy lunchtime concerts and Guitar Chamber Music Concerts are regularly assessed. Every efft is made to assess other Academy perfmances (evening concerts etc.), but students are advised to check in advance with the Concert Manager and/ Head of Guitar as to whether not such arrangements are in place. Students may be required to arrange assessment and to ensure that the rept is logged with the Concerts Department by their deadline. Perfmances given outside the Academy may count towards the Ensembles/Ensemble Activity requirement providing that they are assessed by a bona fide representative of the Academy and that this is agreed in advance by the Head of Guitar. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that such representation is arranged and that the rept is sent to Registry by the deadline. Ensemble perfmances must be coached by a member of the Academy s professial staff person approved by the Head of Guitar. Auditions are held each semester to select items f the Guitar chamber concerts. F other concerts students are strongly advised to plan ahead and book slots well in advance. Advice may be sought from the Concert Manager, Head of Guitar and your Tut. Students must present at least one perfmance per semester. There is no guarantee that perfmances presented after the deadline will be assessed towards the course. The deadline f all perfmances to have taken place is Friday 13th May

Harp All undergraduate harp students need to complete one chamber music assessment within the academic year, and no later than Friday 13th May This annual test will ensure that all students participate in the acquisition of chamber music skills. The design of the assessment is such that the full scale of the activity is not represented, but takes a snapshot sample of wk, which reflects the level of function as an ensemble perfmer of individual students. Students may request to be assessed in Academy harp chamber music concerts which will be scheduled throughout the year, it is possible to apply f your own concert by filling out a concert voucher and fixing a date with the Concerts and Prizes Administrat. All Harp chamber music assessments will be minimum 9, maximum 20 minutes in length (75% of your overall chamber music mark). Each student will also be required to complete a Chamber Music Profile and hand it in to the Strings Administrat by Friday 18 th March 2016 (end of the Spring Term). Organ Ensemble Music: A minimum of one ensemble perfmance per year. Repertoire chosen must include wks with other instruments. All perfmances must be completed by Friday 13th May Wks chosen should be of a length and difficulty commensurate with the student s year of study. Advice should be sought from the Head of Organ. No wk presented f solo ensemble music assessment can be presented f Principal Study examinations, either f End of Year assessment, Final Recital. Also you cannot present the same repertoire in subsequent years. Failure to comply with this condition is regarded as self-plagiarism and as such, will attract strict penalties. Marks f ensemble music are awarded on the basis of the best perfmance. All perfmances given within the Academy s Lunchtime (LT) and Early Evening (EE) concert series are automatically assessed and marked f perfmance requirements. Other perfmances given both within and outside the Academy may count towards the perfmance requirements providing they are assessed by a bona fide representative of the Academy and that this is agreed in advance by the Head of Organ and your Tut. It is the student s responsibility to ensure such representation and to ensure that the repts are returned to the Concerts Administrat immediately after the concert has taken place. Ensemble perfmances must be coached at the Academy. Wks assessed f this part of Principal Study requirements must be presented in a public concert. Perfmances given in perfmance classes, lessons, examinations etc are not eligible f credit. 12 Leave of Absence and deferral of assessments The dates of the undergraduate Chamber Music assessment week are published at the start of the academic year and you must make yourself available f the whole of this week until the individual assessments are scheduled. In the event that you need to be away f part of that week, you must firstly notify the members of your group and let the Strings Administrat know. If possible, your assessment may be scheduled around your group s availability, but this cannot be guaranteed. If the assessments have already been scheduled, you will need to apply to the Special Circumstances Committee (SCC) to request a deferral and also f Leave of Absence, see below. You must apply to SCC on behalf of your group and obtain the signatures of all group members in der f the application to be considered. Deferrals will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and if applied f in good time. If you are ill and unable to perfm, you must obtain medical evidence and apply to SCC. Leave of Absence You will need to apply f Leave of Absence if you are going to take any time away from the Academy during the term, regardless of whether not you will miss any Academy activities which are part of your schedule of study. Leave of Absence will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances and must be applied f by filling out a Leave of Absence fm (available on AIR). Some guidance on completing a Leave of absence fm: You must apply f Leave of Absence and obtain all relevant signatures as far in advance as possible. It is your responsibility to check the dates of your assessments and to collect these signatures. Your Tut will notify you via once the process is complete. You may not go on leave until you have received a notification from your Tut. If it is subsequently found that you have missed a timetabled assessment f which the date had been published in advance, but that you have not declared on this fm, then you will be automatically referred (failed) in the relevant component. 12

Coaching Coaching in chamber music requires ensembles at all levels to be well ganised and practical. There are some basic guidelines f coaching: It is your responsibility to make the most of the coaching available at the Academy. When approaching a chamber music coach to request a coaching session, please give a number of alternative times when all the players in your group are definitely available. Respond quickly by phone , when a time is suggested, to confirm the coaching session. Some coaching sessions (e.g. String Quartet Study Days/lessons with Michael Dussek John Reid) can be signed f, on piano strings chamber music noticeboards. DO NOT SIGN UP UNLESS ALL MEMBERS OF THE GROUP HAVE CONFIRMED THEY ARE FREE! Coaching sessions are nmally one hour. Ensure that either the coach, you, has fixed a room f the session. This applies especially to lessons with non-full time members of staff. You MUST be prepared f the session usually there should be at least two independent rehearsals between sessions and you should have a substantial amount of material f your coach to wk on with you. You MUST always bring a sce f your coach. Ensembles have no strict hours of chamber music coaching, but nmally there should not be me than 4 5 per term. If groups want additional tuition they MUST approach the Head of Department to request this. Coaching at the Academy is provided to develop advanced chamber music skills and understanding of repertoire. It is not meant f the supervision of rehearsals. Ensembles should be able to wk independently. If you are having difficulty establishing a rehearsal strategy, discuss the problem with a chamber music coach, the Head of your department. Chamber Fellows and the Meaker Fellow in Strings have a duty to suppt chamber music activity and can also be invited to observe your rehearsals to see if they can advise you. (See p.? f contact details) Repertoire choices should be discussed with a chamber music coach particularly in the first two years of the Undergraduate course. It is recommended that you generally have no me than two different coaches on one wk extending this number can lead to confusion. (E.g. piano trios should have one piano coach and one strings coach) Do not leave arranging coaching to just befe a perfmance/assessment etc. Your chamber music profile fm should demonstrate a careful spread of input in the fm of tuition, rehearsal and perfmance over two terms. Last minute bulges of activity are not advisable. Any applications f a Tuesday Thursday concert should have associated coaching facted in, with time allowed f this in the preparation period. Coaches must sign ALL members of the ensemble s chamber music profile fm at each session. 15

Frequently Asked Questions Which departments does this apply to? All Strings, woodwind, brass and keyboard undergraduate students are assessed f chamber music in the last week of the spring term. Undergraduate students from the guitar, harp, accdion, gan and histical perfmance are marked in chamber music concerts throughout the year. BMus 4 singers also need to take part in a concert. The chamber music requirement does not apply to double bass, percussion, jazz conducting students. Is it true that I can be assessed f chamber music in an Academy concert instead? Yes - if you have been selected to play in one of the Academy s main diary events which happens to be chamber music (i.e. not conducted). Please remember that you will not be automatically assessed so you must infm the Concerts Administrat well in advance and they will arrange f a member of staff to go along. I am playing in an ensemble f a postgraduate Concert Wkshop. Can I use this perfmance towards my chamber music requirements? Yes, but if you choose to do this, you must infm the String Administrat by the January deadline. Where and when is the timetable f the chamber music assessments published? It will be published by Friday 12th February The schedule will be put into ASIMUT and it will also go up on the Strings Chamber Music Noticeboard outside room 216. I am not able to do the date/time I have been given f my assessment. What should I do? Firstly, go and see the Strings Administrat in room 513 ASAP. If it is easy to swap your time with someone else on the same day, then this may be possible. If you are not able to perfm at all in the week, then you must fill out an SCC application fm. If your application is successful, your assessment will be deferred to a later date. Should I apply to SCC, even if I am not the one being assessed in the ensemble? Yes, it is still your responsibility to apply to SCC on behalf of the group. I have to defer my chamber music assessment and this will affect the rest of my group too. Do they also need to fill out an SCC application? No. You are encouraged to fill out one SCC application fm on behalf of the whole group, but please make sure that you give the names of everybody in your ensemble and get them to sign the fm. Do we need to notify somebody of our repertoire in advance? No. You just need to let the assesss know on the day. Do we need to play whole wks? BMus 1 ensembles should prepare minutes of music and it does not have to be whole wks. Ensembles of students from all other years need to prepare an entire wk ( wks) that are at least 15 minutes long. If the piece is much longer than the allotted time, the assesss will pick selected movements to hear. Do we need to provide sces f the assesss? Yes, it is recommended. Can our chamber music group include postgraduate students external musicians? 19

Yes, but your ensemble must be 50% minimum Academy students. Remember, if your ensemble does include postgraduate students external musicians, it is your responsibility to make sure that they are available in the chamber music assessment week. Do not leave it to the last minute to double check their availability, as you might find yourself stuck! I am playing in me than one group. Does that mean I get me than one mark? No. You should only be marked on the group whose details you gave to the Strings Administrat by the January deadline. Will there be a warm up room? Yes, details of which will be included on the timetable f the week. 20

Chamber Music Profile What is it f? The Chamber Music Profile is a recd of your chamber music activity throughout the year. It is also marked and fms 25% of your overall chamber music mark. A copy will be put in your student pigeonhole at the start of the Academic Year. I have lost my chamber music profile fm. Where can I get another one? You will need to print one off from the Chamber Music page on AIR. What do we do with them? You must hand in your completed chamber music profile to the assesss at your chamber music assessment in the last week of the spring term. Everyone needs to have done their own fm, it is not one per group. What happens if I fget it? You must make sure you get it to the Strings Administrat by Friday 18 th March at the latest. If it is handed in after this date, the mark you receive f your profile may be capped. My chamber music assessment has been deferred to the summer term. Do I wait until then to hand in my chamber music profile? Yes. I have used an Academy concert as my chamber music requirement. When should I hand in my chamber music profile? By the end of the Spring Term Friday 18 th March. You will need to hand it in to the Strings Administrat. Is the chamber music profile that imptant? Yes. If you do not hand in your profile at all, you are in danger of failing the chamber music component of your degree. If you are in your final year, this may result in you not being able to graduate. 21
